Ethernet Cable Help

I usually connect to the internet using a wireless adapter but lately I'm getting fed up of how up and down the signal can go. I tried to plug the ethernet cable I use to connect to Xbox Live into the ethernet port on the back of my PC but nothing. Nothing has shown up on the computer to suggest it sees it apart from a small yellow light next to the port. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Could be that the modem you're using is set to be configured with only wired or wireless connection, not both? So go to the webpage of the modem where you can make changes etc, and see if that's the case.
There is also sometimes a universal reset button on the modem like in a pinhole type thing, do that with the cable in and it might pick it up?
The cable currently works on other devices I take it?

...that's my help...

Yeah, the cable works absolutely fine with my Xbox and my sister (who's bedroom is closer to the router) has a wired connection which works fine as well.

Well if his sisters computer is getting online then the DHCP is enabled on the router. (or do you mean hes set up a static Ip on his computer?)

I'm guessing its this lan card too..

Ok that suggests that your router/modem is detecting your PC so i'd prolly start looking on your PC..

Goto Network connections (in control panel) there should be an icon for Local Area connection.

Is this greyed out? If so then right click and hit enable.

If its not then right click on it and hit properties - then go to TCP/IP and hit properties again..

Does it look like this:

I had my computer guy from down the road take a look at it. Apparently the computer knows it's there, it knows it's meant to connect to the internet but for whatever reason it wasn't showing up on the network connections. He tried uninstalling it but on attempting to reinstall we discovered a disc was needed. Not owning the disc anymore he's going to have to come round and do it online. Should be fine soon...

Are you talking about the network card? (is it a desktop).

You shouldn't need a disk for that.

the fact he can connect through the wireless and x-box pointed to the router was fine.

the light shows an active connection, so the card is physically connected

is anything showing up in the network connections (wireless should appear there to). if not, then possible issue with network connections service.

right click on my computer and select manage. in the computer management screen, open system tools and select device manager. there should be a section for network adapters, is the card there? does it have an exclamation mark on it? if it's not there, do you have any devices appearing in the other devices section?

if it was installed before, then the driver should already be there in the windows\system32\drivers folder (assuming you are running at least xp)

driver missing per chance.

I meant another disk besides Windows - i've never needed a 3rd party disk to install a NIC.

windows contains drivers for some devices, but new ones usually aren't included.

windows 7 found all my hardware for my laptop except for graphics.

It won't have the drivers for your Graphics card as there is so many types (same goes for sound cards) but it should be able to get a nic card working..

just because a network card is ndis complaint doesn't mean windows has drivers for it, same as other devices. there are plenty of manufacturers of network cards.

ferretchucker 06-26-2010 01:14 PM

Yep, it's in the devices section, complete with the exclamation mark. But no, for whatever reason it's not in the network connections bit, although the wireless is.

Ferox13 06-26-2010 01:23 PM

I'm sure you're right for some cards but I've never had to install drivers for a NIC card.

Ferox13 06-26-2010 01:28 PM

Anyway some thing like Driver detective or AIDA32 will show all the componants in your PC and then you can find the drivers...DD will actually give u links for them (great service)
