The Worst Movie You Saw in 2013

I generally try to be positive about anything shell out $$$ for .. but one movie stood out as the biggest pieces of fecal-cake I've seen in 2013 let alone since 2000 - and that was : The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones.

Pains me to say this, it shot in Toronto and i know the FX guy and another friend had a roll in it - but great googly-moogly it was a flaming turd.

most of the fault lay in the source material ... it was nothing more than a cheap rip off of Harry Potter + Twilight + Star Wars.

awful.

Ferox13 12-17-2013 04:48 AM

HATE CRIME - awful, found footage Home Invasion film. It managed to be offense and tame at the same time.

The Villain 12-17-2013 07:19 AM

I'm sure there's more I can think of but right now what comes to mind is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

I had all kinds of fun with this one - enjoyed it far more than I thought I would.

Elvis_Christ 12-17-2013 08:10 AM

Argento's Dracula flick was a shocker. Thought The Family was average too. I really hate seeing actors like De Niro phoning it in... not completely awful but it had just been done before and was a little tired for me.

I thought that one along with R.I.P.D were two of the better horror comedies of the year.

RIPD really surprised me - I thought it was going to be a paint by numbers men in black rip off but it ended up being a lot better

Tahrgat 12-17-2013 10:27 AM

Hands down the worst movie I saw this year was Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead. I mentioned how bad this was in another thread, but this thread seems far more appropriate. This film is so bad that it is the kinda bad you can't simply forget. I am amazed that netflix picked this sort of trash up. I know that they have many a bad film, but this really takes the frosted fecal matter cake.

Kandarian Demon 12-17-2013 01:01 PM

It was so bad that I don't even remember what it was called!

The Villain 12-17-2013 01:13 PM

Thought of some more:

Gangster Squad
Iron Man 3
The Purge

knife_fight 12-17-2013 02:44 PM

So, is RIPD basically a Dead Heat ripoff? I've been wondering that since I first saw the previews.

The worst horror movie that I saw this year would have to be Grave Encounters 2. I decided to check it out cause I loved the first film and it sadly disappointed me.

_____V_____ 12-22-2013 09:31 AM

After Earth.

A distant second would be The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Third? Hummm... A Good Day To Die Hard.

urgeok2 12-22-2013 12:49 PM

Changing mine to Zombie Hunter

This is the kind of shit that makes me hate
Horror and the idiots that make it

Right, now here`s my problem. The title alone tells you how shit this movie will be,and from your comment i am correct. The real question should be......WHY?

Why even contemplate watching this, hell,i wouldn't even bother with any trailers for such crap.

Just what is it that makes some of you guys want to spend 90 minutes of your life watching purile garbage as this.

::mad::

Because every now and then you'll strike a Street Trash or a Toxic Avenger. 9/10 times the film is shit but you still find gems. Speaking of which Father's Day was pretty top notch if you like your trashy flicks.

yup - you just never know ..

sometimes the odd clever filmmaker finds the right twist and they end up being funny. it's rare - but they're out there, and you don't know which ones they are until you see them.

I recall Monsturd as being pretty amusing

Got that sitting here for when I'm in a mood for some lowbrow flicks.

I've actually been watching a lot more big budget Hollywood stuff more than I used to. But once every couple of months I'll dig out some low budget stuff.

Will probably get caught out with Zombie Hunter because it's got Danny Trejo in it... just can't help myself ::big grin::

Try not to kick your foot through the TV set

newb 12-23-2013 04:11 PM

maybe not the worst....but definitely disappointing

I love the old school action flicks and Die Hard has been a great series...I even like "Live Free or Die Hard"...but I never even made it through the last one and I don't think I'm gonna bother to watch the rest.

also Taken 2 was a big letdown

Sculpt 12-23-2013 09:33 PM

Worst 2013 film I've seen this year?

No question: Evil Dead

I was peaking at some lists for 2013, and I didn't see many films at the theater this year, and not many 2013 on DVD/Netflix.

To me, most films of I've seen in 2000's have been fairly poor. But the 2013s I've seen have all been decent. Maybe I've just been better selecting films. ::wink::

Ok,i get your point.Yes you can find the odd gem but the two you mentioned are not one of those i`m afraid.I bought Street Trash a few years ago on a nostalgia trip, thinking it was a good movie back from what i remembered, sadly it isn't.As for Toxie...............

But as you said, the odd gem can come through. Its a pity you have to watch hours upon hours of crap to find them.

ChronoGrl 01-03-2014 04:09 AM

To be fair, Toilet of the Dead was done by the same director who did Machine Girl and Robogeisha so I can understand that if you liked those movies, you'd want to see it. He's all about schlock and there's nothing wrong with that.

I found Beautiful Creatures to be unwatchable.

Movie 43 was pretty bad but it was what it was.

Admission was a huge disappointment (really bad/unbelievable story)

The Purge had an interesting concept but failed in execution.

Man of Steel. Ohhh, boy, this didn't work for me.

Kickass 2 was a mess.

Didn't like Toxic Avenger? I didn't see it when I was younger (lets say 5-22), but heard my friends talk about it; so I knew what it was about, and a lot of the scenes. It sounded like some of the comics drew when I was a kid.

I didn't end up seeing it until well into adulthood. And for me, that mattered a lot. I had to force myself to watch it; could only get through about 40 mins, and decided I'd just read the rest for my cultural education. Having the protagonist act like a 5 year old, the lavish crudeness and cruelty... I got the idea in the first 10 mins, didn't find it entertaining.

I know a lot of people love it. I'm not saying only a teen mind would like it. I'm just saying for me that was the case. I wonder how many people saw for the first time older than 29 years old and really liked it?

No doubt. I can only take so much cartoon fighting.

These are the worst movies I saw this year:
  • Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)
  • The Final (2010)
  • The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1984)
  • American Psycho II (2002)
  • Sharknado (2013)
  • Guinea Pig 3: He Never Dies (1986)
  • Children of the Corn (2009)
  • Baise Moi (2000)
  • The House on the Edge of the Park (1980)
  • Terrifying Girl’s High School Lynch Law Classroom (1973)
  • Hostel: Part III (2011)
  • Troll (1986)
  • Ghosts of Mars (2001)
  • Friday the 13th (2009)

urgeok2 01-03-2014 02:39 PM

I was on set for Hostel 3. I have to admit - I didn't mind it
It was Hostel-lite. But I still thought it was interesting

It had some redeeming qualities, but nowhere near as good as the other two. My biggest beef with it was that it eliminated the single most interesting (and scary) theme from the first two films: our fear of other cultures, especially war-torn and desperate ones. Personally, I found Hostel to be very scary when I first saw it, mostly purely because of the concept. It made me afraid to travel to certain areas of the world. Hostel III petered away that one most redeeming quality by locating it in Las Vegas.

Also, overall it just seemed pretty amateur, the sets felt cheap, it had no child gangs shaking victims down for candy, and minus the vast, dingy, war-destructed factory locations, all it really had was a bit of mildly creative torture. Meh.

urgeok2 01-03-2014 03:33 PM

It was shot in a really cool building - a huge Masonic temple in Detroit city
As far as demonizing foreign cultures goes - I saw it as a parallel to 911 - "it can't happen here"
I liked that idea.
I also liked the twist at the beginning

It was definitely less vicious but I didn't mind do much

It's also kind of fun to watch knowing you were stsnding right there
I was inside one of the holding tanks/cages while they filmed the escape right across from me in the others :)
It adds a fun perspective

That's pretty awesome. That would definitely make it fun to watch, knowing you were right there.

I thought the twist at the beginning was pretty good too.

Troll 2 is brilliant -- the best worst movie of all time!

Troll 1... eck. Bad, and not in the good way. My opinion at least.

urgeok2 01-04-2014 12:24 PM

The older i get - the less i appreciate the - 'so bad they're good films'.

you would think that Manborg would fall into that category but it doesn't - it was a brilliant parody..

I was pretty disappointed considering Deodato's other good film goes by the name of Cannibal Holocaust. Books could be written about that film, while Edge of the Park, to me was a fairly mediocre snippet of throwaway exploitation.

My biggest two beefs were that I thought it was annoying and far-fetched that the women got sexually involved with the attackers. I also thought the twist ending was ridiculous, way beyond the limits of credibility. (SPOILERS) There's no way they would put themselves at that level of risk, resulting in rape, torture and death, just to pull off that revenge gag. If they wanted to get revenge, there are much easier and safer ways to do it. That kinda ruined it for me. (/SPOILERS)

However, from a purely exploitation film, no-logic-required standpoint, I agree I'm severely low-balling this classic. The fact that I would be happy to watch it again, even looking forward to it, means I rated it too low.
