The Rolling Stones were great when they were an R&B band and up to Sticky Fingers. I wouldn't call them overrated at all. They are average as fuck nowdays but that old stuff kills.

True, I do love some old stones, maybe replace them with KISS on the overrated bands list.

I love Led Zeppelin, but I would have to say they wrote the most overrated rock song ever: Stairway To Heaven. Also, Led Zeppelin should stop being classified as Heavy Metal (they are not the same as Black Sabbath or Metallica). The same could be said for Kiss (sorry boys, but you're dangerously close to being a Glam Rock band).

Anyway, my answer to the original question would be: Stinkfist - Tool (I love metal, but this group leaves me cold).

Kiss were awesome back in the start too. I've got a beaten up record of Alive that I listen to all the time. But yeh they've been flogging a dead horse for 20 years or something. I see Ace Freely got fired and it's basically Gene Simmons and that cat guy now days hahaha :D

Sabbath were definitely metal. Sure its tame by today's standards but that shit pioneered Doom Metal (or Stoner whatever you choose to call it) anyways. They were a lot darker than anyone round that time, shit must have totally fucked with peoples heads.

Sabbath didn't really "fuck with" our heads- we just dug it because it was different, and it was real. There wasn't the fractionated music scene there is today- punk, metal, emo, whatever- it didn't exist- it was rock, and that was it. If it was original and true, we liked it. Sabbath was different from anything else around, and you could tell they meant what they said.

I was never a fan of Kiss because it all seemed like artifice to me- it was more about the show than the music.

Led Zeppelin also stole most of their hits from other bands.

They have more of a blues sound to me, but still metal, not heavy per-say.

If you mean they re-made old songs, that would add up to about 1/15 of all their material. If you mean something else, please give examples.

Yes, Kiss always seemed glitz and glamour without substance to me. Trying to be more than the sum of their parts. Sabbath were so much more gritty and down to earth. Still love them to this day. I believe that without them, we wouldn't have some of the music we have now. Or even some of the music of the 80's- my love!
Whitesnake were a little tiny bit later, but all bravado compared to AC/DC. I just hope the latter isn't selling out as a result of their being discovered by a new generation.. I was tempted to buy the soundtrack to Iron Man 2 until I realised I already have most of the music on other albums.

I'll be damned; I had no idea Stairway To Heaven was ripped off. I had a feeling Dazed And Confused was someone else's, but they never gave Jake Holmes credit. They gave Willie Dixon credit for You Shook Me and I Can't Quit You Baby, but I see they didn't give Robert Johnson any credit for The Lemon Song. Did they give credit to Robert Johnson for Travelling Riverside Blues?
If you have any more examples of Led Zeppelin ripping other artists off, I'd love to hear them.

Oh course Kiss were glitz and glamour they were a really good pop band. Fuck if I was a kid back then they'd be my favorite thing in the world. They never tried to be about anything else but overblown good fun and making HEAPS of money. But yeh like I said they just run out of steam.

Definitely on the first two albums but Master of Reality is all metal IMO.

How about hating on the generic rock out there today instead of bands that broke the mold? Bands like Nickelback, Linkin Park, Puddle of Mudd, Creed, etc... Those bands literally have nothing to offer the music world except recycled riffs and generic lyrics. They bring nothing new to the table at all.

Read closer. What they did was introduce a new sub-genre of music to the mainstream. Of course there was punk before Green Day and the mid 90s :rolleyes:, it just wasn't mainstream until they came along.

Nah I'd disagree Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags, Bad Religion (plus a bunch of late 80s Hardcore) had already enjoyed success within the mainstream music scene.
Punk's always dipped in and out of the mainstream look at The Clash or Sex Pistols you don't much more mainstream recognition than that.

I don't really consider any of those bands to be mainstream at all. I guess by mainstream, I'm thinking pop. The Clash is probably the closest of those you named. But none were ever in the mainstream like Green Day. Dookie was freakin' huge. It sold like 11 million copies. London Calling sold around 2million.

I think Nirvana are more responsible so the trend you're talking about. Green Day were basically signed along with a lot of bands to be the "next Nirvana".

Not "mainstream" soundwise I was just getting at how they got real popular during the late 80s and heaps of people were listening to them. They broke thru to the mainstream was what I was meaning.

Nirvana changed the face of rock for sure. I'm sure every record label that signed any band after Nirvana was hoping they just signed the next Nirvana, but that's like saying the guy who signed Nirvana was just hoping he was signing the next Beatles or Michael Jackson. I get what you are saying, but think it's a very loose and vague interpretation.

I guess I feel like certain musicians and bands should have earned the respect of anyone calling themselves music lovers without taking their personal opinion of the band's music in to account. I think Green Day has worked their way in to that category over the past 2 decades and you disagree with my opinion. *shrug* That's cool.
