Grand Funk Railroad

Any one recommend me a good album to start with? Heard good things about these cats but never slapped a record on....

The_Return 05-29-2009 03:01 PM

I wouldn't call myself an expert on their stuff by any means, but I've got my dad's old vinyl copiers of "Closer to Home" and "Grand Funk", and both are pretty sweet albums. Been awhile since I gave either of 'em a spin though, I may have to do that...

Elvis_Christ 06-01-2009 12:24 PM

I'll check those ones out dude. Diggin' the fuck outta 70s rock at the moment :D

newb 06-09-2009 06:10 PM

damn...I grew up on these guys...one of my first concerts.

Pretty much anything before "All The Girls In The World Beware"..."On Time" & "Survival" being a couple of my favorites. "Caught in the Act" is a great live album.

if ya "digging the fuck" out of the 70s rock....try to get your hands on some Cactus....great fucking band right there.

Elvis_Christ 06-09-2009 07:00 PM

Thought you'd be down with these guys newb!

Looking for some Catus to have a listen to now :)

newb 06-09-2009 07:47 PM

.

Elvis_Christ 06-09-2009 08:54 PM

Got the first album on now pretty cool so far. That version of Parchman Farm is killer fuckin' wild solos!

Quite cool how they share members with Vanilla Fudge.

Do you get into the band Blackfoot dude?

I certainly do. Molly Hatchet is another great 70s southern rock band.

newb 06-10-2009 04:31 AM

Another great 70s band [ see what you got started ]...The James Gang

newb 06-10-2009 04:37 AM

and this one I know you know ;)

although more of a late 60s band

the old classic was "We're an American Band"

http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/v...k/DSC01213.jpg

the hit tune is pretty good but there is a song called Black Licorice that rocks.

weird coincidence seeing this thread.

just yesterday i was thinking about this very album, and how i used to listen to it while doing those 1000 piece crossword puzzles in the basement of my parents house..... i was just thinking how i should spin the disc again.

Elvis_Christ 06-10-2009 07:07 PM

That must be the first pressing of that Grand Funk album is it? I've only seen it with a yellow cover over here.

@newb: Never got into Molly Hatchet as much as some people do but if I find any albums in the cheap bin when I'm hunting for vinyl I'm gonna give 'em another day in court.

ahhh the mighty MC5! High Time is a pioneering album for the 70s. Soulful rock, its weird it never took off and was largely ignored upon release. Its one I listen to all the time.

.

probably - i actually have the gold vinyl version as well..

Elvis_Christ 06-11-2009 06:35 PM

The old coloured vinyl was bad for your stylus I hear?

I used to get into coloured/picture discs but found the sound to be a little shitty compared to normal wax especially with picture discs.

I imagine there'd be a bunch of gems in your collection. I'm just starting on a new collection I used to have a bunch but had to part with 'em to get rid of some debt awhile back. Its a bit daunting starting all over again but I manage to find a few resonably priced gems here and there. I've got CD-Rs of a lot of the stuff I used to have and mainly pick up stuff I haven't heard before and don't any sort of copy of so I don't get carried away and spend to much money.

oh yeah - as with the movies and books - there's one advantage to being older (especially if you have the collectors sickness)

is that I started collecting stuff in the 70's and have a lot of rare junk now just by the virtue of never getting rid of anything.

i didnt know coloured vinyl was bad for the stylus .. oh well.

i have a few others as well ... and a couple of those 'laser-etched' discks .. like Split-enz's True Colours' when albums came out with variations on the cover i tried to get them all as well ..

Yeh I've heard some of the older coloured records were made from different stuff than they do now and cause more wear on the stylus.

That edition of True Colours is really cool. I've seen that a few times over here.

I don't think I'll parting with any of my stuff soon (unless the albums totally suck) been enjoying hoarding lots of different things.

Can't stand Grand Funk. Never could. Just fucking commercial crap, IMO.

I do love Cactus though. Saw them in concert in the early 70s with Ted Nugent and Bob Seger before he went commercial. Amazing show.

Elvis_Christ 06-13-2009 12:08 AM

Sure it's commercial like 99% of rock music but Grand Funk are a lot of fun just like Kiss.

They really didn't go "commercial" until "American Band", but that album had some killer cuts on it. IMO

The mid to late 70s was a tough time for some of these bands. The music was changing and some of them tried to conform....not always with good results.

and my motto stands now as it did back then

Well a lot of their stuff is totally crap but I love Alive I & II and Hotter Than Hell.

What do you guys think of Nazareth? Hair of the Dog has some pretty cool tunes on it.

neverending 06-14-2009 09:50 PM

Love 'em.

Nitzinger too.

Elvis_Christ 06-14-2009 11:00 PM

Haven't heard Nitzinger, whats a good album?

I've got Flower Travellin' Band on at the moment pretty out there Japanese psych/hard rock band. Quite cool, only just discovered them today.

neverending 06-15-2009 12:59 AM

The first Nitzinger album is the best. The name comes from lead guitarist John Nitzinger who wrote many of the early Bloodrock songs.

You might also enjoy Black Oak Arkansas. Raunch N Roll Live is their best album. Really crazy stuff.

newb 06-15-2009 05:29 AM

I played the shit out of that one "back in the day".

neverending 06-15-2009 09:34 AM

Compared to he energy of Raunch N Roll Live they seem like they're on qualudes in that clip- particularly Diamond Jim Dandy who should be running and jumping all over the place and torturing the hell out of his vocal chords.

neverending 06-15-2009 02:36 PM

I always liked Uriah Heap. Saw Trower in concert. Never cared for Mahogany Rush.

Savoy Brown was great though.

Elvis_Christ 06-15-2009 04:08 PM

I liked UH's album Very 'eavy Very 'umble. Gypsy is a great tune, haven't heard much else.

newb 06-16-2009 08:56 AM

I'm kinda picturing neverending as a Jefferson Airplane fan or Hot Tuna.

neverending 06-16-2009 11:26 AM

Yah- love em both.

Elvis_Christ 06-29-2009 05:48 PM

You get into Pagan Altar NE?

Think they were an early 80s band but have that 70s Sabbath kinda vibe.

neverending 06-29-2009 05:56 PM

Never heard of them!

newb 06-30-2009 05:06 AM
