Investigation horror films

I've been really into watching films about investigators/researchers/house 'cleaners'/etc. lately. I'm looking for some recommendations. I've seen a lot of them though. Er, not police or reporter investigations.

Here's some I can think of offhand that I've watched or looking through my netflix ratings:

Grave Encounters(blech)
The Haunting of Hill House(good stuff)
Paranormal Activity(disappointing)
Apartment 143
The Apparition
Oculus(only saw it for Karen Gillian, it was dull)
The Entity(so good, sound track too)
The various Amityvilles(number 4 was silly fun good, but not in the requested theme)
The Taking of Deborah Logan(decent)
Prince of Darkness(good stuff)
The Unnameable I and II(kinda loosely 'cleaning' filmes, but regardless great films)
Poltergeist I and II(very good I, can't remember much about II)
The Conuring(meh)
Stigmata(decent)
The Quiet Ones(decent, but leaning towards dull)

Ok so there's a list of ones I'm sure I've seen and can remember. Probably quite a few more I haven't listed I can not think of. OK, so can anyone offer suggestions not in that list? Much appreciated.

One of my all-time favorites:

1408

It counts, I think, because Cusack is a (jaded) ghost hunter.

Ty for suggestion. Already saw it and didn't like it.

seven? Though this might come under police and you have probably already seen it
Exorcist

Angra 02-02-2015 02:55 AM

In the Mouth of Madness, which seems to be my suggestion to everyone these days. ::roll eyes::

I actually haven't seen Seven, i'm not really into slasher/serial killer type flics.

Everyone's seen the Exorcist. : ) Me included. Ty though!

Seen it. So good. That was more police procedural noir/hard boiled investigation though.

edit: I have seen it, was confusing it with Lord of Illusions for some reason. Both great flics.

The legend of Hell House
The Haunting

The Legend of Hell House was already on my list, I just got the title wrong. Had it as The Haunting of Hell House.

Already saw the haunting, both are good films though. And ty.

Dead Silence. But I'm sure you've already seen that one.

Baron Von Marlon 02-03-2015 02:36 PM

Give it a chance. It's brilliant.
And it's definitely no slasher or typical serial killer movie.

Haven't seen it. I sort of avoid 'doll' horror movies besides original Chucky and the Puppetmaster films. This one seems to be more of a police/reporter investigation, but looks very good. I'll add it to my list. Tyvm. : )

Seen all of those 'cept The Last Wave. It looks interesting. I guess I should've been more specific that I wanted paranormal investigators or something similar. Anyway, The Last Wave looks like it could be good. Reminding me a teensy bit of God Told Me To. I suppose I could watch Seven, dunno. I'll keep it in mind. : )

The Changeling (1980)

Not so much paranormal investigators but a man finds his new home to be haunted and tries to find out why. I found this movie genuinely scary and intelligent. Not a cheesy 80's film by any means (though I love those, too)

Yum! I just re-saw this recently, it's aged very well. :-)

I agree. Quite atmospheric, almost claustrophobic . DeadbeatatDawn turned me on to "Last Wave" after I read his review of it.

neilold 02-05-2015 01:21 AM

you want to try 7, it's not a slasher in the standard sense of the word, though teir are elements of it, it is more a horror/investigation/serial killer thing, it also has a good ending, though its donkeys years since i've seen it. I can recommend it anyway, just as a good film to watch regardless of anything.

Man I wish London After Midnight wasn't destroyed. When I first saw a picture from the film I said I have got to see that but then learned that it doesn't exist anymore due to a fire in the studio where they making it.

Good one. I have it on vhs that is a hard one to find on vhs.

neilold 02-19-2015 12:57 AM

not seen all of them, but i believe some of the saw movies have an investigation type thing to them. Course, i only watched them for the traps, remeber the needle one, owwweee, it gave you boo-boos.

Anchen 03-01-2015 01:58 PM

You've probably already seen El Orfanato, which has both the investigation of a disappearance of a person and of paranormal activity.

I found it excellently written and produced with a budget worthy of the script.

Along with the 1980 Changeling that was also mentioned, this is my favorite in this investigation genre, mainly because they actually managed to scare me.

I'm a bit over my investigator kick, but El Orfanato looks good. I'll add it to my list. Ty. : )
