November 18: Now it’s THE EVIL DEAD being remade—by Raimi

Variety reports that, after years of rumors and speculation about an EVIL DEAD 4, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will instead oversee a remake of their gruesome classic via their Ghost House Pictures banner, producing the new film with series star Bruce Campbell. Raimi won’t direct, and a script won’t be written until a new filmmaker is chosen to helm the project; it’s not likely Campbell will star either. "THE EVIL DEAD is such a special film to Sam, Rob, Bruce and horror fans that we are going to take great care in renewing this franchise," Joe Drake, president of Ghost House parent company Senator International, tells the trade. "By keeping its original formula intact and given audiences’ appetite for horror, we expect that we’ll have a real hit on our hands." —Michael Gingold

I can say that I was very disappoinbted when I saw that they were remaking this one, but then I read this article at horror channel and I actualy feel a little relieved....

Wow. Though some may argue that the pure amount of love and worship surrounding Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy is a tad overblown, no one can say that his films weren’t influential. Legions of fans have been begging for a new Evil Dead film since the final moments of Army of Darkness, and if Raimi were ever in a position to make one, now would be the time.

Instead, he’s remaking it.

Variety announced today that Raimi, partner Rob Tapert, and star of all three films Bruce Campbell are both financially and creatively putting their efforts into remaking the Evil Dead franchise from the ground up under Raimi and Tapert’s production arm, Ghost House Pictures. Raimi has said he will not direct, but instead wants to find some new blood to get behind the camera and get the franchise started all over again.

Franchise? That’s what the article says, which shows that Raimi finally understands just how much fans love his Evil Dead series, and how much coin can be made by creating new films. By re-inventing the franchise, all the original partners are free to just help produce (there is no word if Campbell will play Ash or not), and let the young kids churn out sequel after sequel with Raimi’s blessing.

Personally, sounds like a great plan to me. Raimi gets to make sure his mythos continues on without having to actually make the films himself, allowing him to focus on the bigger fish he’s frying directorial-wise, and the fans get what they’ve always wanted: more Evil Dead.
I think that this might be a good thing, to me it sounds like raimi is going to be involved, so it won't get to fucked up, and it also sounds like they plan on remaking them all... That way sequeles can be made to those Evil Dead films with out Raimi involvement, and when Raimi is ready to continue he wont have to pick up where someone else left off, he can go back to his original trilogy... Like it or not, we get more evil dead finnaly...

not sure of my reactions to this.... Sam says EvilDead is such a special film to him...... if it's so special already why does he need to remake it. I can see it now, more and more stuff getting churned out, detracting from the original intentions of Evil Dead.

That is exactly why he is remaking it, there is such an outcry by fans for him to quit with the mega budget movies and go back to the evil dead films. So he will produce the remake and allow there to be new evil dead films based off of the remake (leaving the original trilogy on the side) then when HE is ready to make the actual 4th film he doesn't have to pick up where someone left off. I see it as a win win situation. We will get noe evil dead films, and the trilogy will not be ruined by other film makers!

but how much 'spinoff' stuff do we need, thats was what I was sort of saying in my last post. I think film after film spewed out based on his original idea will not be good....how much further can the Original film ideas be taken, there are limits to ideas, before they get stupidly out of control.. and in the end I can see Rami ending up producing a 4th installment that has been ruined simply because ideas have already been seen in the afore mentioned spewed out 'spinoffs' and done badly...

Rami would be better left alone to do things himself and continue the series with a 4th film that didnt have to 'better' any spinoffs, because even if hardcore fans know that the 'spinoffs' have nothing to do with his new 4th film, judgements will still be made and passed and it will inevitably mean that for Rami to catch a 'fresh audience' and obviously bring in the $$$,the 4th one will end up being crap, simply because he knows that new fans of the films will now want to see a 4th film that is the same style as the 'spinoffs' which I guarantee will be shit. They will no way be anygood as the Original EvilDead films.

So thats why all this new crap and a remake should not go ahead....he should just concentrate on making a 4th film for the hardcore fans like us and Fuck the fans who will be created from a remake and spinoffs.

Sounds like a shit idea to me; he already re-made Evil Dead as Evil Dead 2 … At the end of the day Ash is Campbell hence the title of the third film!

What people wanted was a 4th movie directed by Rami and starring Campbell! No one else has the same kinetic direction style as Rami so what’s the point!

Yeah everyone will watch it and it will make lots of money … Blah Blah … but I would rather see Evil Dead 4 not some lame MTV style remake!

At the end of the day the $ talks and so they will do it and even if its the worst movie ever the title guarentee's a good box office return!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! DAAAAAAMN YOOOOOOOU!

I'm already picturing a Cabin Fever style movie with a cast of hip, young twentysomethings.

God help us.

Well then I have the solution for you all, don't go and see it. Just don't, easy as that.

I think Urge has the best oopinion on these things. This isnt a direct quote, but dont give me credit for this.

Itz great to see new horror movies being made. If you dont like them, tough bananas. Nobody's forcing you to watch 'em.

Yes, I made up the tough bananas thing. lol
