What Happened To The Movies?
 

I want to know what happened to the horror movies ? call me old or behind the times,but i just watched the new nightmare on elm street,and... well all i can say is boo!hiss! boo! i watched the original and Freddy was not a pedophile,he was a child murder,they jumped and reached way out of the original story and made it something not nightmarish just to reality based (certainly not why i go to a movie theater).the idea is to prey on the fantastical horror things that could never happen but scare you anyway.the masters of horror Stephen King ,Clive Barker,Wes Craven,John Carpenter,Romero.now these guys knew how to take you to a point of sheer horror slowly boiling your scenes before scaring the snot out of you. they could take a glance a smile and make you wish you really could run from the theater screaming.and adding a sick humor that opened your brain and twisted it ,without the shock and awe that the current junk seems to dole out all up front .There's nothing left to the imagination,and any good horror writer or film maker knows its the things you don't see happening that scare you the most because our imaginations are the best of our fright centers.can someone please explain what happened. I'm sad that the new movies are soooo not so scary.:eek:

I'm sorry to say this post seems a bit over zealous, because I've never really felt the need to actually scream or yell while watching an older horror movie (unless I was yelling AT it). The thing is there are HUNDRED upon HUNDRED of horror movies made in the last decade, and I can't stress it enough when I say that a couple of remakes does not define an entire decade. Nothing happened besides the patience of the audience in question.

By the by, a lot of the directors you listed have been known to actually show the action. The thing is, you need to realize that there is a distinct difference between what is being produced in hollywood compared to everywhere else in the united states or even in the world. I have made this point in several cases...if you look, you might find something you like.

Indeed, there are interesting and un-typical horror movies being made, as well as there are typical, by the numbers, uncreative horror movies being made.
You can say the same about romantic comedies, action movies, dramas, family movies, whatever.
Look beyond the local multi-plex surface.

Absolutely, this can't be stressed enough. There are many web-sites (including this one) that can guide you toward the hidden gems.

What can I say that hasn't been already here...
Get a little less mainstream with the horror - if anything this is the one genre where this is most vital. Sure, some MS horror is ok, but generally it's bottom of the barrel forgettable stuff these days.
At the (you call them) multiplex, you get crowds, popcorn, and popcorn. ;)
Though if you want to increase your odds of seeing better horror, your best best is to step back in time and check out what's there already. Be selective on the new stuff, the extra effort will ay off and have you feeling not quite so disillusioned.

I like Chinese sword fighting films. Not the wacky ones, where they jump 100 feet in the air. but the more realistic ones.

and do you like Young Einstein?

The local universities have always been a good source to find and watch good movies. A bunch of friends used to watch anime at UWO every Saturday, (4 movies for $2 is tough to beat) and UWFV where I now attend just hosted an indie fest for local producers, there were some amazing short films there ($8 for an all day event).

So yeah, if you want different, you just have to go to where different is. And keep reading, HDC members always share when we find a good one.

Anyway found reelhd.com - got lots of interesting indie-horrors.
It`s a pay site, but they throw in 5 days where you can watch for free.
Now i gotta spend 5 days watching cheesy horrors just to get a value out of the free trial :D

That's too bad you can't get NetFlix. I didn't think I'd like it, don't know why. Then someone sent me a free trial and I've been hooked ever since. And I love the fact that they're kicking Blockbusters ass, lol.
I won't say all Blockbusters suck, but the one by us sure does.

Been a Netflix customer for around 2 years now, 0 complaints, they even send extra movies every now and then for free. The Blockbuster by us just had there 'going out of business' sale-Family Video is still doing well.

I missed our BlockBusters going out sale. I was pissed. I heard some good deals were to be had.

On topic, I don't see new horror in theaters. I don't have a job atm and I can't afford to spend the bucks for a family outing to the theaters, but more than that, even if I could afford it I'm tired of being disappointed by new horror.

I'll rent them and make my choice. But, I agree with what's been said. This place is full of people who like good horror, and their recommendations are spot on from what I've checked out so far.
Sucks being out money when a movie sucks, especially with theater prices. Cool to post somewhere that people just want good horror, and can point you(or me) in the right direction to get it.

To be fair fuck all of the older horror movies actually scared me either.

Endo doesn't agree but Paranormal Activity put the shits up me and tripped me out.

I thought Pontypool had a creepy atomosphere too as did The House Of The Devil.

Those three came out in the last year or so I don't get what the dude who started the thread is on about.

:) Nice to not get bashed for once on the Paranormal Activity thing, lol. Neither here nor there,but I don't know what the movie lacked for me. Just didn't do it.

I saw an indie film called Somebody Help Me, and that disturbed me, in a good way!! I loved this flick. The guy is pulling teeth out and fingernails, and we had to stop it a few times to just gather ourselves.
That's what I like. If you're going to torture, take it to the point that I have to stop for a bit.

I've recommended this film to friends, and they didn't like it. Maybe it's me that's skewed, lol.

Referring to the op, Freddy's pedophilia was definitely implied in the original series, and if you want quality horror, you need to view the foreign section, that is, anything but American horror. The best recent American horror film I've seen was Quarantine, and that's a shot for shot remake of [REC].

I think The House of the Devil is highly overrated online. Aside from the nice cinematography and Tom Noonan, it was an amateur movie.

Actually, the pedophilia was never implied in Nightmare on Elm Street. The whole point was that he was just a child murderer (hence the claws) and if anything, it would only be implied, because saying it out right kills the atmosphere that Freddy creates.

Now as far as your opinion on American horror, I would strongly disagree with you. If you dig below the surface, there are some real gems that stand out in the movie world, American horror isn't just the jump filled teen killing conglomerate that it seems to be painted as now-a-days. Many independent films are trying to break the mold and bring something new to the horror world, but unfortunately they are constantly looked over, because of the gigantic "remake" movement thats going on right now.

That's not implying pedophilia (which is technically 12 and younger, but that is besides the point) that is just Freddy's sense of humor, it was never implied that he had sex with any of the children he killed.

Well that all depends on what ones you have seen. Though I can almost certainly say that there are probably a lot more Indy films out there than you think. Now I don't mean to start a fight or anything, but I feel it is unfair to say that there is no Merit in American films.

I didn't say there's no merit in American films. I'm saying that America is currently lagging behind the other major horror producing countries.
