Hidden Gems?? The 1980s

Films from the 1980s that I haven't seen, that didn't make the HDC lists, that have an IMDB rating of 6.5 or higher. Any great classics in here?

Laurin (1989)
Anguish (1987)
Deja Vu (1987)
The Fourth Man (1983)
Angst (1983)
Pin (1988)
We're Going To Eat You (1980)
The 'burbs (1989)
The Company Of Wolves (1984)
Stagefright (1987) (#6 - Roshiq's Top Giallos)
White Dog (1982)
The Hidden (1987)

Any you're familiar with, like or hate, I'd like to hear about.

The 'Burbs: Quality comedy. Great cast, great characters. The set, directing and characters all help to bring a slightly surreal feel to what is essentially a fun comedy with dark tones. With so many negative reviews out there, its hard to really recommend this one, but personally I'm a huge fan of this one and think its hugley underappreciated. Quirky, creative and bags of fun.

The Hidden: 80's sci-fi classic. Must watch.

White Dog: Solid 'message' movie. Not a great film, but poses some interesting questions. Worth a watch.

Thanks Straker. I don't know how I missed The 'burbs and The Hidden; they both look great. White Dog worries me. If the dog dies, I'll freak.:(

I think The Burbs is hilarious... The Hidden is GREAT and The Company of Wolves is fantastic.

.

Agreed..

I like White Dog alot but I'm a bit Sam Fuller fan..

Anguish (1987) - Wasn't mad about this.

Pin (1988) - Creepy/underated film - check it out.

We're Going To Eat You (1980) Crazy kung-fu cannibal comedy by Tsui Hark. Kinda like a martial arts Indiana Jones played for laughs.

The Company Of Wolves (1984) - Cool Adult fairy tale consisting of a number of storys.

Stagefright (1987) Excellent Slasher

Weirdly neither seen or heard of these:

Laurin (1989)
Deja Vu (1987)
The Fourth Man (1983)
Angst (1983)

TheWickerFan 01-27-2011 07:52 AM

Thanks again guys. I'll have new stuff to watch for quite a while now.:)

roshiq 01-28-2011 10:28 PM

Pin (1988)....A beautiful psychological horror film. Loved it.
Stagefright (1987)...It's no. 6 in my Top Giallos list.

I've read pretty good things about the following two; looking forward to see them soon:

The Company Of Wolves (1984)
White Dog (1982)

TheWickerFan 01-29-2011 01:47 AM

Thank you Roshiq. I forgot to make note of Stagefright.:(

Yeah, I second all the remarks mentioned above regarding 'The 'Burbs'. I would say it was made in the same spirit as Beetlejuice and Haunted Honeymoon - spooky comedy.

Elvis_Christ 01-30-2011 02:16 PM

Stagefright gets a thumbs up from me.

ChronoGrl 01-30-2011 02:53 PM

You've never seen The 'burbs? Oh, it's so so so soooooooooo good!! Utter blast.

I saw Night Of The Comet around the time it was released, so I don't remember it too well. Is that the valley girl 'I Am Legend'?

Yes, I remember now.

"Rumors of my death were, like, totally exaggerated".

Yeah, the best here in my opinion is Stagefright and The Hidden.

Has anyone seen "The Church" its the only film by Dario Argento I haven't yet seen. Plus Michele Soavi's "La Setta"?And while I'm at it "Frightmare" and "House Of Mortal Sin"?

People who like "Night Of The Comet" may also like "Night Of The Creeps", "Student Bodies" and "Cutting Class"

"

Argento was only a writer on it...

Frightmare is excellent and House Of Mortal Sin is pretty good. I lov e Pete Walker stuff. The confessional murders are great too.

I didn't care for Night of the Creeps, but Student Bodies was pretty amusing. I'll have to check out Cutting Class.

A few of my 80's favorites:

Shocker (1989)
Deadly Friend (1986)
TerrorVision (1986)
Videodrome (1983)
The Monster Squad (1987)
House (1986)
House II: The Second Story (1987)
Waxwork (1988)

swiss tony 02-21-2011 02:24 PM

Good shout with Videodrome.

Farewell to the flesh!

Fearonsarms 02-22-2011 11:25 PM

R'yleh ale-I'll check out the pete walker stuff several people have said good things about them.

I think "Night Of The Creeps" and "The Monster Squad" have sentimental value to me cos I was very young seeing them and I still laughed watching them recently.

Oh and good to see a shout out for "Shocker" :)

My SN is Ferox13 - R'yleh ale is just my tipple of choice ;-)

Start with House of Mortal Sin or Frighmare for Pete Walker.

I also like his non horror like Cool it Carol (I'm a big Robin Askwith fan) and The Big Switch ..

Fearonsarms 02-24-2011 08:12 PM

Ferox13 Sorry I knew that I just love typing in "R'yleh ale" I think its great :)
