Insidious
 

I've been contemplating whether to watch this movie or not...

i have heard that it is somewhat similar to Poltergeist, but that film in particular wasn't exactly my favorite...

Would I be wasting my time with it?

I really liked it. It actually freaked me out a little bit. It was able to create a tense, spooky feel to it that's been missing from horror movies lately. I definitely recommend.

I have mixed feelings about Insidious. It felt very Stephen King-ish. In the fact that the first half is good & the second half was slow & silly. For some reason it felt like two different movies to me. I will be honest, I couldn't make it through the last 15 minutes , it got so boring and I was falling asleep.

The second half did remind of the Poltergeist.... Which is good & bad. I think Poltergeist is cheesy as fuck. It was only good to me as a kid.

I can understand younger, less jaded horror fans would like Insidious. It has some really great moments. Who knows, maybe the ending pulled the whole thing together. I give it 5/10. If you want two movies in one . I recommend Perkins 14 instead.

Stephen King is an excellent writer and an inspiration to me. I have no idea how you can say the second part of his stuff is slow and silly. Maybe you're talking about his movie adaptions and if you are then that has nothing to do with him as they differ from his books a lot for the most part. But hey everyone's entitled to their own opinion. That just happens to be mine.

Perkins 14 sucked....which i guess is the point you were trying to convey.

I know what you mean. The search function isn't always successful particularly on vaguely defined subjects. Insidious was just fresh in my memory, so the threads might be helpful (I honestly can't remember what was written in them or how long they were).

I can't talk much about Stephen King as a writer. Besides the fact most of his main characters seem to be writers :rolleyes: Because everyone in the world has the same profession. I'm referring to King's movies only. Like shIT, I mean a giant fucking spider ? Stephen King is a bit of a whore putting his name on that countless crap released. But what do I know ? I'm a Clive Barker fan...

I don't think Insidious sucked. I don't think Perkins 14 sucked either. It just wasn't for me. Many think my taste in film isn't "Normal"

Whats wrong with most of his characters being writers? They say to write what you know and what does he know better then being a writer? I've read lots of other novel's by different authors who have done the same thing. Also in regards to IT, in the novel the closest description they can give of the form IT takes at the end is a giant spider, that doesn't mean that's actually what it was. Also i dont really see whats wrong with that anyway. IT took on people's fears and the majority of the world is afraid of spiders and there have been tons of horror/sci-fi movies about giant spiders.

Stephen King had nothing to do with the movie/miniseries so how can you blame him for his name being attached? If those responsible felt like attaching his name how is that his fault? Also Stanley Kubrick and Quentin Tarantino and many other directors do that same thing and even Clive Barker's name is attached to Hellraiser and he actually was involved in the film.

Valid point, I was so disappointed when I realized I wasted three hours for a cheesy giant spider being defeated by an inhaler, I just forgot about the whole plot.

My girlfriend read the book. She said the young female character fucks all the boys before facing "It". Is that true ? And why keep out that amazing scene. hahaha.

Actually it was after they fought it. They lost the connection they had with each other and couldnt find their way out of the sewers so they did that to reconnect. The book explains it better. Also i havent seen the movie in a long time but in the book, they dont defeat It just by using the inhaler. They actually enter into its world and psychically battle it in a interplanetary dimension or something like it. Its hard to explain.

Also there are no gay scenes. They all just take turns having sex with the girl which she actually forgets about and doesnt even remember until she has sex with Bill again when they're older.

Oh man i forgot to mention the giant turtle that serves as a spiritual guide while in the other dimension.

IT is actually one of the few Stephen King books I haven't read yet so maybe I should. Did Stephen King ever show any gay characters in his books? In the majority of the books I have read I've noticed a subtle homophobia in his writing that caused me to stop reading his books-Don't get me wrong I'm not attacking King it could just be me I hope I'm wrong-The Shining, Insomnia and Salem's Lot will always be among my fave books. But I do much prefer Clive Barker like Deposable becuase he is much more open minded and world-wise in his writing not to mention I adore the intricacies of his plots, borderline sado-machism, metaphysics etc.

Anyway finally watched Insidious and I think it can quite rightly be classed as one of my fave ever films. I was so engrossed and impressed that I freaked when my phone went off towards the end lol.

I don't recall any gay characters. What made you think of the possibility of him being homophobic? I never picked up on anything like that.

As I say I hope I'm wrong I just noticed some homophobic language especially in I *think* (it is a long time since I read any King) in The Dead Pool, The Dark Half and The Stand. But really I don't want this to turn into an attack on King he's made too much of a contribution to horror so I have to respect that.

Now I have to go back and read those again because I sure don't remember anything like that in his books.

Out of the three you've mentioned, ive only read The Dark Half and i dont remember any homophobic behavior however its been awhile so i might just not remember. Nothing like that really sticks out to me in memory though.

OK maybe I should read The Dark Tower series back to back lol

This was quite a while ago when I was reading LOADS of books one after the other so its possible I'm mistaking The Dark Half with The Green Mile which I know sounds odd but that's another book I read at the time. BUt I DO remember that the language King used in some of his books upset me because it was neither tongue in cheek or jokey and seemed like serious hate rather than characterized opinion therefore I stopped reading his books.

An evil pen name coming to life and a guy with psychic healing powers in prison do sound similar. :rolleyes:

Just messing around. That could be true. I actually havent read a Stephen King book in awhile. The last one being The Regulators which is techinally a Bachman novel which matters because he did write slightly differently when he wrote those. That's not really the kind of thing i would remember so there could be something like that i just dont remember it. If i see any of that kind of behavior in any future books of his i read, ill let you know.

I never did read any of his Bachman books-I hope I've just took something he wrote the wrong way-it was nothing to do with any of the plots it was just something I remember picking up on in his writing and put me off his books.

Anyway back to Insidious-I wonder if there will be a sequel?

I don't know how i feel about a sequel. I liked how it ended, i wouldnt want them to change that or just have it be about a different family. I'd rather it just stayed like it is.

I'd like to be a different family with more about the astral realms.

I just don't want it to go the route of Saw, Paranormal Activity and Final Destination. All three of those movies were serious and had a point to make and then they were turned into a franchise and the whole purpose of the films were lost and instead were turned into an yearly attraction or novelty act.

What's wrong with leaving Insidious alone to be remembered how it is?

so yea i finally watched Insidious and yea....CORNY!!!!

I definetly saw the poltergeist connection and I didnt really care for that movie either.

I did like that they had those subtle "Saw" refrences with the jigsaw doll drawn on the chalkboard and that Adam from the first saw film was on there...

But this film just didnt do it for me... meh.

The guy who played Adam actually wrote Saw and Insidious as well as starred in them.

I saw Insidious a few months ago. I thought some of it was kinda scary, some of it wasn't. Not too bad in my opinion.

Okay, Insidious is not the greatest thing since Poltergeist, but Perkins 14? Get fuckin' real, please.

I saw this film in the theater and it was much better than I thought it would be. The music itself really reminisces with the older films quite well. The plot had a twist in it that I haven't seen in most horror films these days. The acting was great. Overall, you may not want to watch this alone, lol. I remember clearly, popcorn flying here and there. For a rating; for the sole purpose of the scare factor and intensity that kept your eyes peeled to the screen, a 5/5.

I thought it was fantastic as well. Would have loved to have seen it in theaters, just to have seen everyone else freaking out and throwing popcorn. It's why I prefer not to go to the movies alone. Might as well wait for it to come out on DVD if I go to the movies by myself.
