What film is this?

Hi guys,

I remember this vivid VHS cover whenever I went to the video store as a kid growing up in the 90s. I can't remember what the name of the film was but the cover was so scary that it has since been stuck in my mind (I'm 20 now).

From memory, the cover has a man's head in the dark, cloudy sky. He has no hair as the top of his head merges with the dark sky or clouds. His head also doesn't take up the whole cover but more of the corner of it with what might be a house on a hill. I'm pretty sure it's a horror film as it is rated 18+ and has a very dark theme.

Could anyone please help locate this film?

Thanks.

Same movie, but he has hair. Similar to what you are describing though.

It is none of those films I'm afraid.

The film is probably from the 90s or maybe somewhere in the 80s. The cover is black and white and the man's head looks like a tornado is about to form from the clouds.

This picture I drew below is from a memory that is 14 years old so please forgive its obscurity and my lack of drawing skills haha.

Not the same layout as your drawing, but is it Fright Night?

I think it could be "Fright Night", but could it also be "Return of the Living Dead 2"? That does not have a house on a hill cover, but otherwise it fits, it does have the face of man in a horrific distorted cloud, but it is seen hovering above a few houses, though the houses are quite small.

I didn't think of that one, yeah, that could be it.

gronge 09-11-2012 08:05 AM

None of those films either I'm afraid.

Because this was so long ago, the film might not be a horror film at all but the age rating and dark theme of it doesn't make sense for it to be something else.

Is it "the Manitou"?

horrorman 10-10-2012 05:05 PM

O-k, I have some more films in mind.

One is "Paperhouse", it has a house on a road, the house is on fire. The person seen on the cover is a girl, though.

Another is "People under the Stairs", we see a gigantic skull hovering above three houses.

Neither covers are black and white, though, but there are tons of horror films like this.

Do you remember anything else besides the face of the guy and the house?

Return Of The Living Dead 2's cover has a skull formed out clouds in the sky above a house but as already said there's many this could be.

This is just a shot in the dark but I immediately thought of The Dark Half film poster.

Could it also be Grandmother's House?

I think I found it out.

I think you're all leading yourselves on a wild goose chase. The poster clearly states he's describing a VHS cover, which are almost always different, radically different from the DVD covers. This is due to copyright issues with the cover artist.

So, unless you find a site that has an archive of old VHS covers, posting DVD covers is an exercise in futility.

It could also be To All A Good Night (1980).

The Gate - definitely The Gate

horrorman 04-13-2013 08:57 PM

I think it is also Beyond the Darkness. It looks just like the sketch you posted.
