Rob Zombie Yay or Nay
This comes off the back of the AITH column. Is RZ a figure to be loathed, loved or tolerated?
For me, he's someone who loves horror movies, has delivered when being original but somehow fell into the remake/reimagine trap. |
He's only remade one movie and then did a sequel of that remake. I wouldn't say he's fallen into any traps. He was going to remake The Blob but decided to make his own original movie Lord's of Salem which is a much better idea. I personally like Zombie but he's limited as a director, he can really only make one kind of movie or at least that's all i've seen from him. Halloween was slightly different but he fell right back into his comfort zone with the dreadful H2. But i enjoyed House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects was excellent. I'll have to see what he can do with his next film.

Do you have a link to that column? I'd like to read it.

He's definitely a figure that's almost cool to hate. I've lost count of the amount of posts I've read over the years since House Of 1000 Corpses releases bagging on him. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course but it cracks me up how mentioning he sucks (along with remakes suck) is usually an opening line from a lot of noobs to the genre throw out there to try and gain some cred. It's so fucking sheepish. Zombie's style is IMO handles the self reflexive style of cinema that draws from the past with more subtlety than say Tarantino's work. I didn't hear nearly as big of an uproar screaming "RIPOFF!!" upon the release of Kill Bill or Inglourious Basterds. Both those films more blatantly ripped off other films than either House Of 1000 Corpses or The Devil's Rejects ever did. But that's a whole other thread :p ...so to make a long story short I think he's one of the better directors in recent memory with a really distinct style. Miles ahead of the likes of Adam Green, James Wan and Eli Roth. |
I think he started off at the top of his game and has been going downhill since then, kind of like M. Night Shamalayan (or however you spell that).
I didn't much like his Halloween films, I thought House of 1,000 Corpses was brilliant and Devil's Rejects a respectable sequel. I think he has a lot of potential to be unleasehed and we'll see more great work from him. Then again, a lot of modern horror directors started really strong and never reached the heights of their early offerings again- Carpenter, Dante, Hooper, Romero... |
I really enjoyed the tales of the Firefly Clan and even enjoyed Halloween up until he escaped the mental institution. I think he has more good horror left in him.
If only Werewolf Women Of The S.S. became a reality.:( |

I think he'll get better over time, he seems to learn very well. Even with his music he seemed to grow, recognize what wasn't working, and change accordingly. We'll see, for now I say yay.

I'll have to give Educated Horses a spin.
I want La Sexorcisto on LP so bad but fuck it's expensive. Kinda weird considering there's so many copies out there. I can understand the steep prices for the real early records. Guess I'll just have to save up and bite the bullet and get it one day :D |
i was never a fan of his music, but i think he has potential in movies.
|
I make a point of avoiding him, along with Eli Roth.

I think on the basis of The Devil's Rejects he has shown a lot of potential its just unfortunate that his name is attached to the Halloween remakes.

DISAGREEMENT ! Don't even get me started how much I disliked "Halloween II". The pointless hospital dream sequence, Mother & horse ghost, New child actor, Doctor Loomis character is Hollywood Elite. Teenage girls singing MC5.. I could go on & on. Rob Zombie Sucks A Big Fat Cock List 1. Shitty Moon Zombie - Putting his wife in lead Roles. Despite the fact everyone know she is the worst actress on the planet. The Yoko Ono effect. You can see Rob thinking "FUCK ! I killed you in the first one... what can I do to get you into the Sequel " 2. Unbelievable Dialogue - All his characters seem white trash with over the top personalities. His characters fill in awful dialogue with cursing, they sound ignorant & unbelievable. 3. Overkill. Since his movies lack depth & plot, Rob's main focus is on gore. The dramatic ways his characters die. 4. B-movie actors - We get it. You like the same movies we like. So use every washed up horror actor... Nothing original. 5. Halloween is a masterpiece - There is very few masterpieces in Horror. But most of us agree John Carpenters Halloween is one of them. Anyone remaking it is only doing us a disservice & not a true fan. Furthermore, I think Eli Roth, James Wan, Lucky Mckee, are talented and have progressed the genre further. Rob Zombie is a gimmick. |

i think he tries to hard.he needs to come up with something original of his own instead of remakes and copying other movies.

Anyone who says nay to Rob Zombie clearly has a problem... House of 1000 Courpses, and if thats not proof enough then go watch The Devils Rejects, point proven.
|
ok not disagreeing he is a good director but like house of thousand corpses when watching it was like i seen it all before, chainsaw masacre, and 50 other horror movies all rammed into one movie.
|
House of 1000 Corpses- I liked this when I saw it in the theater but each time I watch it now I like it drastically less. The characters in the movie often get annoying and I don't like that it feels like I am watching a 2 hour version of one of his music videos.
The Devils Rejects- Loved this movie, one of the best of the last decade no doubt about it. Its one of the few recent horror movies I have seen that I really have nothing to complain about. Halloween- I understand what he was going for with this, trying to show Myers childhood, creating the monster, blah blah blah. It was a good idea but it didn't work for me. Halloween 2- absolute crap, possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. I can't think of any real redeeming quality in H2. I hated the whole white horse, talking to his mom attempt at going into his mind bs modern take on a franchise that doesn't need that type of spin or explanation. The same goes for Friday the 13th (a better remake, but I still have a few issues with it). H2 was bad to the point that I seriously might not see another movie of his ever. |

i liked the saw movies, well the first 3, then like everything else they killed them off with all the followups.

After all is said and done, no one can argue that House of 1000 Corpses garnered a ton of attention to gore driven horror that would not have been otherwise made. And while the dialogue is sketchy at times, and the characters rely on profanity to get through their scenes, I can think of several directors who had similiar qualms.
John Carpenter's Halloween... "Totally" Dialogue was sketchy at best alot of the time. Wes Craven's Nightmare On Elm Street... The acting of Nancy's mother was horrible. Sean S. Cunningham's Friday The 13th... With the exception of Pamela Voorhies, the acting was shite. All Im saying, in a nutshell, is that even the most iconic directors/movies have their flaws if youre looking for them. What makes movies have fans is the good they find in them. And in all of Rob Zombies movies, the special effects, lighting, sound, and yes gore are all pretty excellent. |
