Characters you DESPISE
Watching the Mist the other day got me fairly riled up, mainly from the existence of Mrs. Carmody. Particularly as she shouts "And the whore too, kill 'em all!" she just becomes someone it is very easy to despise. Of course, if anything this is a credit to Marcia Gay Harden's acting - she's very clearly meant to be hated.
It's just an odd feeling when you go beyond disliking a character because you are aware they're the antagonist to hating them as though they were a real person in your life. I wondered, are there any characters you guys truly hate? |

I do not have that many despised characters as usually movie characters fall into one of three categories for me, either I love them, or I love to hate them, or they are just there to be filler or to serve a purpose for the plot and I just do not really care either way. However there are some I hate.
The granddaughter of the old witch in Drag Me To Hell was just annoying, yes off course she should be angry that her grandmother lost her house and died, but she know the grandmother is killing this woman and she acts like a complete snot even if she have to know that there is a limit as to how much the main character is to blame. Dr Rush in Stargate SGU, okey this is a TV series however this character is so annoying, he is a Baltar wannabe being a self absorbed scientist who constantly screw the group over for his own gains, but he lack all the charm of Baltar of Battlestar Gallactica and I do not hate him in a way so it would be satisfying to see him fall, I just think he is there and get in the way of my enjoyment of the series. The husband in Paranormal Activity. Seriously he do not want his wife to contact someone who can help her as it would hurt his male ego to let someone else handle it, in addition he taunts the ghost/demon, films it and play with a Ouija board, everything his wife says he should not do as he will only make it worse. All through the film he only cares about his own ego and acts like a little kid, going so far as to get angry with his wife when she gets more and more scared even if it is her fault that she is in this much trouble. He is a symbol of every man or woman who have let pride get in the way of letting loved ones get the help they need and therefore he is on the top of my most hated movie characters list! |
This is just my personal opinion but I have to go for all the characters at the beginning of Cloverfield before the monster attacked. They were so insipid and shallow that I couldnt believe they spent so much time building their characters in order for you to "care" about them. It completely backfired for me and I ended up rooting for the monster. Sorry.

Sheesh! Such strong feelings over mildly annoying characters. How about Mrs. Iselin?http://calitreview.com/wp-content/up...manchuria1.jpg

Rosemary Woodhouse. She has so many chances to get out and it is so blindingly obvious that something is up and she just stays there and drinks the neighbour's freaky potions and shrugs off the fact that her husband boned her in her sleep. She may have not known the full extent of what was going on but -damn- it was weird enough to get out sooner rather than later...
She is quite sexy though - so I can't get too angry at her. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HIS EYES?! |
Oh, also any human character from Stephen King's IT. They all deserved to die - Tim Curry was THE MAN in that film.

Wickerfan I realise what I said may sound a bit harsh but what annoyed me in Cloverfield was just how long they spent building up these characters to make you "Care" for them. I'm not heartless and I'm used to annoying characters in horror. But Cloverfield was trying to make out these were ordinary innocent everyday folk that we should feel sorry for when actually to me they were coming off as despicable and ugly examples of humanity.

My response was very tongue-in-cheek. But you know it's true.

Oh also ferretchucker you should try and get hold of Ken Russell's The Devils. There are characters in that who make that character in The Mist look like a saint. Sadly its banned in the UK and I doubt it will ever be released in DVD. The only likable characters are Oliver Reed and the woman he likes. Its full of scenes of masterful cinematography and adequately portrays the extremes of human greed and prejudices. Yes it takes things to the extreme (obviously censors think too far) but it saddens me that a film that so wholeheartedly captures the essences of insanity and miscarriages of justice will be seen by so few people.

On topic: Nurse Ratched.... If I had to just list irritating and annoying characters I'd be here a long time. |

@neverending - thank you for pointing out The Devils DVD. I checked Amazon about a month ago and it wasn't there. It's one of those films I've come around to really liking after initially dismissing it. Also, I watched a film recently called Mother Joan Of The Angels which seems to take place shortly after the events in The Devils. It's not graphic, but still very haunting and disturbing. |

any character who escape the slaughter! (joke)
Characters I despise?
Well... any character who escape the slaughter, e.g: children in the latest Piranhas (II 3D). Too bad for them to slip to safety... Besides, horror characters are usually so cartoonish and artificial I do not feel the identification whatever the hero... And I do not like the hero nor dislike the villain. Many horror films rely on the body count and boobies shots, which is a good move, because most of them are boring if we take off these two elements. Or we slip out of the " B movie" specification to enter the land of fantastic films much more horror: "Cat people" (by Tourneur) or a fantastic film based on "the turn of the screw". However it seems difficult to get identified with the hero, and difficult to despise the villain. Have a nice day to all! L. |

Absolutely couldn't stand Dr. Chilton in The Silence of the lambs, he was even worse in the novel. I HATED him.
Other characters I hated, I hated that girl Melissa, I think that was her name? I think this character was either in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) or Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason takes Manhattan (1989). She's either the girl in Part VII who makes fun of Tina (Main Protagonist) or the coke-head prom queen who seduces the teacher in Part VIII aboard the cruise ship. They look somewhat similar, but I can't put a name on either of them, all I remember is that one of their names were Melissa. Both were blondes though. I don't really pay too much attention to Jason's victims, I'm just really infatuated with Slasher film characters. |
