Toys: Open or Keep Sealed

i was gonna start a horror action figure collection like some members have, but couldnt decide wether to open them and set up or to keep them wrapped forever....

how do you have your toys? and whats the reason why you chose for your collection?

i was planning on keeping them sealed, but thought to myself i wasnt going to sell them at all so i probably should open them for a cool display..but thats a reason for collecting, to keep something in a preservative state..?

Painfulldeath 11-27-2008 07:22 AM

All of my toys are opened since they're from when I was a kid. But I've been thinking of getting a couple of figurines to decorate my place. Open them if you know for sure that you'll never think about reselling them. If you're actually going to start a collection and are going to check their value regularly, then I would keep them sealed.

bloody_ribcut 11-27-2008 07:49 AM

yeah,im most likely gonna open mine...

urgeok2 11-27-2008 07:53 AM

i keep mine closed - if i buy them closed.

mainly as not to lose the small parts

mikeyjay88 11-27-2008 08:00 AM

I keep them sealed. I never plan on selling them i just like keeping them in mint condition.

ferretchucker 11-27-2008 08:25 AM

I think it's kinda silly keeping them sealed, and if you do, maybe get two of them, so you can open one. I just don't see the point in having them sealed unless you plan to sell them one day. I think, if you want decorations, get models designed to be sat on the mantle. Afterall, it looks pretty bad if you have them all sealed up on the shelf. Kinda cheap looking.

stubbornforgey 11-27-2008 12:43 PM

Keeping them sealed ...keeps them in mint condition.
The last thing you want are fingerprint marks all over them or even dust
settling over them..especially if your a collector.
My nephew has 5000 toy cars..all still sealed.
they look great too.

VampiricClown 11-27-2008 03:33 PM

Mine are about half and half.

Elvis_Christ 11-27-2008 03:50 PM

A bit of both for me. If it looks cooler sealed I'll keep it that way, I'm not to worried about the value of them its an asethtic thing for me.

Phalanx 11-27-2008 03:51 PM

If for later resale, keep sealed.
If for your personal collection, and you don't really give a shit and can treat them carefully/respectfully enough to not break them (pretty easy but many seem to fail) then open 'em up and pose 'em around your room I say.

Like with comics...for as many people keep them in the hope of another "boom", read once if that then sealed, it's really more enjoyable to the original "owner" to be able to just re-read whenever they like, have a box of comics, stuff one folded into the pants pocket.

So I guess if it's for you, I'd say open it.
If not, keep it in good nik, sealed.

Disease 11-27-2008 03:53 PM

Open, have can they fight each other sealed in plastic?

urgeok2 11-27-2008 03:55 PM

yeah - thats one of the things re. keeping mine closed - its not like i'm actually going to play with them..

Thats right. Free them outta their plastic prisons for wartime!

Freak 11-27-2008 05:57 PM

Most of mine are open cause I like the way they look displayed but there are a few that are still sealed.

missmacabre 11-27-2008 06:57 PM

I keep mine sealed for the most part but I did open a ninja turtle who does flips. It's pretty wicked.

newb 11-27-2008 09:01 PM

As has been stated....if you plan on selling them....keep sealed....if you plan on displaying them on a shelf...for all to see...by all means take them out of the package.

But give it some thought....I opened all of mine and have them all on a shelf....but sometimes I wonder if I could get big bucks on e-bay....would I sell them.....the answer is ....hell yeah......some of them anyway.

But the way I see it, what's the point in having them in good condition if you can never use or touch them? They're just there, waiting all the time for someone to visit the house that won't mind taking a look.

if you had a painting - would you play with it ?

ferretchucker 11-28-2008 08:48 AM

Fair point. But paintings aren't designed to be held and played with. Things like action figures and toy cars etc are.

i saw on people bidding on ebay toys unwrapped, evern with pieces missing they were fetching a pretty penny...

i keep thinking about it, i saw the jim morrison toy at texastoyz for like 80 dollars.....im having trouble decide wether i should open the expensive ones..

urgeok2 11-28-2008 08:54 AM

they're designed to be whatever the purchaser wants them to be.

i enjoy looking at them .. plus being a collector and a bit of a completist - i lke having them. they remind me of the movies i like and are cool little 3 dimentional representations of the things i enjoy in those movies .. but i have no desire to play with them.

..

i paid a lot for my Futurama toys ... and they are open - they are also long out of production and due to the limited popularity at the time - fairly rare.

i still dont play with them though :D

UngodlyWarlock 11-28-2008 08:59 AM

I never judge what people do with their toys, but personally I open all of mine....

I have a couple Japanese exclusive Transformers that I bought from the early 90's which I bought mint for 200-300 bucks a piece and I happily busted them out. I would just say to myself "I just made the mint value of this toy go up in price!"

...and I'm happy to. I don't buy toys to rot in a box, I buy them to enjoy mostly for display, but occasional fiddling.

-D

we talking toys, or vegetables ?

couple of things ..

for a lot of the toys the box serves as a display as well ... sometimes they look better in the box.

also - i have an 8 year old kid ... once open - these are fair game with him and he WILL lose the parts.

I'm hoping to pass everything down to him one day . if i keep everything perfect - he may have his first car if he decides to sell these things.

I also like to think he'd keep them to remember me by - but who knows)

at any rate the bottom line is : even if i open them - I'm 47 - what am i gonna do ? pose them ? at that point - yes - they will feel like 'dolls'

newb 11-28-2008 09:22 AM

I have mine all set up on a shelf....it looks pretty cool. But no....I never "played" with them. Although when I was a boy, I did have G.I. Joes....the big ones...not the stupid little ones. So I guess I did play with dolls at some point.:o

funny.....they ALL had the same scar....I wish I kept these from my childhood

I had Major Matt Mason instead of GI Joe (typical canadian - didnt like war toys)

No one i mention Major Matt MAson has ever heard of him ... i LOVED those toys. He was a space guy ... I had him and his buddies - the gliders they came on ... the alien, the space equipment - lunar vehicles, and even the space station.

like everything else that would be worth a fortune now - my parents tossed them out - when they figured i was done with them ...

crabapple 11-28-2008 09:57 AM

Yeah, I had this one toy in the package for a couple of years...for some reason I had been thinking, "Oh, I'll keep it in the package...it'll be nice and safe in there..." And then a few days ago I was looking at it, and thinking, "Hmm...I should really take this out of the package, put it on the base, put the sword in its hand, set it up properly" and so I did this. Aha! It looks good this way now too.

There is a time for being in the package and a time for not being in the package!

bloody_ribcut 11-28-2008 10:06 AM

hard decision,... now i wanna keep them sealed.....

i took chucky and his family out of the seed box set, stood them up and felt it didnt look right...i guess only some toys look good displayed. i was just testing the waters with chucky because when we first bought him, my brother had already broken off the arm of tiffany and decapited glenn. but i fixed them.

and to add on the sub con, i remember playing with the "stupid" small g.i. joes....i had all the cool ones like snake eyes, slice, and dice, after the revengoe of the ninja i was hooked.
one time as a kid, my mom and i went to the park and brought home a giant boulder so i can use it as a command base or have a rocky battle.lmao, those were the days

LOL. My friend back in the day had like 150 of those little GI joes. He had both the Cobra base and GI Joe bases. The cobra base was so much cooler cause it had 4 stations with automatic rifles. Plus it was way bigger. Those were fun times. :D

Well, they're design specifications probably involves making them so they're easier to play with than most other things, but I see what you mean.

I personally don't play with mine anymore, but I'm glad I did, because I think at my age then I go more enjoyment out of them than I would just looking at them. Now I have a few things on display. I think they look better outside of the packaging because you can pose them etc.

pose them to do what ?

at my age - no matter what answer you give - it's going to seem silly :)

Angra 11-28-2008 12:27 PM

When i was a lil boy G.I Joe (the small ones) was the shit.

Being a huge martial art fan in a very early age I spend hours and hours making blood sport tournaments with them, beating the shit out of each other. Never cared for the weapons.

Good times... Then I turned 16 and playing with my G.I. Joes started getting embarrasing. :(

bwind22 11-28-2008 04:30 PM

All of my old toys (GI Joe, Ninja Turtles, Marvel, WWF) are opened and played with.

The newer toys I've purchased as an adult are about half and half. I've got tons of unopened Simpsons toys. They are all in mint, but they just sit in boxes taking up space in my garage. My Movie Maniacs are unopened but displayed in their packages. I also collect some of the kids toys from McDs or Burger King whenever they have something good (Star Wars or Simpsons). I open those and display them since they're not worth more than a buck or two anyway.
