Overrated movies which you have seen

No idea if this topic has been done before, so I thought it would be a good idea for discussion.

So, which ones do you think are grossly overrated?

Hugely popular mainstream stuff and cult classics alike, which ones made your opinion go in the opposite direction of the movie-loving public in terms of liking it?

(looking at a few hands raising up and murmuring "2001"...)

Let's hear it.

Zero 05-31-2009 07:56 AM

from dusk til dawn - i just thought it sucked

Ferox13 05-31-2009 07:57 AM

I think Bride of Frankenstein is overrated - don't get me wrong its a fantastic film but serious critics always seem to have it in their top 5. I really don't see how its much better than Whale's original film.

The Exorcist - i never thought this was very good, even backi n the day. Too long drawn out and the actual exorcist scenes verge on being camp..

Not sucked but yeah..overrated.

+all the Oscar winning Movies in Best Picture category, mainly in recent years.

crabapple 05-31-2009 09:02 AM

The Strangers - thought it was a big load of nuthin'

The Mothman 05-31-2009 04:02 PM

The Boondock Saints

The_Return 05-31-2009 04:05 PM

Jaws.

I keep saying I'm going to give it another try, but then I keep remembering how much I disliked it.

One of these days I swear I'll give that shark another day in court. Maybe.

That made me smile. That's EXACTLY how my boyfriend feels about it.

Agreed.

Did people go crazy over that movie? To me something has to be "overrated" if it's rated. :p If they did and I missed it, then I agree whole-heartedly.

...

Pan's Labyrinth. There I said it. It was gorgeous but disappointing.

Doc Faustus 05-31-2009 05:18 PM

Yeah, Pan's Labirynth was slightly shallow and the ending was unsatisfying.

I agree. Especially Crash. Over-hyped pandering load of --

...

That movie made me SO incredibly angry.

THANK YOU.

You're the only one on this board that agrees with me. One of the first arguments/discussions I ever got in around here was over my disappointment for this film. A few people tried to "EXPLAIN TO ME" what it MEANT and what the POINT was... To which I got irritated because I understood the underlying meaning, but thought it was pedestrian and thin. The movie either should have been a fractured fairy tale OR a period piece. Didn't work as both. The Devil's Backbone was amazing and should have earned the praise Pan's got.

Oh, that and Donnie Darko.

neverending 05-31-2009 07:43 PM

I might as well get everyone here hating me at once:

THE DARK KNIGHT.

Also Alien
Terminator and
Star Wars

Thank you.
I didnt care for it either. It felt like it lasted five hours. The effects were cool, other than that, I just found it bland.

Cannibal Houlcast (I wasnt shocked, I wasnt horrorifed, I wasnt anything but boared)

Friday the 13th-average slasher at very best

The Amityville Horror-snoozefest

Prom Night-see Amityville

Scarface-Ive seen it quite a few times, my brother loves it. I cant see what the big deal is. Maybe its because Im not a rapper.

Suspira-If that Dark Knight dont do that one will (slips on flame suit)

ferretchucker 06-01-2009 07:41 AM

Really liked The Dark Knight on first viewing. Tougher to watch a second time.

And here's a big one.

THE GODFATHER

And of course, 2001.

Demonique 06-01-2009 08:10 AM

The Matrix - all of them. I think this is because I feel Keanu Reeves has all the acting ability of a stunnned tuna.

scouse mac 06-01-2009 08:18 AM

Independance Day: biggest load guano Ive seen in a long time

2001: agree with others, boring boring boring

I completely agree.

The Ring......many people told me how "scary" this was. I didn't even find it particularly entertaining.

Mulholland Dr. ~ and no its not because I just didn't "get it" (like ChronoGrl with Pan's Labyrinth, many people have tried to explain it to me....like they could...:p ) I just didn't find it all that interesting.

LOL I really liked the first Matrix.....but the other two were incredibly disappointing, in my opinion. Especially Revolutions.

urgeok2 06-01-2009 09:03 AM

i think the word 'overrated' is overrated.

alkytrio666 06-01-2009 11:16 AM

The Terminator. Or, for that matter, mostly every James Cameron movie. I hate The Abyss, too. Talk about a director who loves to watch himself make spectacles.

Not sure, but at the time I was in a minority of 1 of those who hated it. Some of my friends came out of the cinema after we'd watched it absolutely raving about it.

Elvis_Christ 06-01-2009 02:19 PM

Guy Ritchie's flicks come to mind.

Dude's a really ratshit director considering all the praise lumped on him.

Part of all the Tarantino-lite bullshit that ruined the crime genre for a very long time.

Noah 06-01-2009 05:40 PM

Sin City, Lord of the Rings movies, Pirates of the Carribean movies, Harry Potter movies - I hate them all.

neverending 06-01-2009 09:09 PM

To all you 2001 haters- you find this film boring because you haven't seen it in the proper environment. Now hear me out.

I saw this film on its initial release in a true Cinerama theatre-

Quote:

Cinerama is the trademarked name for a widescreen process which works by simultaneously projecting images from three synchronized 35 mm projectors onto a huge, deeply-curved screen, subtending 146° of arc.
Omaha, my home town, had one of three "super-Cinerama" theatres ever built. Watching a film 35 feet tall and so wide an arc that you had to turn your head both to the left AND the right in order to see the entire image is nearly indescribable.

2001: A Space Odyessy was the perfect film for this venue. No film has ever been made with a wider scope thematically- the birth of humanity up to the end of humanity. The scope and sweep of this theme is told in beautiful broad strokes primarily visually. The marraige of the theme with environment (the theatre) was a mind-blowing - truly an odyessy for the mind. When you see that space station, 35 feet tall, with the majestic circular movements of the camera and the stately Strauss waltz your jaw just drops open and you go OMG, as your head pans the screen and you see each little scene taking place in each little window of the space station. There is no way somebody watching this on a 48" television could understand the impact this film had. Even seeing it in a conventional theatre carries none of the magic of the intended experience.

Some might say the film is no good if it can't convey its meaning whatever way it's shown. That's akin to saying War & Peace is a crap novel because the Classics Illustrated adaptation lacks power.

2001 is the greatest epic film ever made and the few million people who saw it as it was intended know that. It's really a shame people can't have this experience, because even though I was only 12 years old when I saw it at The Indian Hills Cinerama Theater, it's something I will remember for the rest of my life.

as far as overrated films go for me:

The Godfather
Scarface
Jurassic Park (don't hit me Ferret!)
Titanic
and anything with Arnold, Stallone, Segal or VanDamme in it.

I like 2001, too.

And I agree on all counts about Friday the 13th - DEFINITELY overrated slasher. Loved the last frame, though. Classic.

Since people are ragging on The Black Knight (which I thought was good, but not AMAZING), I would like to add that I thought Batman Begins was terrible. Christian Bale is NOT a good batman.

Elvis_Christ 06-02-2009 03:16 AM

What would you rate as good slashers?

It's his Batman voice. Made me absolutely cringe during Batman Begins.

Halloween and Black Christmas. Then again, it could be that I'm just not a fan of the 70s/80s slasher film.

BloodRedFlower 06-02-2009 06:23 AM

Citizen Kane
:p

I was 12 when I first saw 2001. One of the TV channels was doing a whole night of Sci Fi, two films and documentarys, 2001 was the culmination of the evening. Id always heard how good it was and was really looking forward to seeing it.

The first half hour did not disappoint, the dawn of man piece was brilliant but the moment the film moved into space it became a chore to watch. The visuals you describe and the impact they had on you are a far cry to what I experienced, no doubt partly due to the medium I watched the film on. I have given it a second chance but still felt the same, even though I do enjoy HALs final scenes with Dave.

If the oppotunity arose for me to watch it in the type of cinema you describe, I would definately give a go and compare the difference, but i dont think that is likely.

This is what I mean. I like an action movie just as much as any guy, don't get me wrong. There is, however, this unspoken guy rule where the certain action starts are god. I can't speak ill of David Carusoe around my boyfriend or he goes bat shit crazy about how I just don't get it. These guy's guys actors who can't act worth shit, in movies that only get ratings because there are so many wannabe, macho men in the world.

aaaand I'm prepared for the fact that most of you are gonna want to burn me at the stake now.
