The 2000s Horror Tournament

THIS TOURNAMENT

IS DEDICATED TO

HDC

The decade is almost over. Back when this decade started and we had a lot of sucky stuff coming out in our genre, most of us were of the opinion that horror, as a genre, was going down. Except for a few gems here and there, until 2006, horror had hit an all-time low among all the genres. It was then that we had the first version of this tourney, created by bwind22, which saw Shaun of the Dead win the crown.

But then...came 2007. And the revolution in modern-day post-Y2K horror started. What a year that was! Pan's Labyrinth, Grindhouse, 28 Weeks Later, 30 Days of Night, Diary of the Dead, The Orphanage, RZ's Halloween, The Mist, etc., were such heavy-hitters which achieved a lot of critical (and commercial) successes and satiated the thirst of all horror fans.

Where 2007 brought the revolution, 2008 took it one step further. [rec], Inside, Let The Right One In, Repo, all of them did well both commercially and critically. Filmmakers brought forward new and fresh ideas, and our genre is enjoying a refreshing change from the staleness that the first half of this decade had brought.

This tournament is a bit different. We have 486 films in the fray, out of which 81 heavy-hitters have already booked themselves a place in the next Round. The rest of the 405 qualifiers will duke it out among themselves for spots against them, and we will have the best of the best fighting against each other for the crown. Can Shaun still maintain its crown? I very much doubt so, but we shall see.

You, as a voter, have to choose 2 films (out of the 5) in the Qualifying Rounds. Also, the FIRST VOTER has to pick a number between 01-81 and post it, alongwith his/her choice of films. That will decide the heavyhitter against whom the films will be pitted against, in the next Round. In case the first voter forgets to post the number, the second voter may do so.

I will be signing off the tournaments with this. This will be my last tournament.

We will start in a few.

Penny Dreadful and Teeth, although I wasn't crazy about either one.

42

The Flayed One 05-19-2009 09:14 PM

Teeth and Bones both sucked. I own Sound of Thunder, though the video store copy I bought is flawed and I never bothered to return it.

So I'll default to the two unknowns with Penny Dreadful and Tooth and Nail.

Elvis_Christ 05-19-2009 09:26 PM

Teeth and Bones

My number is 69 hurrr hurrr :D

haven't seen the others, but I thought Bones was pretty funny plus it had Pam Grier and Katherine Isabelle in it. I was admittedly disappointed in Teeth but it still had its moments.

What are these numbers for _____V_____ ? Some sort of HDC bingo? What's our prizes? :)

rofl...if there was a way of playing a HDC Bingo I d surely do it and give you nice prizes. ;)

But nope, the numbers are for choosing a particular genre favorite of the 2000s against whom these qualifiers will be pitted against in the next round.

Penny Dreadful and Teeth advance on.

It's the only one of the bunch that I've seen, and I wanted to get to pick a number, haha.

Honestly, it wasn't NEARLY as bad as the first one. Pretty run-of-the-mill slasher - nothing spectacular, but no worse than most of the Halloween/Nightmare/Friday sequels. Some decent kills and gore, not much else.

Agree. This was indeed a pretty decent slasher. Worth a watch.

Btw, Black Dahlia is a horror film? I haven't seen it and so didn't know that...:o
