Best "Ripper" films?
I'm an amateur "ripperologist" -- student of the history of Jack the Ripper -- and would like to find the best films on that subject. They don't have to be necessarily historically accurate, just entertaining.
Thus far, the Hughes' brothers "From Hell" is the best I've seen, nicely frightening, with the actual Ripper murder scenes reproduced as accurately as possible. Good acting, good production values, etc. make it the best Ripper film I've seen. The worst was this movie about the London Bridge having been relocated to Lake Havasu City in Arizona, and the Ripper's spirit or ghost or whatever was also transported and he's rampaging the town there. It's been on cable twice and I was unable to watch the movie all the way. Of course the funniest is the scene from "Amazon Women on the Moon" where we learn that Jack the Ripper was actually the Loch Ness monster! What Ripper films would you recommend, and which have been awful? |

Good call on Time after Time...
I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan - so i like A study in Terror and Murder by Decree. Other films: Edge of Sanity (a personal fave of mine) Hands of the Ripper The Lodger (he was also the killer in Pandora's Box) There was an episode of The Veil too.. |

I liked Jack the Ripper with Michael Caine, it was made for tv, great movie thought.

For a couple Holmes/Ripper movies try these:
"Murder By Decree" "A Study In Terror" |

The Michael Caine Ripper movie is great in my opinion but the Johny Depp flic was awful, but thats my view.

I was wondering what that Michael Caine flick would be like. The cover it has over here made it look totally shit ("Shouldn't judge a book by it's cover" yeh yeh I know) and I just forgot about it. Might give it a look sometime.

I've seen "From Hell" and that's about it out of what you guys have mentioned...I thought that was a pretty solidly made film, though I'm not really too interested in the subject matter I guess...
Now, for all I know this COULD be a completely shitty suggestion but I remember seeing it at random on late night TV when I was about 12-13 and being pretty enthralled. A movie set in the (then) modern day, starring James Spader called "Jacks Back" - I can't remember EXACTLY what it was about though I seem to recall a diary being found, something to do with twins and potential descendant/s of the ripper...obviously it's a little offbeat compared to some of these films and maybe more at home next to the HG Wells one, but yeah now that I've thought about it, I wouldn't mind seeing it again. I thought I'd mention it in the event that any of the enthusiasts had not seen it, at very least at the time I saw it I found it an interesting spin on the idea. |
Totally forgot about Jack's Back. I remember really liking that when I saw it years ago. It's weird I've never run into a tape of it since. Think I'll grab a "backup copy" of it this week :D

Well if you find one, let me know - I couldn't.
