The 80s Movies Tournament
 

Ah, the decade of the 80s!

Directors were at their creative best, and studios had a backseat when it came to interference for financial gains at the BO. As a result, similar to the 70s, the 80s was the best period to be a movie fan. Films of the 80s might not have scored highly on the critical front, but they sure became popular as pop culture evolved and invaded our daily lives.

As for horror, it had peaked in the decade before, and the 80s carried forward that wonderful surge and popular horror became mainstream. As a result, we often refer to 80s horror films as the Golden Period. Like them or hate them, there is an inherent fondness when you recall all your favorite 80s films. How do they stack up against each other though, remains to be seen.




We have had several 80s horror film tournaments before. This time, we are pitting 80s horror against 80s non-horror. You can gauge by the popularity charts here by this simple fact - a search on IMDB for all films made between 1980 and 1989 with a minimum of 1000 votes yielded some 2,000+ films!! Filtering through them and finalising 200 non-horror and 119 horror is no mean feat, I tell you. I had to choose those which represented 80s the best, horror or otherwise, so quite a few sequels and repetitive-content films have got the axe. So, if your favorite sequel/remake/cult classic didn't find a place in this, don't shoot me.

First off though, we need to filter out 38 spots from both sections, so that we end up having 162 non-horror and 81 horror, which will then go up against each other until we crown our one true 80s decade winner film, which will tower above all the rest.

Dune was fantastic. (Great music by the way)

Omen3 was a dud, and seriously, how many people knew Project A existed in the 80s?
