Too old to be scared? How to get in the mood for horror.
I've been reading through a bunch of saved topics with people saying how they aren't scared of current or any horror movie. I believe you are more susceptible when you are younger. I'm talking before teens. Perhaps even before double digits. Things are just bigger and more unknown when you are younger. Every experience is new. Being alone in the dark at a theater or sitting in front of the TV at night is a different experience as a kid compared to as an adult. However, there are ways to get in the mood if you are older.
1. You have to like movies. I mean really like movies. If you don't then an old classic horror movie with different cinematography, setup, sounds, etc. will probably do nothing for you. 2. Don't watch any trailers. I have no idea why people will hear about a horror movie and watch a trailer thus spoiling any potential surprise. It's that new experience that kids have you are trying to recreate. 3. Watch the movie at night. Maybe after midnight on a good setup with surround sound. Perhaps even alone. If you watched a scary movie as a kid it was probably alone even if friends were there because of your personal experience of the movie. Basically, after the movie you want to be paranoid looking in dark corners and stuff. 4. Not to endorse drinking. But know your limits with your favorite alcoholic beverage and push right to the level where your rational senses are depressed a bit. After all, when you are young the idea of a lot of these horror creatures is possible. As an adult, some of them can seem silly. What do some of you guys do to get yourself in the mood to watch horror movies? |

A spooky film with ghosts and little child ghosts going "la la...la la la" would be super fucking scary whilst stoned to me. |

I sit ALONE with ALL lights switched off.I hate company while watching a movie.I send the wife and kids upstairs and let my indulge.
Its a fair trade,i only do it at the weekends, during the week they have it their way. I like some beers and at the end of the viewing a have my supper,be it a pizza, kebab,a hot curry or sometimes just a sandwitch, all depends on how hungry i am. I have a 42 plasma with 5.1 surround but i have to be respectful of my neighbours which is a bummer.I need a detatched house next time. But the two key ingredients are to be by yourself and in the dark.NEVER watch a horror movie during the day. |
It was so much better when we were younger and more easily scared.
I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was...about nine or ten, I suppose. In the daytime...on Easter Sunday. I still had nightmares about it for ages after haha! Except they were never set in Texas...but it was the family. I'm sure on a bus in Birmingham in one of them. "I just can't take no pleasure in killing" |
I remember watching the original dawn of the dead as a kid and then having to go home for my tea ,my mum had made chicken and I remember nearly Barfing as my sis kept pretending to be a zombie and made slurpy chomp noises .Henceforth ,I try not to eat if im watching horror !

However, this is a good example of a movie leaving thoughts in your mind. Something all good movies should do whether scary or not. |
