Which Sequel to the big 4 did you hate the most?
As far as the "Big 4" goes (Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th) which one has the worst sequels as well as the single worst individual sequel, and what are they? I picked Halloween for the worst sequels all because H20 and H8 screwed up the series and you can't forget Halloween III being thrown in there to fuck it all up. I picked Halloween 8 as the worst overall sequel. Yep. I dislike it even over Halloween III. Had Halloween III not been carrying the Halloween title it may not have been that bad. . Yes. I hate Halloween 8..even over TCM The next Gen which I happen to like!! Yes it's true. I like TCM: The Next Generation.

I have to agree, Halloween: Resurrection is the worst individual sequel. Simply for the fact that they let Busta Rhymes kung-fu fight Michael Myers. They just didn't make Myers scary in that movie. It sucked on a major level.
As far as overall series goes, I hate the Nightmare sequels (especially Part 2). None of those films compare to the original. I'm just not into wisecracking boogeymen. |
I would have to say Nightmare/and Halloween because I like all the other choices.. But the rest all sucked.. :D
|
TCM: The Next Generation for sure. H20 and Ressurection were pretty dismal too.

What- are you trying to get to 10,000 ASAP?

I was just finding interesting threads that could be discussed further, because this place has been dead. I haven't been paying attention to my post count actually... it's not something I really give a shit about. |

I found in recent years than i'm not a big sequel guy. when i was young it seemed cool to see the next installment of whatever - but the older i got they just became pathetic cash grabs. most movies - unless designed from the very onset to be a series that tells a story - are told in completion in the 1st film. that was the idea someone had - there was nothing left to tel at the end of it. which is why the 1st films feel like real films and the rest seem like shit. There are always exceptions - but this is mostly the rule for me. so which is the worst in the 'big 4' ... anything over 'part 3' in any of them. |
I liked H20. The film was pretty dull and I thought they could have worked on the continuity a lot better, but I think it gave a pretty conclusive end to the series. Shame they had to destroy that in Halloween: Ressurection.
But when you think about it, most of them flowed into each other; Halloween 1 to 2 Halloween Return to Revenge to Curse. They may not have been good films sometimes but I'd say some of them were watchable. And Halloween 3 is always good for a laugh! I'd say TCM had the best overall sequel line and Jason X was the worst Friday the 13th film. But at least they tried something different. Shame it was just too different. |

Doesn't Matthew McConaughey slap the shit outta Renee Zellweger in it.... I need to watch it again but i do have fond memories of it.. *gets off Shrinks couch.. |
I like Sequels. I like movies that never die I guess.

Overall, I'd say Nightmare has the worst crop of sequels - everything aside from the original, Dream Warriors and New Nightmare range from mediocre to god-awful.
Only seen the 1st two TCM entries - loved 'em both. Halloween has some stinkers for sure...it wasn't even that long ago that I watched them, but I can hardly differentiate at all between 4 through 7. I remember the only one that was flat out terrible was Resurrection, but none of the rest - other than the first 3 - left much impression either way. I'd say Friday the 13th holds up best overall. It doesn't peak as high as the others, but barring Jason Lives + New Blood they're all watchable and entertaining. Nothing groundbreaking, but I enjoyed the series as a whole far more than the others. Part III is still one of my all-time favourite slashers. |
I thought the Elm St and F13 sequels were pretty solid. I enjoy F13 Part 2 over the original these days.
I think the sequels of both those franchises have grown on me over the years. I thought they were terrible when I watched them as a kid now I appreciate them as mindless fun. There's probably a nostelgia thing going on too. Quote:

Sequels work better if there is some sort of story arc, an overall endpoint which they try to reach. Given most horror sequels are given the go ahead based solely on the success of the first this is a rare occurrence.
|
I dig how the Phantasm sequels progressed the story.

I cant pick an absoulte worst overall. But I hated Halloween:Ressurection with a passion. Feel the same about Jason Takes Manhattan and the 3rd TCM.
Jason X and Nightmare 5 and 6 didnt hit on much but I can stand them. All the rest I liked for one reason or another. |
TCM: The Next Generation was shit. So was Halloween: Resurrection. Far and away the 2 worst sequels of all the ones under consideration.
|
The big four in your eyes maybe. I don't think TCM is one of the 'big four'. I don't even know where this 'big four' came from.
On that note, i'd rank most of your 4 chosen films' sequels about the same. Average. |
I never understood the hatred for NoES Part 2. It's certainly a far cry better than some of the latter entries in the series. Sure, it doesn't "make sense" with the character that he came to be, but as it's own little movie it's not bad. And the way Yeager did the make-up effects actually made him look nasty as hell as opposed to a puffy, pink, rubber goon like in the later movies.
Freddy's Dead was the worst of the series as far as I am concerned (even though I still watch it for laughs). The worst out of all of them is deservingly Halloween: Resurrection. The combination of the half-assed cinema verite mixed with Busta Ryhmes mixed with a story that felt like they had an existing script and just tacked Myers on there to sell it better make it unwatchable to me. I've never actually seen TCM 3 + 4, though...and I don't really plan to. |
I'd say it's a tie between Freddy's Dead and Halloween 6. Resurrection was shitty, yes, but 6 wasted Donald Pleasence and tried to explain The Shape. Resurrection didn't negate.

All the sequels to these movies are pretty repulsive I think. Every movie should stop after the original.

Haha- I didn't think Bub could get banned....

No he was banned, and by his own request.
Apparently he didnt like some stuff which was happening here in HDC back then. After that I talked to him and persuaded him to return, lifting his ban in the process. |
Why ban yourself? Just don't come here if its not floating your boat.

And if you opt not to come here, don't post a 'goodbye' thread. You'll look like less of an attention craving fool when you return. |
