5 Underrated Horror Films Of The Past 25 Years

Here is a list I have comprised of 5 horror films released over the past 25 years that are more than worthy of getting the recognition that other great films get.

1. Let The Right One In (2008)
Let The Right One In is a Swedish vampire film based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist. The story follows a boy named Oskar who is severely bullied at his school by fellow classmates. Oskar has no friends until a girl named Ely move into the apartment next to his. She motivates him to stand up for himself and along the way the two develop a bond that is so dark yet innocent.

2. Ravenous (1999)
Ravenous is a western horror film set during the Mexican American War. It stars Guy Pearce as a war hero who is very squimish and yet goes through extreme sickening measures to survive, including cannibalism.

3. May (2002)
May tells the story of the title character (Angela Bettis) who has been an outcast her entire life and just wants a friend. Any attempt she makes at opening herself up she gets crushed. She finally finds a way to "make" her friend and taps into her inner Frankenstein.

4. Event Horizon (1997)
Event Horizon stars Lawrence Fishburne in a horror/sci-fi crossover about a space crew sent on an expedition to recover a ship that vanished years before and has suddenly resurfaced on radar. The crew must recover the ship and doing so they will unlock it's darkest secrets and find out just where the ship was all those years.

5. 30 Days Of Night (2007)
30 Days Of Night is a vampire film that takes place in a remote area of Alaska during one of the harshest acts of nature on Earth, 30 days of complete darkness during a rough snow storm. The citizens of the town must survive the dark whil a group of animal-like vampires feed on anyone in sight. The sheriff (Josh Hartnett) must find a way to keep his town safe until the sun comes up.

I agree, I liked all the movies that you have mentioned. Sadly, most movies I truly enjoy get very little recognition.

hammerfan 10-22-2015 06:03 AM

Haven't seen Ravenous or May.

TheBossInTheWall 10-22-2015 06:27 AM

I believe Let the Right One In got a huge amount of praise and recognition.

I did not like May. Couldn't get past 30 minutes.

Event Horizon and 30 Days of Night are fantastic.

Added Ravenous to the Netflix queue. Haven't been able to find May streaming anywhere....legal, that is.

Yea, I don't get that one either.

To me it was the best movie coming out that year.

Morningriser 10-22-2015 08:45 AM

In the US it is pretty unknown.

Repo'd 10-22-2015 08:52 AM

Nice topic!

I have to agree with Boss, LTROI got plenty of attention when it was released. It's a brilliant film and deserves all the praise. Your opinion that it's underrated is, naturally, subjective so I can't argue one way or the other there.

Where we agree is on May and Ravenous. Those are two very intriguing movies and need to be mentioned more when people talk about modern classics. May in particular just leaves me breathless every time I watch it.

30 Days of Night and Event Horizon get exactly the amount of attention they deserve. Some. ::big grin::

Anthropophagus 10-22-2015 09:26 AM

LTROI is anything but under rated.Lots of well deserved praise and accolades.

Event Horizon is yet another pile of crap from the modern day Ed Wood that is Paul W.S. Anderson.Seriously, that man couldnt direct traffic.

Morningriser 10-22-2015 09:32 AM

Event Horizon creeped me out when I first saw it. I am not very big on sci-fi horror but that one got to me.

horcrux2007 10-22-2015 09:38 AM

I wasn't impressed by Event Horizon at first, but after giving it another chance, I really enjoyed it.

Here's the thing about Event Horizon (1997...

I had already seen every Star Trek Original Series & Next Gen, Twilight Zone, and most all the sci-fis (and I think I had just seen Sphere1998). If you had also seen these, your eyes may also had rolled at the continual parade of "stolen" sci-fi ideas & tropes strewn together in Event Horizon. It seemed very hodge·podge to me.

I thought it was a cool idea, good production value, and mildly entertaining. Had I not seen much sci-fi before seeing EH, I probably would have been more impressed.

I would'nt say all these were great, just some mix of under appreciated, misjudged, missed or forgotten.

Scanners 1981
Dressed to Kill 1980
King Kong 1976
Jacob's Ladder 1990
John Dies at the End

''He was licking me!''

Ravenous is one of the greatest films ever made. Col. Ives one of my favorite characters.

I couldn't agree more. This movie is brilliant. Excellent, odd, soundtrack too.

Martha 10-28-2015 07:02 AM

Have not seen any of them.

But will check out.

Straker 10-28-2015 09:13 AM

I think I am the exception when it comes to Ravenous.... I found it a little bit boring and thought Robert Carlyle overacted the crap out of his part.

Exorcist III might be one of the more underrated horrors of the last 25 years though. It seems to have a bit more of a cult following and respect these days but its a quality film. George C. Scott and Brad Dourif put in great performances.

An excellent example.

Starry Eyes is pretty overlooked. It's not great (the pacing was pretty bad) but as far as recent body horror goes there's not much recently that's like it.

Repo'd 10-28-2015 12:37 PM

Evil pup, you just reminded me of another body horror that should get more attention, called Excision. That one throws some pretty solid punches to the gut and needs to be seen by more genre fans.

MrsRickGrimes 10-28-2015 03:50 PM

Ravenous

Session 9

Splinter

Stake Land

SK's The Night Flier

Thanks for the recommendation I'll have to check it out. This one might be the only one from the lists I haven't seen or at least already planned to see.

Let me know what you think. You would literally be the second person I know who has seen the movie. The first would be me, of course.

Love this movie, one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations.

You are not alone.I didnt like Ravenous at all and i totally hated the music.

Morningriser 11-04-2015 12:24 PM

Brotherhood Of The Wolf belongs on this list too

horcrux2007 11-04-2015 03:04 PM

As Above, So Below is criminally underrated.

Absolute truth.

Morningriser 11-04-2015 03:31 PM

Is that out yet on dvd? I want to see it.

Repo'd 11-04-2015 03:46 PM

Yep, for a while.

Baron Von Marlon 11-04-2015 03:54 PM

These are a few that come to mind. Might edit and add more titles later on.

-The Ruins (2008)
Hard to describe this one without spoiling too much.
It's archeology related horror (which I love). There's a group of young adults, some crazy locals, some blood, cool location, acting's decent, script's alright,...
And some rememorable scenes.

-The Tunnel (2011)
Similar to The Blair Witch Project but better and claustrophobic.

-Feast (2005), Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds (2008), Feast 3: The Happy Finish
Best creature flicks in a long time.
Cool non-CGI monsters, violence, blood, gore, humour, biker chicks, wrestling midgets, a guy named Jean-Claude Segal,...
