Why no new slashers?
I can't help but wonder why there haven't been any new slashers lately. Sure you've got Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Pinhead, etc. but there are really no newer ones at least none that have any substance. Sure you've got a few cheap movies with half ass slashers but there really hasn't been any good ones in a long time. The last good one that comes to mind is the killers in scream. I can only hope the upcoming movie Saw is good enough to galvanize the slasher genre but judging from the previews it looks lacking.

because hollywoods to busy remaking everything to create something new duh:rolleyes:

well i hate it when they come out with the remake and the directors like im such a huge fan of the original. Wel guess what if you really were you should know remaking it is like killing it and its disrespectful

Easy, they pay some hack to "Rework" the original script. they pay him shit, and get a nobody director to film it, and pad the old proactical effects with cheaper cgi, then toss it out in theaters. Hardcore fans go hoping for something decent. people who have HEARD of the classics go because now they want to be "hardcore" fans.... The movie company makes a bunch of money off of shit that they didnt put any work into, so they continue. It's like pavlov's dogs. if you give a dog a cookie every time he shits on the rug, why would he stop? |
that 2nd paragraph is so damn true
|
i agree fully on the conversation if they make a remake of friday the 13th im just going to watch the original again when it comes out instead. and what do you guys meen no new slashers? there's plenty of good ones out there you missed like chucky's son
|
In hollywood I believe the day of slashers are gone... but not forgotten, hopefully some director will come along and make some killer slashers....

i agree with puppetmaster about other slashers out there, Ben Willis from i know what you did last summer, Jeremy Melton from valentine, and Brenda from urban legad, o the list goes on,
i think that the writers and producers cant think of anything cause they r stupid in a way |
Any machete wielding bad guy is going to be compared to Jason/F13, chainsaws with Leatherface/TCM, butcher knives with Michael/Halloween, hooks with candyman, etc...Almost every popular movie begets sequels, re-makes and prequels. Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy, Godzilla, and so on. It's nothing new.
Blair Witch Project came up with a rather original concept, (which was successful) it has recently been copied by M. Night Shyamalan on the Sci-Fi channel. Movies tend to follow trends, Indies and Asian films are very popular right now. B-movies were very popular in the 50's and 60's, and now their making a strong comeback. Slashers have never left us, they are in lesser known, less popular, lower budget/campy films Their mainstream appeal has died off, but with all trends they will have a resurgence. |

Slashers
They Have Enough Slashers 2 Suit Them. So They Don't Wanna Get Off They're Big Fat Asses & Make More. With Them It's Like Hooray For Me & Screw U.;)
|
i think slashers were an 80s kind of thing. they made hundreds and hundreds in that decade and each one had at least some merit. but when you pull a genre out of the time frame it worked in it doesn't work as well.
|
there are new slasher movies out there. there just either
A: Teenage Slashers B: The straight to video stuff that you see located in the ''new release section'' in stores like Hollywood video and Blockbuster |
the slashers all died after the 80's
now its all about zombie movies |
I'm writing my dissertation about why certain types of horror are popular at certain times... it's kinda interesting to think about the 70s-80s slasher flicks, opposed to the stuff that's coming out now- it's all zombies and big disaster type of stuff coming out at the mo. (Sept 11th, terrorist attacks, genetic science, etc... being veeeery important issues in the media at the mo) The media affects the types of horrors coming out, because overall an element of realism helps a film to be scary, as people can identify with it and make the fear their own.
Oddness... it's starnge, I managed to watch 'Threads' (old BBC thing from late 70s) the other day, it's still scary because it's incredibly relevant now... just a few rambling thoughts... |

the thing is... how in the world could you possibly create a slasher that would ever be as special as michael, freddy, jason, leatherface, pinhead, etc. ... we'll never have anymore slashers
i do think we'll have a bunch of shitty CG characters..... |
the last thing we need is another SLASHER from HOLLYWOOD.
there all the same type of movies, Horny 20somethings run around naked getting killed. I mean i know what you did last summer, valintine, urban legend, there all the same. the killers are not memerable there just stupid. in a way each of the killers are the same as the other. It all started with that god forsaken scream movie. Scream was really the last memerable killer to date(even tho we really dont want to remember him). Its sad really. Myself, I am personally sick of seeing all these preps and jocks saying there hardcore horror fans cuz they own all three scream movies on DVD. And there actually getting scared from this poor excuse of movie making. I say we bring back the old styles of film making, were somewat there with the help of TCM (remake) lets countinue this, just not with remakes but with new fresh ideas. Let hollywood give there money to the real tallent, the indie/independent film makers out there who make movies for people like us. This way everyone will be getting great movies from slashers to zombie movies. |

believe it or not.. agree or not.. i actually thought house of 1,000 corpses was a good attempt to bring back the old style... it didn't include one single bit of CG... wrong turn wasn't that bad actually... even though it had some small CG in it... also... 28 days later was a bit on the older style side...
|
oats... it was not based on events in texas... it wasn't even about a deranged family ... it was inspired by ed gein from Wisconsin... the house in tcm was similar to his house in that he made furniture from humans ... he didn't murder people with chainsaws.. he even shot a few of his victims then gutted them and dismembered their bodies... :)
Click to read all about it! cheers |

I love Slashers! and everyone here is right, it's horrible that Hollywood has gotten to the point, where they have run out of original ideas and just started making remake after remake, and butchering the originals.
I would have to say, that SAW is probably one of the more original looking films, I've been looking forward to seeing. It's not your typical 'slasher' film (teens having sex and then getting hacked up). I mean, name another slasher, where the killer uses other people as his means of dispatching his/her victims. |
