Movie vs Book
I used to read some horror when I was younger and especially liked to read the books that movies were based on. I haven't read horror in a number of years but am thinking of picking up the genre again. What I'm hoping to accomplish with this thread is a general discussion about which books you believed were better than the movie, worse than the movie, or just as good as the movie.
From what I remember, I really thought that The Exorcist was both a great book and a great movie. I haven't read it in a number of years but I remember the movie staying pretty true to the book, for the most part. |
Recently i read A Clockwork Orange.
Now the movie is one of my favorite movie's ever. I enjoyed the book too (which i read after the movie) but couldnt decide which i liked better and that was because i realized that they were essentially different stories. They were the same story in what happened with some exceptions but ultimately the movie was a character study while the book was a morality tale. |
I go with the books. If the movie is based on a book, 99.999% of the time the book will be superior. If the other way around, not quite such a sure thing. Joe Millard's novelization of THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY, was terrible, the film being one of my all time favorites.

In my oppinion the mist is a perfect example where a flick was actually better then the novel, or in this case short story: http://www.themysterybox.org/stephen-kings-the-mist/ |

The miniseries isn't even close to as good as the novel. Having said that, I loved the miniseries when I was a kid and it still has some nostalgic value to it.
|
im gutted coz i watched the movie heaps as a kid so now the book would suck coz i know the story, and i just know the book would have been a million times better
|
No Wiz, you don't know the story at all, not really. You know parts of it, but they gutted the book so bad in the miniseries that it is almost unrecognizable compared to the novel. Read it or don't, that's up to you but you WILL be missing a classic if you don't.

I've not read It either and I really should.
I loved BOTH The Shining film and the book both for different reasons therefore I see them as completely seperate entities. I agree with Villain that Pet Sematary was better as a film and I think Salem's Lot was better as a book. I also prefer Hellraiser to the Hellbound Heart which I've said before I think to be Barker's weakest book.Closely joined by The Thief Of Always of course. |

I had seen It before I had read it so when I was reading it I kept thinking to myself, "This wasn't in the movie, this wasn't in the movie, they left this out, too..." There were things that I did and didn't like about the miniseries but it is definitely not my favorite King adaptation. The book was better.
When it comes to Cujo, I hated the movie so I've never been bothered to read the book. From what I read, the book isn't very good either though. |
