Groundhog Day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada on which if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If on the other hand, it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. The holiday, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a groundhog. The holiday also bears some similarities to the medieval Catholic holiday of Candlemas It also bears similarities to the Pagan festival of Imbolc, the seasonal turning point of the Celtic year, which is celebrated on February 1 and also involves weather prognostication.

ferretchucker 02-02-2009 08:29 AM

Ah, I understand. Is there just one groundhog for the country or per town etc.?

The Flayed One 02-02-2009 08:34 AM

Just one. Other towns might have their own tradition, but Puxatony Phil is the one they use for national coverage.

Roderick Usher 02-02-2009 10:36 AM

I might not be able to handle another six weeks of 70 degree weather and sunshine

Doc Faustus 02-02-2009 10:38 AM

And I wouldn't be able to handle six weeks of living near Andy Dick.

Still, Los Angeles at large has to cope with frequent Andy Dick attacks.

Per country, actually - the states have ol' Punxsutawney Phil, and we get Wiarton Willie up north.

There are a whole bunch of little guys around, too: but those are the main ones.

Doc Faustus 02-02-2009 04:12 PM

Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney is scary. The town flood with idiots, there's a lame carnival and way too much of the town's economy rides on it. In a town where houses are worth thirty thousand dollars two hundred thousand was spent on plastic sculptures of Punxsutawney Phil throughout the town. Half the town works at the County Market.
