Great list zwoti. i'd add Death Bell, Black House (pretty brutal), Epitaph, Joint Security Area, and Spider Forest. i second anything by Ki-duk Kim (The Isle and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring were amazing). Ashe.

Thirst by Park Chan-wook is a good one. Check it out if you haven't already.
I second the recs of the Whispering Corridors series. All three - Whispering Corridors, Memento Mori and Wishing Stairs are pretty solid. Besides those listed by Z... Sisily 2km Bloody Reunion Bloody Beach Voice Voices Dead Friend Antarctic Journal The Legend of Evil Lake My Bloody Roommates Epitaph Black House Hidden Floor Nightmare G P 506 The Wig 301/302 The Uninvited Cinderella Arang Witch Board Bunshinsaba The Soul Guardians |
Taiwan - Silk, Double Vision, The Heirloom.
Philippines - Blood Island series (like Z pointed out...our very own Crabapple is a big fan of these flicks), Yam Laranas' Sigaw (aka) The Echo. Also dig up some other works of Eddie Romero if you can. Indonesia - Mystics in Bali is one which will hit you like a real sucker punch. Lady Terminator is another. Thailand - Faet (aka) Alone, Sick Nurses, Art of the Devil I & II, Nang Nak, Sars Wars, Re-Cycle, The Eye flicks, Buppah Rahtree, Dorm, Ghost of Mae Nak. Not sure about any stuff from Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam. Thailand and Philippines are where all horror is at in South-east Asia. I take it nobody has seen much of Indian horror. Trust me, there's a lot more to it than Bhoot. Early 80s stuff is very cheesy, but its pretty dark, gothic and atmospheric. Borrows a lot from Hammer. http://www.amazon.com/Bollywood-Horr...8737840&sr=8-2 http://www.amazon.com/Bollywood-Horr...8737840&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Bollywood-Horr...8737840&sr=8-3 See if you can get those. |
Vietnam - Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait; released in 2007...collaboration with South Korea. It became the first horror and also first rated film in Vietnam.
About Indian Horror films: I have seen some Ramsay Brothers' Horror films but that was quite a long time ago. Purana Mandir, Bis saal baad, Daak Bangla & Purana Haveli used to be the favorites of mine:). Anyway, lately again bought a 6 in 1 dvd of Indian Horror films of 80's. Darna Mana Hai (2003) - Among the recent horror films, I liked Darna mana hai quite a lot besides Bhoot. It's a fascinating horror anthology with 6 different horror/supernatural tales. Really impressive; but later they made a sequel (Darna Jaruri hai) which is bit disappointing. Hawa (2003) - Really enjoyed it first time. Then I had no idea that it's actually inspired by The Entity (1981). This year's 13B also a good one. |

asian horror ?
Hi i was wondering what people thought were the best 5 asian horror movies of SE asia i,e thailand and eastern asian such as korea and japan.
Thank you |
Ito Junji and his works
Ive read ALOT of manga, but none better then the freaky horror of Ito Junji, Ive read the manga and seen the movie uzumaki (the spiral) in my opinion and many others a flawless horror piece, the movie isn't as good as most are but but had plenty of the creepy scares Ito Junji provides. Recently i read the entire manga series of Tomie, and have seen up to Tomie: Forbidden fruit which im only 1/4 through but enjoy already but can't judge yet. Tomie (except the first movie which is just decent) is a series of genius which only as usual Ito Junji can provide. Its basically almost like a Japanese version of the re-animator, involving a girl who ensnares men making them obsessed with her, often as far to killing her. But rather then zombies and such )to be honest i haven't seen re-animator) its just Tomie, but often more then one, you see shes more supernatural, pretty much the embodiment of lust, when she is kill she revives, when chopped up, each piece becomes a new Tomie, the more shes chopped up the slower it is but it will happen and chaos will always ensue. I gotta say i LOVE the entire series manga and movies so far, id also like to discus it with other horror fans, J-horror or otherwise. If not Tomie anything by that genius Ito Junji.
