American Horror Story: Coven

A new season warrants a new thread, so here you go!

Pictures from the set:

Who is playing who in the cast!

Can't wait! I loved the first two seasons. Sounds like this season it's mostly a female cast. (Kathy Bates, awesome!) I hope they find roles for Evan Peters (Kit, Tate) and Zachary Quinto (Dr. Thredson, Chad) though.

The Villain 08-03-2013 04:14 AM

I remember reading that Evan Peters was once again going to be playing a sad pathetic character like Tate in the first season

CaraBloodyCara 08-03-2013 09:07 AM

I'm really excited for this. Looks like it's a voodoo-centric theme and I can definitely dig on that.

hammerfan 08-05-2013 04:22 AM

I'm really looking forward to the new season!

I'm not sure I like what Ryan Murphy's been saying about a "lighter tone" for this season. I loved that he was pushing the envelope so far in past seasons, but we'll have to see!

Yeah hopefully that doesn't mean more choreographed musical numbers. That was pretty off the wall last season. Not saying I hated it, but I hope they don't do it again.

neverending 08-09-2013 01:26 AM

Oh my, I thought the name game was BRILLIANT. Perfect in conception and execution, considering it as a peek inside Jude's drug addled mind.

Like something right out of a David Lynch movie...

ImmortalSlasher 08-11-2013 10:43 AM

This should be better than the last season. I thought it kind of flopped at the end. At least this time I not going to be surprised by the change of theme/location like I was last time.

That one had a bit of a Blair Witch feel to kit.

I thought so, too.

I am very excited about this new season of AHS though I did not like season two all that much. I think my interest is piqued because of my love for New Orleans. I think New Orleans is one of the scariest cities in the U.S. and I wish there were more horror films set there. I absolutely loved "Skeleton Key" mostly for the bit of history/voodoo/hoodoo we get to see

hammerfan 08-28-2013 09:53 AM

Premiere is set for October 9th at 10:00 pm.

hammerfan 08-30-2013 05:55 AM

This doesn't have to do with "Coven", but I know neverending loved this:

Can you tell I'm bored at work? :D

neverending 08-30-2013 09:17 AM

Yes, I do love it!

ImmortalSlasher 09-03-2013 05:26 PM

All the quick teases make this season look really good. I like the one with the three witches that are hovering the most. Being set in New Orleans should make this even better. I've always thought that witches were interesting. I met a girl once who told me she was into Wicca. I didn't know what it was and thought she was joking when she explained it.

knife_fight 09-21-2013 03:46 AM

So, do you guys think this will be more like Suspiria, or more like Harry Potter?

I'm excited to see the show set in New Orleans. I don't live in New Orleans proper, but I know the city well enough that I expect to see a lot of locations that I recognize. I have to say that I, personally, think a story about a school for witches is dumb, and that it is set in New Orleans is kind of lazy writing and a little obvious.

That said, I'll definitely watch it, even though I didn't enjoy Season 2 nearly as much as I liked Season 1.

Also, as a side note, my faith in the world and humanity died a little bit more when I watched the trailer on youtube. The background music is "House of the Rising Sun" (of course ), and I couldn't believe how many comments of, "What song is this?" or "What's the name of the song?" I saw. People these days don't know shit about shit.

darkchamber 09-27-2013 03:04 PM

Anyone know of a good way to get American Horror Story: Asylum. I'd like to watch it before I start Coven.

I loved the first season and unfortunately didn't get a chance to watch the second.

neverending 09-27-2013 03:18 PM

It might be on Netflix, I'm not sure. Even if you can't track it down, it won't matter. Each season is a completely different storyline, characters, etc., so you won't be missing out on anything you need to know.

darkchamber 09-27-2013 06:12 PM

Good to know, thanks!

neverending 09-27-2013 07:46 PM

Looks like season two is not on Netflix, but is available on Amazon streaming for two bucks an episode.

knife_fight 09-28-2013 03:51 AM

For what it's worth, I didn't think Season 2 was nearly as good as Season 1.

neverending 09-28-2013 04:00 AM

And I thought it was better.

The Villain 09-28-2013 04:25 AM

I'll agree with Knife Fight. I liked the first season better. Although i did like the second season and i thought the finale was better.

ImmortalSlasher 09-28-2013 04:36 AM

I just watched the first real commercial with the actors. I don't know about this one now. The teasers were really good and spooky. With the actors it doesn't feel that way. I saw another teaser with a lady doing something in a chair and she had a snake tail for legs. Spooky stuff like that is what I'm expecting. Not what might be a modern day witch school / sanctuary.

neverending 09-28-2013 05:28 AM

After two seasons of delving into our national psyche and all the horrible things that can be found there, playing out on a rich tapestry of themes, multi-generational storytelling, with layer upon layer of subtext, you really think all this coming season will be about is a school for witches? That's like saying the first season was just a haunted house story and the second season was about some crazy nuns.

True enough. I think my snide comment in the post above, comparing this season to Harry Potter, was made just after I finished season 2, which I was disappointed with. Incidentally, I completely forgot that my previous post said the same thing that I posted this morning.

Spoiler Alert!!!
I still thought it was great, just not as great as season 1, but I'm biased against anything involving aliens. I hate alien crap, for some reason, but I still like scifi. It's easier for me to go along with ghosts and serial killers, than to believe that aliens came down out of the sky.

I wish there were more free episodes for Prime members. Thanks for checking.

I still think the first season was the best. That was the one that was constantly trying to push things with surprises and reveals. I've already forgotten about the second season. I guess that's why I was disappointed by the first real trailer with the actors. It didn't look anywhere near and spooky and dark as those teaser trailers.

Against aliens in general? Or just in the aliens are messing with us type of thing?

New teasers and a brilliant motion poster! I love the poster.

Season 2 was far more extreme, both in the amount of horror depicted and in diverse subject matter, than season 1. I think it might be a generational thing, as season 2 dealt with a lot of things that were very much straight from the headlines in the 50s-70s- uncovering of Nazi atrocities, the Lee Harvey Oswald case, UFO sightings, forced medical experimentation, ostricization of lesbians in public life...

If you didn't grow up hearing about these things, season two might not resonate with you the way it might with older viewers.

That makes a lot of sense. It definitely didn't resonate in any kind of personal way with me. I think a problem i had with it was that there was a lot going on all at once. The first season had a lot too but it all seemed to fit together. The second season just seemed all over the place.

It definitely wasnt bad. It was a lot creepier then the first season and as i've said before had a better ending. I think i just enjoyed the ride better during the first season.

My wife, who is actually younger than me, said the same thing. I was bitching about the aliens and she, more or less, said, "Aliens were hot shit in the 60's!"

The point being that the show was being true to what was in the headlines at the time, as far as unexplained stuff goes.

I really don't know. To me, it's just hard to believe that aliens are "among us" or whatever you want to say about them. I find it much easier to believe in ghosts and monsters, for some reason.
In my mind, including aliens is kind of lazy writing. Aliens can do anything, so if you need something to happen, that couldn't possibly happen in real life, throwing an alien in there makes it plausible.

I fully realize this is flawed logic, and my rational mind tells me that, but I can't help it.

Aliens in scifi or outer space = ok

Aliens on earth interfering in human affairs = dumb

I think aliens are always possible. It's like the what's over the hill story. It's just a matter of getting over the hill. There were a lot of good sci-fi stories from that time period. I'm still catching up on a bunch. I saw a good Twilight Zone about a year or so ago about aliens in a bar.
