You're Invited to Chrono's Seven-Week Horror Marathon!

Hello Friends and horror junkies!

It's but the beginning of September but I am starting to think and get excited about Halloween!

This year I'd like to celebrate All Hallow's Eve by hosting a six-week horror movie marathon to revisit some horror favorites and FINALLY check out a few that I've had on my "MUST SEE" list for a while.

WHAT'S THE PLAN?

The idea is to watch three movies a week - A Sunday matinee/early evening, a Tuesday evening showing and Thursday evening showing (I don't want to steal Fridays and Saturdays!).

The overall THEME of the Marathon is:

The Old and The New - Genres through the Decades - A look at what some consider "classics" juxtaposed with modern re-imaginings.

SO HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

Simple. I'll post the schedule here and we can Post Live on a Horror.Com Thread. I'll also set up a Skype session for Live and Video Chatting. I'll let you know where you can stream the movie (Netflix, Amazon, etc.) and you can join either through streaming, renting a DVD, or diving into your own collection.

Not able to make a specific time? No worries! We'll keep the thread open throughout the week to discuss each week's theme.

WHAT'S THE LINEUP?

Still in progress (definitely subject to change!), but here are my thoughts so far:

Week 1: Frankenstein's Monster
Dates: September 14th, 16th, and 18th
  • Frankenstein (1931)
  • Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
  • Young Frankenstein (1974)
  • Also in consideration: Frankenstein's Army (2013) & Frankenweenie (2012)

Week 2: Werewolves (There Wolves!)
Dates: September 21st, 23rd, and 25th
  • The Wolf Man (1941)
  • American Werewolf in London (1981)
  • Ginger Snaps (2000)

Week 3: Vampires
Dates: September 28th, 30th, and October 1st
  • Vampyr (1932)
  • Interview with a Vampire (1994)
  • Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

Week 4: Zombies
Dates: October 5th, 7th, and 9th
  • Night of the Living Dead (1968)
  • Return of the Living Dead (1985)
  • Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Week 5: Slashers/Serial Killers
Dates: October 12th, 14th, and 16th
  • M (1931)
  • Psycho (1960)
  • Halloween (1978)

Week 6: The Supernatural
Dates: October 19th, 21st, and 23rd
  • The Haunting (1963)
  • Legend of Hell House (1973)
  • The Changeling (1980)
  • Also in Consideration: House on Haunted Hill (either version)

Week 7: Let's get Meta
Dates: October 26th, 28th, and 30th
  • Evil Dead II (1987)
  • Trick 'r Treat (2007)
  • Cabin in the Woods (2012)
  • Also in Consideration: You're Next (2011)

This was really tough to put together because I KNOW there's a lot missing here - Ghosts/Supernatural, J-horror, just to list two...

But there are just so many moves and such little time before Halloween. :danger:

Plus, this may or may not spill into November - And I might just spice up my Friday and Saturday nights with a few supplementary classics here or there.

SO

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

I'd love to make this a social event - Think about movies you would swap in/swap out and think about different ways we could chat/connect during the viewings. I know that timing will be tough for international folks but I'm also trying to coordinate friends coming over for viewings, so I'll need to pick something doable in EST - Probably:

Sundays - Sometime between 1 and 6 EST (or who knows? I might move these to evenings as well)...
Tuesdays & Thursdays: 8:00 EST

The idea here is join in when you can. ::cool::

I'll continue to post we get closer to next week - Please feel free to post any thoughts/feedback! I'm really psyched about this!

Damn Heathen 09-07-2014 07:18 AM

Thursday is football night! Dammit!

horcrux2007 09-07-2014 07:26 AM

How do you get in the skype session?

hammerfan 09-07-2014 09:30 AM

1. I don't have a membership to Amazon (can't afford it)
2. Tuesday night is NCIS
3. Sunday is football
4. Can't Skype, don't have a webcam

What if I've recently seen one of the movies? I'm thinking of Only Lovers Left Alive, just saw it last week.

The Villain 09-07-2014 10:14 AM

Totally stealing your idea. My plan was to watch a movie every day but last year that got exhausting. I like your plan but I think I'll have to do my own

Ferox13 09-07-2014 10:26 AM

I like this - need to work out the time differences.

The Bloofer Lady 09-07-2014 10:28 AM

I mostly (only) have access to movies off YouTube and no Skype or webcam but if the movie is on YouTube, i could watch it at the same time and comment on the thread. You'd be surprised how many movies are on youtube.

Straker 09-07-2014 01:41 PM

OK, I'm in, sounds like a blast.

Yeah, I figured there'd be a conflict with football, especially doing it on Sunday. I originally was going to do 1 night a week but couldn't decide on such a small list! Hopefully you can make a few or at least join in some of the posts afterwards. :)

That's a good question - I actually need to figure that piece out. The conversation I had with myself:

--- You should figure out a Live Video Chat!

--- Great!! I think I've done it with Google + Hangouts before.

--- But not everyone may know how to use Google Hangouts!

--- Well, let's do Skype, then!

--- Can Skype even DO that??

--- Dunno; it MUST, right?

...

So I'm not sold on the Chat function yet -I need to look at options - Maybe Google Hangout would be a better thing to do - You're young and Internet-savvy; any recommendations? ::wink::

1. Hopefully a few of them will be streaming on Netflix. If not, I know that YouTube typically has quite a few if you look. I'll try to do research before each session. :) Personally, I think what I'm going to do is "Up" my Netflix subscription to three DVD's for this month and next; I think that'll be cheapest for me.

2. DVR it! ;)

3. Yeah, I know. I didn't want to steal Fridays or Saturdays though

4. Whether it's Skype or another Messanger tool, I want to find something with chat functionality so it's OK if you don't have a webcam.

And of COURSE come and comment if you've seen the movies - At any time! I'm still trying to suss out how the "Live Viewing" will work - Whether or not video chat is truly a good idea (or if folks will get annoyed if other folks are talking). At a minimum, I want to settle on a Messanger App or site, and bring the discussion on here too. ::cool::

Well, I REALLY hope that you can join in a bunch of these - I love talking Dr. Who with you and think it would be a blast to talk horror during and after we've just watched something. :danger:

Awesome! I might be able to move the weekday showings to 7:00 EST if that helps; I just need enough time to get home from work, set up, and etc...

Good news is that if we choose to use Skype as a live chat, it's totally free and you can use it even if you don't have a Webcam. ::cool::

So if you guys have a better recommendation for a Live Chat (potential Video Chat but not required) during the movie, let me know - I only have experience with Skype and Google+ but I'm sure there are other options out there.

The Villain 09-07-2014 07:52 PM

It just might be hard for me to make sure i watch them at an exact time and date. Ive seen most of those though so I can still join in the conversations later.

neverending 09-07-2014 08:02 PM

A worthy project. Good luck one and all who participate.

I'm currently spending every spare minute updating and rebranding Welcome to Weirdsville Radio into a 24/7 365 Halloween station.

roshiq 09-07-2014 08:47 PM

Really great idea & I'm really looking forward to see it works out well. This sort of activity is needed for HDC once or twice a year, IMO.

But sadly, I can't join this time not only for the time difference issue but actually it's getting kinda hard (though I'm trying good lately ;D) for me to spend some time in watching movies...as my little princess is getting more & more demanding and that's just fascinating. For near about more than a month my wife & the daughter was in my In-law's residence and now they have come back home...at first I thought it'd take time for her to recognize me as I used to go there & saw her only once & twice a week back then and thinking it might take some time for her to remember & recognize me as her father and she is just now 4 & half month old. But the strange part is I guess nature has its own way to develop & maintain the beautiful bonding between a father & daughter. Cause every time I go close to her she gets excited & starts laughing & loves to cuddling with me more than anybody around her! It's just magical!

Oh, sorry for the off topic discussion.

Best of luck, Chrono! ::smile::

hammerfan 09-08-2014 01:18 AM

That's wonderful, roshiq! ::love::

Great to know. Any chance of you conducting live Halloween shows like NEW Radio before?

If you can, we can re-introduce the HDC Horry Awards.

The bond between father & daughter is a very special one. Distance can never put a spanner into that.

Enjoy, for these days won't return again!

I like your idea Chrono, but I guess I would maybe make a suggestion because what you are trying to do will be fairly difficult to pull off.

I belong to a Classical Music group and run what has been a pretty successful event each week which is basically the Weekend Symphony. It's kind of like a book club I guess.

Every Friday I post a Classical Symphony (from a very large list) and each person basically chooses a recording of that particular symphony and listens to it over the weekend (although technically they have till the next Friday's posting) to listen.

So basically everyone posts which recording they will be listening to and once they listen to it, they post their thoughts and comments. I've kept it going for almost a year and a half and each week we have probably 20-40 different people participate.

You might consider a Weekly Monster kind of like what you described. Like Week #1 everyone picks a Frankenstein related movie or as many movies as they can fit into their schedule. Perhaps express watching a favorite, and/or one they've never seen, etc. and over that week people can post which movies they watched and their thoughts and comments on them.

You also might consider something similar to what I do, and post a weekly movie not just leading up to Halloween but each week and as each person watches they can post their thoughts and comments. Maybe go through our big "HDC 1896-2012 100+ Years Of Cinema" list or something.

Anyway, just some suggestions.

I love this, RDB - In fact, when choosing movies, I had a hard time choosing between something that I know I'll love, or something I've never seen vs. say something that I think more people would like.

So maybe a good idea would be -
  • Keep on the weekly topic.
  • Still maintain showtimes (because God knows if I don't schedule it I'll putz around and probably not watch)
  • Ask people to watch either what I'm watching OR something else on topic.

Awesome!!

I'll keep an eye on how this idea develops :) I love it so far, but I'm in a completely different time zone... and if it's not in my collection and not on Netflix, this is not a time where I can afford to buy a lot of movies.

When you get a little money, buy horror; and if any is left, buy food and clothes. Priorities man!

Great idea, Chrono! I'd love to join live chat, but I'm on PST time, and don't think the timing will work out with work and family. I'll try to follow along though -- sounds fun.

Regarding live chat, Skype is good but you'd have to become Contacts with everyone in the chat, which requires getting each username, making the request, then waiting for them to accept. It's also a bit "permanent" for your account, since you'll now be Contacts with everyone.

Google Hangouts is probably a bit easier since I *think* you just need to know each Google account (or I think non-gmail addresses work too) and add them to a Hangout (we use them at work every week, but I've never actually set one up). The downside is that some users may not have Chrome installed, which I think is required (or the Hangouts app on mobile).

The up-and-comer that might take over them both is HipChat, but since it's currently less common, I'm guessing no one has it installed, and it would take some learning to administer a Room since it's different than the other two more common choices.

Yeah, it's tough trying to find a time that works for everyone (happens to me at work every time I try to schedule a "global" conference call! ::wink::) - Maybe with Sunday nights being a little earlier you can join. If not, then definitely the discussion threads. ::cool::

YouTube actually has a lot of movies available, too - Might be worth looking at as well.

And thanks for the rundown on these - Maybe I'll stay away from Skype because not everyone would have it and that way people don't have to download anything. I'll look into Google Hangouts & HipChat a bit more too.

Remember back in AOL days when all you had to do was create a chat room??? ::wink::

Awesome!

What I was actually thinking was encouraging people to watch movies within the same "Theme" even if they're not watching the exact movies that I am - That way for "Frankenstein Week" We could discuss other spinoffs and etc.

FYI, Nosferatu and Cabin in the Woods are streaming on Netflix. A lot of the others are on YouTube

metternich1815 09-18-2014 03:35 PM

This is a really good selection and variety of horror films. The only thing I was surprised about was the lack of a ghost/supernatural week. No Halloween season is complete without some supernatural films. Though I do understand there is only so much time until Halloween. Even better, I own all of these films (including the also considering ones), except Frankenstein's Army (though this one is on Netflix Instant), Frankenweenie, and Only Lover's Left Alive. I know that there are a number of people here who are not big fans of the original Dracula, but I have always loved it. Honestly, my favorite of the classic Universal monster films. I do not consider it slow paced in the least.

Oh, I know - I was originally going to do 4 weeks, but that just wan't enough and of COURSE I had to do it by theme.

I'm missing ghosts/supernatural, found footage, possession, J-horror... There's always next year.

So I'm thinking about swapping out THE ALIEN THREAT week for a Supernatural week - I could watch the original House on Haunted Hill or the original Haunting... And/or Legend of Hell House...

I've seen the Alien movies that I've mentioned and I'm thinking that it can't be Halloween without ghosts, right??

Also I'm thinking of swapping out Psycho from Slasher week for Sleepaway Camp, which I've never seen...

Thoughts/Suggestions?

I like the idea of swapping out aliens for supernatural. No opinion on the slashers. My two votes for supernatural movies are House on Haunted Hill and Legend of Hell House.

I'm doing an alien week as well so you could just weigh in on mine ::big grin::
