top ten non-Asian modern foreign horror

Haven't seen nor could find a non-Asian top ten list of modern foreign horror, and since i am on the hunt for some good foreign horror, might as well create my list of my own. In no particular order, they are:

Brotherhood of the Wolf(2001)
The Devil's Backbone (2001)
Frontiers (2007)
Irreversible (2002) [not really horror but it still qualified]
Let the Right One In (2008) [probably the best of the lot]
Man Bites Dog (1992)
Shaun of the Dead (2004) [not sure if this qualifies as a foreign flick???]
Them/Ils (2007)
Wolf Creek (2005) [Again, barely a foreign film]
[REC] (2007) [probably the scariest of the lot]

As this list is decent at best, let see some more so that i may update this rather woeful list. Thanks.

If we're including Aussie films (as you did) I'd have to put Out of the Blue (came out last year) on the list. Really recommend that.

I'd include every film I've seen from your list- Let the Right One In, Frontier(s) (which has an amazing song at the end- I tracked the artist down on Myspace and found where to buy it. It's in the Halloween playlist, of course), The Devil's Backbone, Wolf Creek...

I know I've seen some others, but it's too late to think right now.

Oh, Haute Tension as well.

If Shaun's in, then 28 Days Later stakes a claim too. The Orphanage is another which I ll strongly recommend. I d say Pan's Labyrinth too but the general opinion around these parts is that its more a fantasy tale than horror.

Then there's Nightwatch (Nochnoy dozor), Funny Games and Inside.

Let the right one In
The Devil's Backbone
The Orphanage
[REC.]
Nightwatch
Inside
Frontier(s)
Eden Lake
Shaun of the Dead
28 days later

Honorable mentions:
Them (Ils)
28 weeks later
Timecrimes
Wolf Creek
Brotherhood of the Wolf

I need to see this one asap.

It really creates true suspense by showing how real people are affected by terrible circumstances. It's "based on a true story" - but not in that phony Hollywood way. I was really impressed.

It's pretty acurate to the actual events. That all went down just outta town where I live. The place still has a errie feel to it.

neverending 10-04-2009 12:09 AM

Yah, it comes off as totally real- and that's what makes it so terrifying.

And my apologies- it's a New Zealand film, not Aussie.

Elvis_Christ 10-04-2009 12:31 AM

All good man most people think a lot NZ films are Aussie ones :)

Bad Blood is worth checking out too if you haven't seen it. It's based on another NZ mass murder and is one of my favorite flicks to come out of this country.

I don't know if I have a top ten but there lots of good recs here. I'll try and add a few that aren't on anybody's list, like Otesánek (Little Otik). It's a bizzare little film but I really had fun with it. If you included a 92' film, 88' shouldn't be far off but I'm sure you've seen Spoorloos already right? Evil (2007) was an alright Greek zombie flick, the gore is good and the ending is great. Also check out Delicatessen, Accion Mutante, and Fear(s) of the Dark (animated).

Ah, some good stuff here. i forgot a few and may just have to adjust my list (Haute Tension was somehow overlooked). Spoorloos, Funny Games, Inside- all bumped up on the que. Delicatessen was awesome, but i have a hard time calling it horror. Accion Mutante does not seem to available on Netflix. Bummer. i will check out Bad Blood, Otesanek, Evil, Fear(s) of the Dark, and Out of the Blue as well. The Orphanage might get reconsidered, and Nightwatch and Time Crimes were all on the short list. i actually loved Nightwatch, but for some reason it did not seem like horror. It definitely needs to be reconsidered. As a side note, i love how nobody here mentioned Martyrs. Thanks for all the great recs. Ashe.

Dead Snow came from Norway this year, and it was FANTASTIC.

LocoZombie 10-08-2009 07:21 PM

Wow, there was allot I didn't know about, thanks guys.
Also some good ones are In My Skin, and if you like occult type stuff, check out Malefique. Calvaire was good too, imo.
Oh and I have to mention Singapore Sling for the sickos, it doesn't cross the line or anything, but it is a bit twisted ...and artsy fartsy, good for lazy Sunday afternoons I guess. :)

You guys gave me a list of movies to look fer. ;)

Amazing film for sure, not sure if I'd classify as a horror film though.

Have you not seen Inside yet, or did you just not care for it?

...

For me:

Inside
Devil's Backbone
[REC]
Out of the Blue
Let the Right One In
Shaun of the Dead
Dog Soldiers
Ils
Dead Alive
28 Weeks Later

Honorable Mentions:
Frostbiten - a cute little vampire movie that felt like a fun 80s high school party flick. It's not AMAZING, but I recommend it.
The Cabin
Wolf Creek
Severance
Funny Games
The Orphanage
Backwoods

Delicatessen was mentioned, but I don't put that in the "Horror" genre... If I did, it would definitely be in my top 10 though. Definitely overlooked.

I'll have to think some more and come back to this...

...

Looking at the above, that shows me that I need to see more foreign horror, and not just Asian horror.

I'm excited for this thread to grow and take recommendations.

Just haven't gotten to it; bumping it up as we speak. My Netflix cue is huge (always maxed out) and i cannot keep myself from rearranging it with obsessive abandon. Ashe.
