Newbie with a Horror Contest

Hey guys! I'm new to the forum so bear with me. I just started a blog reviewing horror movies and am on a mission for some help. I, for the life of me, cannot find a current horror movie that my husband says he likes. He's super picky. He loves all the classics, but basically anything beyond 1990 is garbage to him. I've tried a ton too. Please read my blog (following would be amazing too as I'm new to the blog world):

https://horrorpsycho.wordpress.com/

and help me find this movie!!! I'm serious. First person to find a movie my husband will actually like wins a prize!

Angra 01-14-2015 04:57 AM

What movie??

What does this movie you're looking for have to do with your blog??

If you want our help make an effort, please. ::roll eyes::

horrorpsycho 01-14-2015 05:14 AM

Again, I apologize. I'm new to the whole forum and blog thing.

It's not a specific movie. Just a really good horror movie. My blog is just reviewing horror movies. I'm seriously just looking for any horror movie that's good enough for my husband to actually say he likes it. Every single horror movie I've seen recently, regardless of how much I love it, never gets my husband's approval. He loves the classics but hates any modern horror.

While writing my blog, I'm searching for different horror movies to watch so I figured I'd also have a mission to find one that not only I will love, but he will to.

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Angra 01-14-2015 05:35 AM

What "classics" does your husband like?

Can you remember any of the titles?

horrorpsycho 01-14-2015 06:00 AM

Sure! I guess by classic I mean like 80's stuff. He loves the original Halloween 1 and 2, original Nightmare on Elm Street, Christine, Exorcist, Salem's Lot, American Werewolf in London, The Thing......

Those are his favorites probably.

Have him try Take Shelter:

Thank you so much! I'll give it a shot!

horcrux2007 01-14-2015 06:09 AM

Has he tried The Conjuring? That has a sort of classic haunted house movie vibe, and it doesn't have any of the jump scares, gratuitous gore, and horrible special effects that many modern horror movies have. I thought it was rather scary.

I've actually seen it, but I don't believe he has yet. I will give that one a shot too. Thanks!!

I also recommend The Ring if he hasn't seen it. It's really atmospheric, and it's one of my favorite horror movies.

I hope so! Thank you!! He is so freaking particular so I'm hoping to prove him wrong!

I actually loved The Ring...but believe it or not, he didn't care for it. He's so picky about horror movies.

What about the "Woman in Black", "The Grudge" and "The Thing" remakes?

And The Others?

We haven't seen the Woman in Black so I'll add that to the list. He didn't care for The Grudge at all. He didn't care for The Thing remake, but I think he was a little critical since the original is one of his favorites. As for The Others, he didn't hate it, but wasn't really impressed with it.

Angra 01-14-2015 06:32 AM

The Faculty?

I'm not surprised that he didn't like The Grudge, nor The Others... I thought The Others was painfully boring.

horrorpsycho 01-14-2015 06:35 AM

Also....thank you all so much for the suggestions so far!!! I haven't seen some of these, so I plan on reviewing them in my blog too!

Yeah, I knew he wouldn't like The Grudge. I didn't mind it, but I like movies that make me jump. And I agree on The Others. It wasn't bad...but definitely a really slow movie.

Okay...I saw this. It wasn't the best I've seen, but wasn't terrible. However, I didn't have him watch it because I know it's something he wouldn't like. Thank you though! Keep em coming!

LOL! Noted. Bonus!

Giganticface 01-14-2015 07:16 AM

horrorpsycho, can you give us some insight as to what he doesn't like about modern horror movies?

Is it a production value thing, kinda like folks who legitimately really prefer music that has pre-mid-nineties production value, before digital recording? If so, that might be hard to find. There's no such thing as celluloid anymore.

Is it a stylistic thing? A lot of modern films try to be more "real," either by showing more than they used to (for instance, with more graphic kills), or with more advanced special effects, or just with a more reality-driven style, like all found footage films are, and many standard films try to be.

It's it a nostalgia thing? If so, that's going to be hard to overcome. Even a film like Zombeavers that tries to replicate the 80s slasher plot, production, etc., with cheesy moster puppets, is going to be considered satire. And throwback movies like Hatchet are similar, but also take advantage of modern trends like realistic effects and over-the-top violence.

Some extra insight would be helpful, but also there's a chance that it's an impossible task. You can't convert a weathered, die-hard, exclusive Rolling Stones fan to love One Republic.

Great question! Hmmm.....I'm not really sure if it's one specific thing. Let me talk to him about this.....thanks

Okay, so I literally copied and pasted your post into an e-mail to him and here's his response:

More of number 2 than the others. It's just old and tired with no new ideas. It's all mindless rehash and boring and uninspired. Just bland with no soul.

Great, that's helpful! So maybe it's not a futile effort.

Here are few of my suggestions that I think are different and inspired, bringing some new ideas:

Let the Right One In (must see modern vampire drama)

May (unique & personal awkward psycho)

Ravenous (period cannibal black comedy with interesting musical score)

The Babadook (for the awesome children's book)

Ex Drummer (not truly horror, more of a twisted drama/thriller/black comedy)

Inside (unique take on slasher & home invasion)

Ichi the Killer (gonzo and violent!)

Under the Skin (very slow burn though, but one of a kind)

horcrux2007 01-14-2015 08:32 AM

I forgot about The Babadook... that one is really really good.

Nice!!! Thanks so much for all those suggestions! I actually just saw The Babadook a few weeks ago and I really liked it. He hasn't seen it yet though.

Also....is that the original Let the Right One In, or the US remake?

He should probably watch both... I haven't watched either (I have no clue why not), but I've heard that they're really good.

Me too!! I've had the original in my Netflix queue for so long and have no idea why I've never watched it! Hopefully it's still there. haha
