The Troll Hunter

Universal captures 'Troll Hunter'

UPI nabs rights in several major territories

LONDON -- Universal Pictures International has secured multi-territory European distribution rights for Norwegian pic "The Troll Hunter."

UPI will distribute the CGI fantasy monster pic in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia (including CIS and Baltics), Austria, Switzerland and Benelux.

Magnolia Pictures' genre arm, Magnet Releasing, will distribute the pic in the U.S. in 2011 after having snapped up world rights for the pic (excluding Europe) following its secret screening at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.

Svensk Filmindustri will release the film in Norway on Oct. 29.

UPI's worldwide acquisitions manager Negeen Yazdi and director of European creative J.J. Lousberg brokered the deal with shingle Filmkameratene's John M. Jacobsen.

Pic marks the debut feature of commercials director Andre Ovredal and stars Norwegian comic Otto Jespersen. Filmkameratene's Jacobsen and Sveinung Golimo are producers.

Story follows a group of Norwegian film students who embark on a journey to catch real-life trolls on camera that the government has been keeping under wraps for years.

UPI prexy of international production and acquisitions Christian Grass said the pic "has the potential to redefine the (fantasy) genre and take it to the next level."

Pic's trailer became a viral Internet sensation, following the footsteps of verite-style pics like "Cloverfield" and "Paranormal Activity."

Looks ace.. I'm a suckah for films like these. Big monster films are great :)

This film looks amazing. Has anyone seen it?

BookZombie 02-20-2011 02:15 AM

The film is more Blir Witch Project in my opinion than Cloverfield, but it is quite good, at times the acting is a little lacking, but all in all this is a great movie and it is fun to see Norwegian filmmakers turning to our own rich folklore for creatures to make movies about.

Excellent film - great to see a serious modern approach to Scandinavian Legends. The effects were pretty good especially considering the budget..

That sounds REALLY good

I would by the way recommend that if The Troll Hunter is published in USA with a dub that you watch it with subtitles as I think the actors voices with with the movie very well and I do not think it would be the same to watch it with a dub.

I've heard really good things about this and am very excited to see it.

FINALLY got to see this and I loved it - Incredibly clever and well done. Like Ferox said, I like how it takes the local Scandinavian legends here... If you know anything about trolls, you'll get the humor especially. The special effects were great, too.

Do you have Comcast? It's currently On Demand... You have to pay for it, but the $5 or so is cheaper than a movie night out with hubbie. :-D

No, I don't have anything like that. Unless I'm willing to buy the DVD when it comes out, I'll probably have a long wait.:(

I've got a copy of this but still haven't got round to throwing it on.

I'll get round to them one day!

Watched this myself a few weeks back, lots of fun and really well made....To take traditional fairytale trolls and place them in what I would consider to be a modern horror environment and make it work is a great example of how you dont always need to fall back on blood soaked vampires or more obvious horror villains to make quality horror.

wtb2612 05-30-2011 08:47 AM

I watched this a few weeks ago. It's a fun movie with great visuals.

The plot is complete nonsense, but it kind of doesn't matter with this movie.

Siemelle 08-25-2014 07:46 PM

This is probably one of the best found footage style movies I have ever watched. It's very captivating in its approach and I loved that is was centered on a creature that doesn't get too much love in the genre.
