American Mary (2012) What Do You Think of It ?

http://www.redcarpetcrash.com/wp-con...rican-Mary.jpg

I first discover this film on an image site connected to yahoo that got me curious
and interested in the film. American Mary stars (Katharine Isabelle) of the Giner Snaps trilogy.
Her roll in American Mary she play's Mary Mason. I can't go into to much details. But she seems to
get paid for doing different things to the victims.

It's kind of one of those torture horror films. But like in some torture films,
it's the girl that does the torturing. It's a gore fest. If you like gore, It has it.
With no unrated cut though. the film is Rated (R) But still some plenty of
gore to watch. (Katharine Isabelle) gives astonishing performance roll in
this film. I think American Mary was released in the u.s. in 2012. released
in the u.k. in 2013. The movie to me was pretty much A-ok. What did you
guys think of the film ? Love to see you're thoughts. Thanks!

Hmmm. I was actually pretty disappointed in this for a couple of different reasons -
-- Rue Morgue made a HUGE buzz about the movie in last month's issue and labelled it "Feminist horror," which definitely had me very curious
-- With such a bizarre concept of an underground body modification surgeon, I thought that the movie opened the door for some seriously disturbing and interesting body horror themes and images...

But it fell short for me. I think that it suffers from being directed by two novice filmmakers whose buzz is bigger than their bite and, honestly, without a strong film around her, Katharine Isabelle's weaknesses show - She's really not that great an actress.

I guess I was expecting more body horror, interesting body modification concepts, and, quite frankly, to be shocked. But I wasn't. Also the ending was pretty awful and dissatisfying. Huge disappointed Meh.

Agree with Chrono, though the film had an interesting premise & a lead but the ending was a disappointment.

Started this last night. I liked the set up but had to turn it off to finish later. Now I am thinking maybe I won't waste the time. Only got about 30 minutes in. She just arrived at the Surgeon party, which I am sure is supposed to go badly for her.

I was hoping for more. I kind of saw the ..... well the end coming. But the way it was up played on some body mod sites that I creep on.... well it didnt really deliver. It felt like the writers were looking to go more in depth on a few parts of the story that flopped. The teacher for one... we see him like 4 times in the movie I wish that played a bigger part. Her relationship.. or not relationship with the strip club owner..was kinda wtf did I miss.

I think it could have been awesome but somewhere along the line lost its cohesion.

Agreed with Chrono.
The story line had the potential to make a really rad flick. A female lead torture flick involving body modification? Yeah! They could have gone soooo much further with this.

It fell short for me, that's for sure.
I feel like they were trying to use the body mod "thing" to shock viewers who aren't used to seeing that type of stuff when in most cases the things these people asked to have done to them in the movie aren't that shocking nowadays.

My boyfriend said it best when he compared it to a decently made student film with a good budget.

4/10 for me, though!

I liked it but it was more of a one time watch for me

TheFext 10-27-2013 10:41 PM

I see you gave it bad reviews. but is it worth seeing still? Or should I skip it?

I hate it when people ask this. If you're curious, then check it out. Doesn't hurt.

I just watched this today, really liked it. Much more than just a shock and gore flick I thought.

Great subject matter, stylish visuals, good choice of music and a story that I found more absorbing as it progressed.

Sure they could have gone further but then of course everyone would be saying "meh, torture porn".

I hate when people that doesn't have to do with the conversation tell me what I can or what I can't say.
I asked that question to the people that are willing to tell me "Yes" or "No" if I should give the movie a chance. I didn't ask what questions YOU hate.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It had some gore but it wasn't outrageous. I liked the character and the story wasn't groundbreaking, but it held my attention. My only complaint is the ending wasn't as good as the rest of the movie. I'm not saying the ending was awful, I just expected more. I think it's worth a watch.

Yeah must agree. I thought it was a really good film but the ending was a bit "errr?".

If you enjoyed Mary though, definitely check out Dead Hooker in a Trunk, their debut film.

It was alright ...that's all i can really say about it. I guess i was expecting it to be more shocking than it actually was. It wasn't terrible (it did keep my attention, most of the time) but i wouldn't watch it again.

Will do. I appreciate the suggestion.

I blame it on marketing and hype, nonsense like "This is the scariest (/most shocking/most disturbing/most horrifying blah blah blah) film you will see this year!"

I just had a quick look at an AM poster and it has comments like "The Most Original Film of the Year" and "Incredibly Impressive" and "Absolutely Superb". Sometimes it's a real effort to actually watch a film with open eyes and not start out with a whole load of expectations based on marketing nonsense.

self_indulged 11-22-2013 08:45 PM

yeah it not bad, I do think there is a lot better horror/thriller movies out there though.

zombiegummiebear 11-26-2013 03:44 PM

I didn't love it but, I didn't hate it either. The thing is it seemed like more of a thriller than a horror movie. There were parts that could be considered but, as a whole it was really slow paced and more of a odd taboo type of premise and it didn't even go deep into this world that Mary found herself so interested in.

Basically I wanted it to be weirder and it turned out to be another typical movie. On the contrary I actually did find the ending fitting. It really had nowhere else to go.

missmacabre 12-12-2013 04:58 PM

I have to say, I really enjoyed it, but I'm very biased about my Canadian horror filmmakers.

I can tell they took a lot of inspiration from Ginger Snaps. It was bloody, and sexy. Seeing as Ginger Snaps was a coming of age movie for me when I hit puberty, American Mary is the horror movie that echoes my feeling of being a 20-something, paying off debt and making the choices I have to make in order to be stable.

I guess spoilers here:

I did think it had some good feminist views, primarily, a womans right to bodily autonomy. The woman who had her nipples removed to stop looking like a sex object and the consequences of the choice she made was a high point for me. That screamed feminism, from not just a white cis girl pov. It's very much like a trans-person wanting to be in the body that's right for them, and the attacks they suffer from loved ones and strangers for making that choice. Even the ending, it was like seeing how abortion providers are mistreated and attacked for providing services to women.

But overall, it could have been better. There were a lot of plot holes, and it was a lot more style than substance. I still very much enjoyed the movie though, and can't wait to see more from Jenn and Sylv.

I'm with you on this. I definitely think they have talent; there were a lot of really great ideas in American Mary. They're young, and it'll be interesting to see how they develop as filmmakers.

Straker 12-12-2013 09:00 PM

I never got through this one, switched it off after about an hour.... Should've been sleazy, dark and edgy but really wasn't. Half of the flick would've been right at home in a music video from the 90s.

Freak 12-13-2013 02:21 AM

Caught this on Netflix awhile back and from the description I was very intrigued.
But I though it was very dragged out and just fell flat in a lot of places.

Good analysis. Reading this actually made me appreciate the movie more. I miss you! Come back more often. <3
