Metallica - Most Influential Rock Group of the last 30 Years
Metallica has been voted the most influential rock group of the last 30 years by readers of the British magazine Kerrang!
The poll is included in the next issue of Kerrang!, which celebrates 30 years since the magazine launched in June, 1981. “It gives me a very warm and fuzzy feeling that Kerrang! Magazine have voted Metallica as the band that most changed their lives,” said drummer Lars Ulrich. “I remember the first issue of the magazine in 1981. I had made a pilgrimage to England because I was obsessed with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. I travelled all over the country and that first issue accompanied me everywhere.” Paying tribute to Iron Maiden who placed third, Ulrich said: “Iron Maiden have been the blueprint for everything that we have ever wanted to do.” Like all lists, this one is sure to generate discussion amongst rock fans, with some questionable acts making the list -

Hell yeah!
Metallica FTW! Well deserved :D |
They certainly are a brilliant live band. I caught them in Sydney near the end of last year, and it was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.

I'm not wild about that list, but to each his own I guess. |
I can easily understand why Maiden is named, but where the hell is Dream Theater on that list???
Or Evanescence/Nightwish on that matter. |

Hmm... |

Motorhead should be on that list.. Nirvana should have been mentioned (but I guess it is Kerrang!) |

They should've been in top 5. The magazine suck!! |

So Nirvana doesn't qualify because Kerrang is strictly a metal magazine? If so, I'd have to question the presence of the Foo Fighters on that list. |
I'd question alot of bands on that list.
|
Linkin Park ?!?!?.....REALLY

Green Day, technically a punk band but responsible for spawning clone after clone after clone. Iron Maiden & Slipknot, absolutely. At stages over the last 30 years they've been the top of the metal heap. The rest are an absolute joke. My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park and Bullet... are clearly only there because the current teen readership misunderstood the question. I'd strongly debate their substance. Without going into detail, I'll offer three undoubtably better, more obvious selections: Slayer, Guns n Roses and Faith No More. And if you're allowing punk music then Nirvana should be second in terms of influence. I would've endorsed Black Sabbath but I think they're pre 30 years ago. AC DC, you betcha. Blink, Ozzy, Foos? No way! QOTSA and in particular Josh Homme are way ahead. |
I don't think Metallica can be too smug about topping a list that contains the crimes against music of My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park.
Put in Nirvana, Skunk Anansie and Placebo or many other acts that are no less metal than Foofighters |

What a fucking rubbish list.
Metallica and Iron Maiden were influential but stopped putting out good albums after 1988. Metallica are more influential these days in showing people what NOT TO DO if you're in a band. The majority of modern extreme metal is influenced by Slayer... why they aren't on that list is just pure ignorance. No mention of Black Metal? Like most of the long standing music mags Kerrang is joke and this list just enforces that fact. [/rant] |
01 Metallica
Metallica I agree with to a point, though I don't mind their efforts up to the early 90's. They lack consistancy and yeah they've definitely taken a huge nose-dive. They *could* probably be credited with being an entry point into a certain type of rock for people to be fair...and they did have some GREAT songs...but yeah "did" truly applies here. Number 1 spot? Not at all. 02 Green Day Disagree. It's whiny sounding. No kind of profound lyrics (not that this is essential) and these days if I hear it, I'll change the station. They had their heyday, but really to me they're just another pop-rock band that kind of got popular. If you're mentioning shit like this, I'd have thrown up The Offspring into a much higher position, or say RHCP - both would be more at home on this list, though I don't think either of THOSE would make the top 10. 03 Iron Maiden I can get behind this one. 04 Slipknot Nope. I mean, they could have been better, they just never were. 05 My Chemical Romance ...Wouldn't call it a rock group... 06 Linkin Park Nope, not at all. One of the whiniest bands I've ever heard. I'm all for fusion, as I find it interesting but this doesn't mean it's going to be anywhere near prolific. Also can't stand the lyricist, "cat being strangled" actually applies when I think of him. 07 Bullet For My Valentine Who? 08 Blink 182 Another 90's pop rock group. I actually liked the first song I heard from them "Dammit", (even though I thought it kind of borrowed a lot of style from the mighty mighty bosstones) I dunno, perhaps it appealed to my teen angst? But then, nothing else they ever did even sounded LIKE this song...they just became IMO a comedy band trying to nip the heels of the bloodhound gang. 09 Ozzy Osbourne Him but not Black Sabbath? What? 10 Foo Fighters Hit and miss for me...I like some songs, I hate others...they're an ok band, and I don't have anything too negative to say about them...I'd be interested in hearing what they sounded like if they weren't trying to appeal to such a wide audience. That said for this band to make the top 10, is ridiculous. Are all of these meant to be "for the last 30 years?". It's like they almost completely ignored the 70's...for the subject matter that's pretty absurd. |
If it's influential, where's Social Distortion? So many bands try and fail to sound like them. Bahaus? TALKING HEADS?
|
I would guess that Blink 182 actually is inspired by Green Day. So they should be scratched from the list, coz all the bands inspired by Blink 182 would also be influinced by Green Day. Know what i'm sayin?
I's the same thing with Iron Maiden. The new Powermetal bands that sees the light of day are most likely bands influenced by bands that are influenced by Iron Maiden. No, I'm not smoking weed. |
I think there's a big difference in a list that represents 'influential' acts and a list that's just stating who were the most popular bands in stages over a 30 year span.
Slayer's Reign in Blood and Pantera's Vulgar...are the absolute apex in thrash but no mention. Faith No More and their innovative rap/jazz/thrash fusion style must be the biggest influence on 'nu metal'. Green Day are constantly copied and, although pure shite now, when Dookie came out they were a really interesting good band. Swap Ozzy for Sabbath. What about being daring enough to include less popular but more influential bands. Napalm Death? Marilyn Manson? Sonic Youth? Incubus? |
Green Day blew up big but I'm not sure if I'd call them influential considering the majority of the well known pop punk bands were playing shows/releasing records at the same time and had been since the late 80s. The whole "Pretty Fly For A White Guy" era Offspring made more of a mark on the modern bands like Good Charlotte IMO.
With you on the Faith No More influence on nu-metal. Rage Against The Machine played a big part in that too. It gets quite complicated once you delve into it :D |
