Some Underrated Films

Just thought I'd mention some good films that often get overlooked:

The Stendhal Syndrome (1996)
Acacia (2003)
Motel Hell (1980)
Arachnophobia (1990)
Of Unknown Origin (1983)
Puppet Master (1989)
Who Can Kill A Child? (1976)
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)
Lair Of The White Worm (1988)
Mute Witness (1994)
Stir Of Echoes (1999)
Final Destination (2000)
Sisters (1973)
The Cell (2000)
Ghostwatch (1992) (U.K. TV movie)
Children Of The Stones (1977) (U.K. mini-series)
The Kingdom (1994) (Danish mini-series)

I hate the Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake. Whereas the last shot of the original is a masterpiece of ambiguity, the last shot of the remake spells everything out explicitly and nothing is left in question.

I also think Puppet Master is a stupid little film.

My favorites from that list are Motel Hell, Arachnaphobia, Lair of the White Worm and Stir of Echoes- though I think Stir is pretty well regarded, overall.

TheWickerFan 05-17-2010 06:23 AM

You're right, Puppet Master really is a stupid little film, but I really liked those creepy puppets.

I thought Stir Of Echoes kind of got ignored because it was released too close on the heels of The Sixth Sense.

The original Invasion Of The Body Snatchers would definitely be in my Top Ten Best Movies Ever list.

Bastet 05-17-2010 10:21 AM

Arachnophobia is great- its one of he only films I can watch with my son and a clear conscience.
Stir of Echo's I only bought by accident as I was after something to watch at work in the wee small hours and there was an ex-rental in our local shop for £2. I as really pleased with it and found it quite unerving and well acted. Genuinely frightened me the first time I watched it.
Also, the first Final destinationwas a fresh idea and good story, but I think it has been tainted by too many sequals.

Some more:

Misery (1990)
Duel (1971)
Signs (2002)
Open Water (2003)
The Stepford Wives (1975)
Wolf Creek (2005)
Cabin Fever (2002)
Phantasm (1979)
Thirst (1979)
Tourist Trap (1979)
The Gate (1987)
The Entity (1981)

neverending 05-19-2010 06:05 PM

Haha- The Gate is infamous here.

Are Misery & Duel underrated? Duel is pretty highly regarded as far as I remember.

Doc Faustus 05-19-2010 06:23 PM

I'd like to add:
Eaten Alive
The Bloodsplattered Bride
The Funhouse
Kidnapped
The Seventh Victim (in the context of Lewton's oeuvre, it's underrated)
Nightmare Alley (virtually forgotten)
Doctor X
New York Ripper
Freddy vs. Jason
Savage Weekend

ChronoGrl 05-19-2010 06:58 PM

I haven't heard of any of those. You're making them up.

Doc Faustus 05-19-2010 07:01 PM

Some of them are sort of mainstream but the majority of them don't earn the praise they deserve and do not have the place in canon they should.

ChronoGrl 05-19-2010 07:09 PM

blah blah blah blah makin up stuff blah blah blah blah

...

Ok. I'm really punchy right now. I didn't want you to take me seriously. I ASSUME that they exist because you aren't a crazy person. Just trying to... to... *kicks pebble* :(

Yeah, I didn't feel right about putting Misery, Duel, and Phantasm on the list as underrated, but I was strictly looking at my Horror Movie Countdown research and those movies came up.

What is the general opinion of The Gate? Something tells me I need to make a list of movies I'm ashamed to admit I liked.

penley chase ghost 05-20-2010 02:55 AM

underated !

i sell the dead: humor, zombies and aliens ?

AMICUS HORROR 05-20-2010 03:36 AM

Damien Omen II is often underrated, I thought it was the best of the Omen films and very scary. The women in the red jacket bouncing of the lorry was so cool. And the doctor in the lift being cut in two was so awesome.

I thought that The Gate was an absolute blast... Same with Phantasm, though I believe it's a cult favorite...

I'm glad someone else likes The Gate. I suppose a lot of people thought it was too tame, but it had some good scares. Rated PG-13 and starring a very young Stephen Dorff, I would recommend the film to younger people as a starter horror film.

Love The Entity, Misery is excellent, Wolf Creek I really enjoyed. Glad you have The Stepford Wives (original, remake was rubbish), on here- Same writer (Ira Levin) as the brilliant Rosemary's Baby.

Did think Cabin Fever was pretty formulaic though

Scanners II: Quality low budget sequel, often overlooked or unfairly compared to the original.

The Video Dead: The fact that this quirky zombie flick is yet to have a DvD release is all the evidence needed to qualify it as underrated, in my book.

The Sentinel: Lost amongst the 70's classics or remembered as the movie that used deformed actors instead of make-up. Extremly well shot, dark, disturbing atmosphere filled with quality horror imagery.

The Exorcist III: Regarded as an underrated horror so maybe it's not all that underrated, but still deserves a mention. Some quality scenes that stack up well against many higher regarded horror films out there.

Doc Faustus 05-20-2010 05:30 PM

Quite agree in regards to The Sentinel. I like it better than Rosemary's Baby by a longshot.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 05-20-2010 08:15 PM

the sentinel is one of my favorite horrors actually.

I find pet semetary a little underrated. And of the more recent films i think
drag me to hell, i sell the dead, the descent & the seventh moon has gone under the radar for most people.
