I just watched A L'Interieur
 

Hey guys was wondering if you could rec a new user some good modern horror? Yeah like thread title says I just watched A L'Interieur (Inside) and loved it. I think it's become abundantly clear that I'm now officially completely desensitized to graphic gore and violence on the big screen (and little screen respectively!)

The only other fairly modern film I've watched that was as graphic and bold as Inside was High Tension (Haute Tention - another French one) which I thought was awesome with a great twist at the end.

Any similar films to those two that I should check out?

Try Martyrs another french film - its pretty graphic and hard hitting.

I like Frontiere(s) alot too but it seemed to get a mixed reation from other Horror fans. Its kinda like a French version of an American Gothic film (think disfuctional, murdering Chainsaw type family).

Ils (Them), another fantastic French horror films.

You might also like Eden Lake, though I wasn't a huge fan.

Yeah I've seen Eden Lake once and I'm not sure if I want to watch it ever again because it didn't really do much for me the first time around. Even for a horror film I found it to be in bad taste. Thanks I'll check that other one out though.

Yeah, I was disappointed with Eden Lake. People tend to like it who liked Inside, though, so I figured it was worth a mention.

You might want to try The Signal. The first part of it is absolutely raw and brutal, but then the rest of the movie blends absurd comedy into it. It's not a pure outright raw film in its entirety but the first part is brutal and it's an excellent film overall (just wanted to warn you about the comedy - it's fantastic, but I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for).

GOD that movie was so funny.

I was also disappointed with Eden Lake. I didn't like the ending at all, and plus, it just annoyed me how the characters reacted to the situation.
The Signal was great!


I loved Inside, didn't like High Tension much at all (had such potential, but I hated the ending, it just ruined it for me).
I loved Them, so I definitely second that recommendation.

I liked them both a lot as well. Though Martyrs was not what I was expecting.

It's almost freakly how like-minded we are... The two characters in Eden Lake PISSED ME OFF.

I'm sorry, but regardless how old a group of people (or children are), if they're fucking with me on my vacation, I WILL JUST LEAVE. After the tires were popped, I would have been like. Uhm, yeah, let's get the hell out of here. Not worth it. And going in their home to begin with was just DUMB (to the point where I wouldn't have felt bad if the guy got axed right then and there) - It really only served as a device so that we'd "recognize" the house later on... Which was what made the ending so damn predictable. Overall a painful movie to watch.

You are practically the ONLY ONE (besides me and my boyfriend) who feels that way about High Tension. I think it's INCREDIBLY overrated. The ending was absolutely awful. Considering how well-done the movie was, I don't think that it needed a "twist." I would have been satisfied with a straight up sadistic slasher film. Honestly.

I've made my extreme hatred of HIGH TENSION quite clear on ths site. The ending invalidates the film, nothing you saw happened or could have happened... it's a cheap cheat.

That said, I liked EDEN LAKE and I would not have taken any shit from a bunch of kids, I certainly wouldn't let them force me to move my vacation spot. I particularly liked the ending as it was the logical conclusion.

Loved INSIDE, liked MARTYRS, didn't really care for FRONTEIR(S). I though ILS (THEY) was way overrated and boring.

I'd say [REC] or might turn you on. MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN was overlooked by many and I really liked it - not genius, but quite fun. ANTICHRIST is going to upset a lot of you, but I'm quite pleased with it.

Midnight Meat Train was great can't wait for to see The Antichrist hoping to catch it on the big screen over the next week or so because it's playing at a film festival over here.

I loved Eden Lake - sure it has a lot of flaws but Chavs as the villians in a Brit Horror film is great. THe illogical main characters were a bit off putting though I would hessitate to say that most people wouldn't be intimidated by those bunch of kids. Its a kinda lose/lose situation - you back down and look like a coward or you stand up and go to court for assault on a minor.....

Another great recent Brit horror film is MUM & DAD - its an English version of the American Gothic horror but this time the Murderous disfuctional family live in the English 'Burbs.

I keep forgetting to check out Mum & Dad seems to be a flick people either love or hate. The real life case sounds twisted as fuck.

I don't know about that; I like to be surprised at the end of a horror film. I mean the first time I saw it I was genuinely surprised. I didn't feel cheated at all. Besides after all the crazy killings and extreme gore I couldn't really care less how it ended! That's not to say I don't care about a cohesive storyline but in this case I was already entertained enough to not really care.

Midnight Meat Train was really great, saw that a while ago too. The only thing that ruined it for me was seeing Vinnie Jones as the killer. I know he's a tough guy in real life but I never pictured him playing a physcopath killer, more like a dept collector or something less incriminating.

Anyway thanks for the all the recs. Going to watch Eles at some point. I'll set my standards pretty low so I won't be disappointed.

Have you checked out Mordum yet? I'm pretty desensitized to most shit but a couple of scenes were eye openers.

No I havn't seen that one either. Thanks, adding it to the list! I also watched The Audition last night and actually enjoyed it, although the ending was a bit of a cop out for me. Girl starts going to town on this guy then something happens to put an end to it before the good stuff can begin. That makes me sound like some gore-fiend which I'm really not but if you're going to do a torture scene, do it properly.

Wait are you talking about August Underground Mordum? If so yeah I've seen that. It was strange.

Yeh that's the one I was talking about. I've had Philosophy Of A Knife sitting here for ages too but haven't got round to watching it. People say thats pretty unsettling but we'll see.

I was up on an allniter with the GF and I watched Philosophy Of A Knife - Aftermath - Grimlove and some other sicko all in a row. They are all a complete blur in my mind..

We'll have to agree to disagree on Eden Lake - I would have just left and I don't think that their actions were particularly justified. Then again, it could have been that I know as a viewer that I'm watching all of this unfold in the context of a horror movie, so any retaliation would have serious consequences in that environment.

Didn't really care for Frontier(s) either. I thought that it was a bit disjointed. Tried to pull in Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hostel, but ultimately failed for me. I'm surprised that you didn't care for Ils, though I think I recall you talking about that before. I thought that it was an incredibly well-done suspenseful film.

I agree with you guys on Midnight Meat Train - Definitely overlooked and a nice gory flick. Still haven't seen Martyrs. Will have to check that one out.



Was actually going to recommend that one, but wasn't sure whether or not the pacing would be interesting (love the film, but I think that it's incredibly slow at the beginning, while the climactic scene is absolutely brutal). I love Takashi Miike, though. You might want to check out Ichi The Killer, though it's more of a character piece laced with extreme violence than it is a straight-up horror film. I absolutely love it, but have to give that warning. His contribution to the Masters of Horror series, Imprint, is equally as gory and bizarre, though the acting is pretty apalling. Regardless, I enjoyed it.

You liking The Audition makes me want to recommend a short film to you. There's a collection of three short Asian horror films called Three... Extremes. The second film is directed by Chan-Wook Park, Korean directof of Oldboy - It's brilliant and I think has the sort of roughness to it that you're looking for. The other two short films are great, but might not be what you're looking for right now (the third film, "The Box" is another Miike film).

Have you seen any of the Cube movies?

I agree as well, it was cheap trick just to shock the audience, and for a film that was working reasonably well until then, there is no excuse to throw all that was good about the movie out the window, just to "trick" the viewer.

And I totally agree about Eden Lake. And its not just because I know I am watching a horror movie. Their actions were, in my opinion, ridiculous. And its because of the more realistic feel of the film that makes it impossible for me to give a damn about them after they do something so stupid (you already mentioned the scene I am talking about in your spoiler warning), and once I lose sympathy for the characters, I'm done. Same thing happened with The Strangers. I lost sympathy for the characters as soon as they started making the same mistakes that the characters in the campier horror movies make, they lost me. I didn't "believe" it, and I didn't believe Eden Lake. And for it to work for me, I have to.


Midnight Meat Train was a hell of a lot of fun, I really enjoyed it. And [REC] is excellent.

Thanks again! Those sound like they're worth checking out. It seems like Asian film makers have a completely different approach than most Western film makers in terms of how they write a scary story. I've actually never once watched an Asian slasher flick before. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing but hey.

Haha yeah I've seen the Cube movies. Thought they were awesome (at least the first 2 were) albeit completely retarded. "Hey guys this will be a movie about you all getting trapped in a big cube" Doesn't sound too interesting does it but it actually was.

I'm not completely new to horror at all I'm looking for more obscure, lesser-known horror films that don't shy away from being completely brutal, if you know what I mean.

Naked Blood is fairly hard hitting (its asian) and in a similar way part of Cutting Moments. There lots of HK Cat III out there that aren't bad and pretty nasty.

Tumbling Doll of flesh is prolly one of the nastiest I've seen but its near unwatachable.

I'm not very well versed in Cat III I've got a few from trades that I haven't got round to watching. All Night Long 2 was one of them have you seen it?

Aftermath is a classic. Its not often extreme cinema has such high production values that flick is a really surreal experience. I hired Grimm Love last night and will give it a spin over the next couple of days. I'm in the mood for a bit of nastiness after having a break from it.

I saw the first All Night Long and wasn't that impressed by it. I used to watch a lot of HK stuff more Action and martial arts but CAT III too.

A few people have recomended Ebola Syndrome to me along with Bunman... so much shit to track down and watch. As far as asain stuff goes I've mainly been watching all the Pinky Violence stuff.

Anybody seen À l'intérieur/Inside? [minor spoilers maybe]
 

Ok so I'm sure this topic comes up a lot when talking about Inside, although I doubt the topic of Inside comes up much. Basically I want to know what your take on the "zombie cop" is? I didn't quite understand it.

While alive the cop protects the protagonist. He then gets shot in the head and falls down, at this point we assume he's dead. Later in the movie he gets up, pale skin and darkened eyes and walks with a limp and blood around his mouth - he looks like he's in the early stages of being a zombie. He then attacks the protagonist, aiming directly for her unborn baby.

At first I thought maybe he was just severely brain damaged and attacked the woman because he was instinctively trying to defend himself, but if that was the case surely he'd go for her head or just swing uncontrollably instead of seemingly carrying out a calculated attack on her unborn baby.

Don't expect to get any answers here as I don't think it's that popular of a movie but thought I'd ask anyway :P

I think what he was shot with was a beanbag gun, and at point blank range. He couldn't see, probably couldn't really process rational (or any) thought either (he was bleeding pretty good out of many opening on his head haha).

Ah it was a beanbag gun lol, that explains how he was still alive. I figured he was just attacking because maybe he thought the woman he attacked was the same woman who shot him, but then why did he go for her belly specifically? Seems a little thrown-together to me, I could just be over thinking though.

Having a helpless baby in danger is a unique source of tension and I assume this scene was scripted to add to that, even if it didn't necessarily make sense. Either way, I find the scene very effective because the imagery alone is absolutely horrific.

Side note - I love and own this movie, but my husband refuses to watch it. Seems a bit backwards if you ask me. :P

I'm a guy and I actually found it very difficult to watch lol. There was one scene where I cringed, and actually held my stomach expecting to feel pain. I actually bought this blind - had no idea what it was going into it. I checked it out on IMDB after I bought it and noticed a picture of scissors over a pregnant belly and that really got to me. Pretty powerful stuff.

One of the nastiest scenes ever. I will never forget that sound.

I LOVED this movie as well. As many movies as I watch alot of them go un remembered. But this one will always stick out. But I dunno bout the 'zombie cop' either. It was definitely cool but unexplained. I dont try to make sense out of most horror movies anyway haha.
