The whole Tsunami deal...

The UN is calling it the "biggest disaster EVER"
Last I heard, the bodycount was at 26,000 and climbing, throughout India, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Families torn from eachother by the raging water, tens of thousands killed (and I don't think they've even found half the bodies yet), and literally millions left homeless, in countries that are already poor, and heavily relied upon tourism to make a living.
This is very bad for these countries, and could be the beggining of a downward spiral if they do not receive the help they are in need of.

I actually have a friend in Sri Lanka, and it's so messed up over there that I haven't been able to find out much, at this point, I can only hope that they're ok.

Anyway, just thought I'd do my bit...there's a few charity organisations over HERE working to send what releif they can.
I'm sure there's some operating everywhere...
So, folks...whether or not you have friends or family from any of the effected areas, or hey, even if you've at some point just enjoyed a thai or indian curry, or enjoyed a holiday under the excellent hospitality they offer in these countries....if you can throw a few bucks over their way, I'm sure that even though you'll never get the personal thanks you deserve - you'd be helping someone who's just lived through worse than most of us will (hopefully) ever have to.

I'M POSTING THIS HERE AND IN "EVENTS & HAPPENINGS", as I want everyone to see it.
Apologies if you've read it twice because of this.

ChEEbA 12-28-2004 04:33 AM

Yeah, oxfam is good here too...
So, how did they come up with the "worst disaster ever" bit? Is that determined solely on bodycount, or?

Very descent of you to post this Cheeba.

I work for a large company that looks after IT systems and applications for the business in these countries, and therefore we are contacted pretty much by every country that was affected by the Tsunami on a daily basis.

They have been pretty quiet the last few days as I am sure that they have bigger more important things to worry about.

Me and a few workmates donated some money this evening. Hope it will help.

Anyway, I am off to bed. It's been a long day.

i guess i'd better turn on the TV.

I only get my news on the radio when i'm going to work .. otherwise i have no exposure .. and since I havent been at work since xmas eve, i have no idea what happened.

ChEEbA 12-28-2004 05:25 AM

Well...yeah, big disaster type thing...

I find it incomprehensible that so many [ over 40,000 so far ] could die at one time like that. And about half of them are children.

I shall be donating what ever I can.
