Favourite Phantom?
-Mods, feel free to move this as you please. It fits into atleast 3 of the subforums, so I decided to just post it here.
In the past week, Ive seen 3 different versions of Phantom of the Opera. The very recent Andrew Lloyd Webber musical version, the late 80's horror version with Robert Englund, and the silent classic with Lon Cheney. I was just wondering what everyone's favoutie version of this classic story is.
These 3 being the only versions Ive seen, Id have a hard time deciding which is my favourite. They are all so incredibly different and incredible in their own way.
- Webber's had great music for the most part [IMO], and Buttler was a very cool Phantom most of the time [Masquarade scene, once he showed up, was amazing].
- Englund, though drawing heavily from Freddy, was also a great Phantom. Not sympathertic in the least however, which I found to be a good thing to some extent. The kills were cool, and the Leatherface style idea of the mask was very cool and unique. Plus, it has, IMO, the best ending of the three.
- Of course, that leaves the 1925 silent version, with Lon Cheney at his absolute best. The demasking in this version has got to be one of the all-time greatest shock moments. The Phantom's shadow looked great aswell. The sets were phenominal (sp?). The only things I didnt like about this version were the mask itself, which just looked stupid, and the music crappy DVD version I had.
Id really like to see the Claude Rains version, aswell as Argento's.
