You've Been Outbid
i just lost a pair of 8" subwoofers in a box with free delivery for 20 bucks, i hate the last minute stealers! gotta ruin everything.
what are some of the things you almost had but been out bidded at the last minute in e-bay? |
You just need to google ebay sniping service. You'll never win an auction without it- unless you bid rediculously high or nobody else wants the item.
|
Yeah that happens a lot on Australian Ebay as well.
Last week I was bidding for a Commodore 64 disk drive. Just 10 minutes to go, and the max bid was $5.50. It finally sold for $56. Didn't really care that I missed it, as $56 is way too much IMO. A few days ago I got a Commodore 64, disk drive, about 200 disks, some tape games, a tape player for $41 plus postage. But yeah, it is annoying to see something with just a few minutes to go that looks like a real bargain, only for last minute bidders to drive the price up beyond what it is worth. |
i lost a laserdisc collection - and player once - nice selection and great player - and it was within driving distance. I was going to get it for next to nothing when i got beat at the last second by a guy who uses a service.
turned out he was a friend of mine - so i couldnt get too pissed. i've been beaten on thousands of things but that was the only one i was upset about. |
I once lost out ona autopgraphed picture of Gunnar Hansen. The picture was of the Sawyer Family sitting on their porch and Gunnar had signed and I got outbid at the last minute.I was super pissed.
|
I don't even bother looking at stuff that isn't ending within the hour. (Why bid up the price of something you want?) And then I try to be online when my item is ending so I can be the last minute sniper. I don't use any service (never knew such a thing existed), but I generally end up getting everything I want unless the price gets bid up to highin the last few minutes and I stop bidding on it.
|
To tell you the truth, I've lost tons of auctions but I can't really remember one that I really regret. I just ended up winning another auction, buying it at the store or forgetting about it altogether.

Just be a last minute stealer yourself Ribcut. Works every time. I honestly can't think of anything I haven't won. |
If someone is using a sniping service they will beat you. They use high speed servers and place your bid for you in the last 5 seconds of the auction. If there is a counterbid they still have time to place another bid in the last 2 seconds.
|
I usually wait until there is one minute left, have a small clock in front of me, start doing all the work towards a bid, then place it when I have just under ten seconds left. If they are using a sniping service then they will of course beat you, but as I said, I've never been beat for something I was willing to keep bidding for, so I've never come across someone using a sniping service.

It's quite common in the US. Perhaps different with ebay.uk

i know, im fairly new to ebay...thats the trick i learned, just watch an item till the last minute myself and bid. |

Well, there's that old argument- I haven't seen it so it doesn't exist..
|
I didn't say it didn't exist, I'm saying I've never encountered it so it's probably not as widespread as you paranoid folks seem to think. ;) I have 350+ feedbacks and probably 500+ transactions over the course of 4-5 years.
|
I'm not paranoid- I use them. I think you may not know it when you see it.
|
If I've seen it, they're not that unbeatable then because like I said I usually win the auctions I go for unless the price goes to high & I stop bidding. (Or if I'm not online when the auction ends. That is almost a SURE way to lose an item.)
|
Do the google search. See for yourself.
Arguing isn't going to make it go away. |
We're not saying it doesn't exist, just that it seems to be either not that common or isn't that effective.
Also, the US and UK use different sites, like Google. The two sometimes mix. Say, if an English seller thought there would be more interest in the US, he would put his item up but have the money in Pounds Sterling just for his ease. |

Who's arguing? I'm not saying they don't exist or that you don't use one. I'm just stating my personal experience which leads me to believe, like ferret said, they may not be all that effective or commonplace. |
So you can time bids to take place in the last 5 seconds of an auction on your own? And if there's a counterbid, you can rebid within 2 seconds?
You're a prodigy! |
Quote:
Yes, I can time my bids to hit within the last couple seconds of the auction and anyone can do it. That doesn't make for a prodigy, it just means I'm able to watch a clock. I usually enter my bid with 3-4 seconds left and get the item I want. I can't get a 2nd bid in after that, but I've seldom needed to (The main problem I've come across, which is fairly rare too, would be the person with the standing high bid has their maximum set higher than what I enter.) *shrug* |
Well, you're truly amazing. You must be the winningest bidder on ebay with those mad bidding skillz.
Next time I wanna bid on something I'm contacting you instead of using a sniper. I'm atingle with anticipation! |
Quote:
I never said that my method of winning auctions was better than your method, nor did I say anything negative in your direction. All I've said is that my method has served me well, anyone can do it and that I've never had a problem losing items to people using programs. So what's with the crabby pants you're sportin? |
No, I'm serious- you'll hear from me next time I need to bid on something!
|
There's several reasons that letting me know what item you want to bid on won't do you any good.
1-Unless you want to give me access to your account, why would I buy something I don't want? 2-If your sniping tool is as excellent as you claim, there's no reason for you not to use it. 3-You can follow the simple instructions I've posted and win the item using my method yourself if you feel so inclined. 4-Why would I do you a favor? "I'm atingle with anticipation" for what will certainly be another sarcastic, pissy and immature response. |
You WOULDN'T help me out?????
|
|
What's up NE, you seem to be getting pretty touchy about the subject?

i hate when that happens. |

We have something like that over here but its called trade-me.
Usually the case, the seller or his friends are the ones doing the bidding ..in a hope that the buyer will go higher..[ a few have been caught out like that] I refuse to buy from those places anymore..sometimes the prices are ridiculous.. especially for phones and computer shit. |

AuctionSniper all the way for me. |

That hasn't happened yet. But what probably would happen is he would keep it and his brother would leave him feedback.

Yeh. I don't know. Come to think of it, the feedback thing is pretty unlikely because if he did that he'd do it all the time. I'm not sure.
|
I rarely bother with Ebay...too much hassle. I know you can get awesome deals, but honestly? The stuff I like to buy isn't expensive enough for me to really care. Plus, its way too easy to get ripped off.
