Introducing people to Horror
So last night I had a long conversation with my friend about what genre of movies we like. The conversation ended in me suggesting a bunch of horror movies that I thought he might like. I told him to look up Argento first and foremost. He Youtubed a few scenes from various movies and fell in love. So I sent him the Giallo trailer, and told him he could borrow Suspiria next time I saw him.
Today when I talked to him, he was listening to songs by Goblin.:D I felt really, really proud to have introduced someone I care about to the movies that I love. Discuss introducing friends to great new things. |
I use 'Ilsa She wolf of the SS' as a tester on new girlfriends - my current one actually loved it..lol..
|
Awesome MM, especially because of how niche Argento can be. A lot of people I've gotten into horror still can't get into some of the Italian stuff.

I imagine a lot of failed first movie nights in your past haha. |
i introduce people to horror by grabbing the back of their necks and rubbing their noses in it..
just like when a dog poops on the floor ... or grandma |
good job MM!
I've found that those who claim they don't like horror simply haven't seen the right kind yet. There's something for everyone in the horror genre; indie art flicks, bug budget effects films, slow-burn thrillers, family dramas, goofy comedies, westerns, war movies, crime flix, religious films, teen, buddy, etc - there's a horror movie for each of these. |
its always fun introducing your friends to good movies. after missmacabre put up that thread about let the right one in i watched it and thought it was great. then i told my friend about it she watched it and loved it too.

I usually start with comedic horror like evil dead and nightmare on elm st and usually goes well.

Nearly all of my friends have picked up a thing or two from m'self and the girl...it's fun, and it helps out to not ALWAYS be the one doing everything, you get other people enthused, and they're like, unpaid labour. Movies...can't remember? Shaun of the Dead I showed to about 8 people after it's uk release, waaay before it came out here, they all quite liked it. |
I remember being so enthused by two films I dragged multiple people to see them in the theatre when they first came out. It was the only way to see a movie back then. Every person I treated to these films thought I was off my nut.
Murder By Death and Eraserhead. |
I introduced someone to Newb once, she said it was the biggest horror of her life. :D

Edited accordingly.

I though it was funnier because you messed up :P

You mean just how you messed up that smiley? :p
|
nope cause I like that smiley. The P makes a much more mocking, sticking out tongue face than the emoticon would have. :P :P :P

I don't really bother.
I sort of have a problem with other peoples' tastes not being similar to my own. Not that I have a problem with different opinions, of course, that would be silly. I just generally don't like putting forth effort into knowing people that aren't into the same shit I am into. I've operated this way with everyone in my life. Anyways...I find I get frustrated when I mention something of my interests (for the topic of my thread, we'll say Horror movies) and they look at me with blank eyes or giggle or whatever. Not worth my effort to recommend things to them. If I see the seeds have already been planted and they say they really enjoyed "X horror movie", then I will always offer up recommendations, though. That's what it's really all about, though. The seeds have to be there for me to even bother....and frankly I just don't meet many people on a day to day basis that are worth even trying to recommend great movies to. -D |
I always find it ridiculous when people say they dislike an entire genre with the size and diversity of horror. It's like saying I dislike dessert.

I'll just point them your way so they can annoy you. :p

I can understand being frustrated by others views on horror. Whenever I am about to mention I like horror movies I start out with "Now don't think I am weird or anything but.." I feel a little ashamed for saying that but at the same time, when I am meeting new people I don't want their (usually skewed) opinion on the genre to effect how they see me. Sometimes I won't bother saying anything. For instance if a person is over the age of 40 and doesn't mention horror first, or if they are someone I met through church connections I will just keep my mouth shut. Biased and horrible, I know. But I would rather not be forced to deal with the drama had they really disliked my tastes.

While introducing on of my close friends from ggrade school to some of my favourite horror movies today a hilarious conversation occured.

The remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! yeah...that's the film that I always showed to my friends whoever (not seen much horror films before) comes to me & expressed an interest to watch a good horror film from my collection. And surprisingly that works (it also dragged me into the genre as a horror fan)! Though initially they get freaked out but later they asks for some more TCM like horror films to watch. And some of them have already become horror movie freaks.:)
