Holiday Dishes?
With all the threads about people's feelings about the upcoming holidays, are there any special dishes you make for Thanksgiving, Christmas or any of the other holidays (Hannakah, Kwanzaa, etc) And if you're a vegetarian, I encourage you to post your specialities. You're also welcome to post recipes in case our fellow hdc family is curious or wants to try something new in their stomach this year.
Ahem: Let the grub fest begin !!!! :D |
For Thanksgiving I like to make scalloped corn. My family has the best recipe for it.
Every year for Christmas we have peanut butter kiss cookies and we also have pineapple cheese bread, which sounds weird and gross but it's actually really good. |

That scalloped corn sounds really good! For Thanksgiving I usually make sweet potato casserole, and my sister makes mashed turnips. For Christmas, I make pineapple stuffing to go with the ham. |
i thought this thread was gonna be about washing the dishes during the holidays....which i hate
during the festivities, i like having fruit salad. |

That's why we use paper plates! |
Usually an assortment of nuts. The best ones a chestnuts that we roast ourselves. Also chocolates and for some reason lime cordial.

as much as i am not a meat and potatos guy (i think north american food is crap) i do find nostalgic comfort in our traditional xmas/thanksgiving meals .. which were always the same thing in our house :
turkey with dressing potatoes (usually mashed) sweet potatoes broccoli (or green beens) sometimes a turnup/carrot mix and strawberry-rhubarb pie |

ohhh not me - strawberry rhubarb is my favorite all time pie (well, 2nd favorite ;) ) |
I just have to ask, what is canadian thanksgiving about? The american's is celebrating a time when us English went over and raped the natives land. What is the candian one about?
|
we celebrate when we raped the americans
|
My fave thing is actually cranberry sauce,i love it.I will only eat it at Thanksgiving.
|
We usually have the same thing on Thanksgiving and Christmas. My grandparents make fantastic turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, and sweet tea. They make other things, but that's all I eat.
|
|
Pork for Thanksgiving and turkey for Christmas. Sweet potatoes and/or yams, dressing with either meat, pumpkin pie, steamed veggies of some sort, and a small pot of boiled chicken livers just for me to snack on.:)
|
But by far my favorite Thanksgiving thing is when I make a casserole out of my cat, Old Hootie. He crawls into the baking dish by himself and soaks himself and then tucks himself in under a layer of noodles. Then he passes out for a while. Then he crawls out of the casserole dish. In this way, Hootie is recycled and we can use him again that way next year. :)

EVERY Thanksgiving Dinner for us:
Turkey Ham Mashed potatoes and gravy Potato salad Sweet potatoes Green beans with bacon Cranberry sauce Broccoli with cheese sauce Macaroni and cheese Yeast Rolls 2 kinds of stuffing - Stove Top and homemade giblet stuffing Deviled eggs Fresh vegetable plate with Ranch Dip - Baby carrots, broccoli, celery, green olives, black olvies, gerkins Spinach dip with mini rye bread slices Pumpkin Pie Apple Pie Cherry Pie Sometimes Chocolate Silk Pie, but not every time. Exact same things at Christmas and Easter, only without the turkey and cranberry sauce (Ham dominates during those holidays) Dammit...Now I'm hungry |

Holy shit, Rayne! Do you feed an army? :D |

I've done it a couple times, but I make the same things she does, and she really prefers to do it at her place because cooking Thanksgiving dinner makes her happy. Our "army": Mom Me Dustin Seri (always had Shane with her until last year - seems odd without him now) Alex Ash Jordan (Dustin's son) Jennifer (my sister) Jennifer's boyfriend of the month...I guess it'll be 'Jack' (or 'Jake', I can't remember his name, she met him 2 months ago) this year. Briahnna (sister's kid) Cheyenne (sister's kid) Allen (sister's kid) My uncle Terry (Mom's brother) Joy (Terry's wife) My uncle Tommy (Mom's brother) Sarah (Tommy's wife) That's our usual holiday bunch :) |
Thanksgiving is my time to shine!

[QUOTE=bloodrayne;761381]Thanksgiving is her all-time favorite holiday, and it sometimes falls on her birthday, which makes her very happy :)
QUOTE] Same thing with my brother--his bdays the 26th--and leap years I think it falls on his bday--it might be the other way around. I know that sometimes it falls on the day before (it does this year) or the day of. I'm similar with xmas--my bday is a week before it. |
