It will be that festive time of the year again in 2 weeks or so, so let's post some films which are a must-watch for all of you during the month of October.
Here are mine :- (in no order) Trick 'r Treat Sleepy Hollow The Fog Halloween Monster House Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein The Changeling Beetlejuice The Monster Squad Poltergeist There can be numerous others, but these 10 regularly figure in my viewings every year. |

Once that goal is met (which is typically by the end of the first week of October)....I switch things around from year to year. I will begin watching all the Universal Monster films this October. |

I don't know about "must watch" but 10 Films I almost always watch around Halloween:
#1 - Trick Or Treat (1986) - This was always on when I was a kid. I was a huge Ozzy fan and when I saw him playing a preacher I always laughed. Plus the band Fastway did the soundtrack and I was a huge fan of theirs. #2 - Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) - I used to rent the VHS with some friends in high school around Halloween. Always cracked me up and I still love it. #3 - The Black Cat (1934) - Lugosi and Karloff. A movie done almost entirely with background music. German Expressionism and Beethoven's Allegretto from his 7th Symphony hauntingly played throughout. Halloween is just another excuse to watch this movie. #4 - Frankenstein (1931) - The Granddaddy. I watch it with my dad because he started me on the Universal Monsters when I was 5 or 6 years old and I always have to come back to them. #5 - Bride Of Frankenstein (1935) - I have to watch it directly after Frankenstein, and again with my dad. So glad I got to take him to the Turner Classic Movies presentation of Frankenstein & Bride Of Frankenstein last year so we could watch them both on the big screen together. #6 - At least one film from the Halloween Franchise. I've had years where I marathon'd all of them but these last couple years I just haven't had the time. I usually catch Part 4, 5 or 6 on AMC or something just to get a little Michael Myers fix. #7 - Phantasm (1979) - Just a creepy classic. How can you go wrong with being chased by The Tall Man and a ball with Spikes drilling into your head? #8 - Fright Night (1985) - I used to watch it with my dad and my older brother all the time. One of our favorites to watch together. #9 - Usually at least one from the Friday The 13th franchise. Probably my favorite series as a kid. I usually catch at least one of them on Halloween. #10 - It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) - NO Holiday is complete without a Charlie Brown Special. There are plenty of others I might watch. I never know until the mood hits me. |

Anyway, I found it pretty entertaining all through the way. It was a nice come back for Jeff Lieberman, who have made few pretty decent genre flicks back in 70's & early 80s like Squirm, Blue Sunshine & even one of my favorite 80s slasher Just before Dawn! The only complain from my part about SLH is it's bit too long, considering its pretty simple & amusing plot line which I think could be better packed in only 60 to 70 minutes. Otherwise, as a decently made low budget indie flick, I think this can be treated as a fantastic Halloween feature for family viewing! |
Definitely checking out Satan's Little Helper tonight. Hope Roshiq's assessment is correct!

1. Taste the Blood of Dracula
2. Curse of the Werewolf 3. The Brides of Dracula 4. Son of Frankenstein 5. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man 6. Dog Soldiers 7. Dumplings 8. The Howling 9. Dracula A.D. 1972 10. Halloween |
For me, the perfect Halloween movie MUST either have a paranormal story or a classic monster, but it doesn't have to be super scary... it should be a bit nostalgic and bring out the big kid in me... which means they don't nescesarily have to be super scary.
10 movies I would be very likely to watch on Halloween, in no particular order: 1. Salems Lot (original) 2. Creepshow (original) 3. The Fog (original) 4. The Amityville Horror (original) 5. Poltergeist 6. An American Haunting 7. The Haunted Mansion (yes, the Disney movie!) 8. Nosferatu 9. The Gate (what did I say about "the big kid"?) 10. The Haunted Palace (because it's not Halloween without Vincent Price) |
