"Punk" film recs
So I just watched Repo Man yesterday for the third or fourth time, and it really got me thinking this time:
I'd like to check out more "punk" genre films. They have a really interesting feel, almost exploitative. I've seen a few of the more popular ones (Repo Man, The Warriors, etc.), but I'd like to check out more of these. Anyone have any recommendations? |
Those would make for a good starter list. |

I've seen a few of those, but the rest I'm queuing as soon as I'm done typing. Excellent. Thanks, bud. |
DOA
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082226/ This is a great movie! Detailing the Sex Pistols rise to fame and their only American tour. Rare footage of Sid and Nancy interviewed in a hotel bed that is HARROWING- as good as the movie Sid and Nancy is, it just can't compare to seeing the real thing. I'll second the recommendations on Suburbia- really amazing movie directed by Penelope Spheeris. Likewise Liquid Sky is a GREAT movie- dunno if I'd call it punk though- it's kind of new wavey sci-fi. And Up in Smoke? That's a HIPPIE movie! It's Cheech & Chong! |

EDIT - I am sure Elvis has plenty of recs to throw in here, too. Just wait till he comes on. |
Trainspotting
The Wanderers Slam Dance Assault on Precinct 13 The Incident |
Not sure if this qualifies as a "punk movie" but I was a big fan of Empire Records in high school.
|
You need to check out The Filth and the Fury. It is an early 2000s documentary movie based on The Sex Pistols band. Pretty powerful stuff.
|
Driller Killer, Jubilee.
|
I'm pretty green on this genre myself, but I'd second __V__'s rec of Class of 1984, if you haven't already seen it.
That movie is just the definition of badass. |
Return of the Living Dead - "Do you wanna paaarrrrttyyyy - its party time!"
i also liked a few odd indie flicks - Six String Samurai and Radioactive Dreams also - probably someone said this above -but Sid and Nancy is one of my all-time favorite flicks |
I'll second these ones for sure...
Suburbia (The older one with Flea, not so much the 90s with Giovanni Ribisi) SLC Punk DOA Sid & Nancy Trainspotting (Not sure I'd call it a punk film, but it's a great movie nonetheless.) American History X (See Trainspotting comment) |

I should be occupied for a while, though. Thanks for the recs, guys! And keep 'em coming, if so inclined. |

In a way, Road Warrior is distinctly industrial punk meets apocalypse. |
Bump for Elvis.
C'mon, bud. I need your help! |
Suburbia is essential viewing it really captures that era its THE punk flick.
Ex Drummer is fucking amazing. Can't recommend that one enough! This Is England explores the skinhead culture a lot more than Romper Stomper and gives you an idea of what early 80s England would've been like. I guess its up to interpretation of what defines a "punk" movie but here's some that weren't mentioned (including some documentaries): Intrepidos Punks Population: 1 Hard Core Logo Class Of 1999 1990: The Bronx Warriors Dogs In Space Class Of Nuke 'em High Reform School Girls Straight To Hell No Apparent Motive The Great Rock n' Roll Swindle Rude Boy Another State Of Mind American Hardcore Hated The Decline Of Western Civilization I & III (the third one is great) Rock n' Roll High School All I can think of right now there's a bunch I'm forgetting :D |
Ah, that's perfect.
Thanks so much! And thanks again everyone for all of your recommendations. Like I said, I'll be busy for a while. |

There's also (if they haven't been mentioned) Made in Britain with Tim Roth Meantime has a Skinhead played by Gary Oldman in it and a bit of punk music. The punk and the Princess (never seen it) Scum (not really a punk movie at all but popular amongst the punks and skins) Clockwork orange (again not punk...but loved by P's and S's) (Hated in the Nation: Flew to bloody Sweden the other day to see The Murder Junkies to here some GG songs...damn concert was cancelled) |
Scum and Made In Britain are great films. Alan Clarke (RIP) was a great director.
I caught Meantime on TV years ago and have always meant to track it down again. |

should have known you'd already nailed them |
Ooooh...Train of Dreams...Kinda like Scum but not so violent.
It's about a HC (or you guess he's a HC kid) going to some juvenile detention centre...Canadian and hard to find. Not really a punk film but you know...the main guy is. One scene he recites 'I saw Your Mommy...' by ST and in another sings a Pistols song. |
Has anybody seen The Anarchist Cookbook yet? I've been putting that one off for too long I think...
|
Rock N' Roll High School.

i know it's got ed harris in it - based on a historical figure - but - as in Straight To Hell - the past is intermingled with the present. |
Elvis - the film I mentioned "Train of Dreams" is damn near impossible to find but I have a copie on VHS...cant find a DVD....
It used to be shown on C4 in the UK. By the way: where are you from:? |
Wow ive never been to into the punk films. Have seen alot of the mainstream ones and any that would be horror/punk but didnt realise there were so many.
|

He always forgets to bring it with him when he's in town. Also, he has the book that I've been able to skim through. Kick ass. They've covered all the one's I ment to recommend. I grew up on Sid & Nancy... Have to agree to that one. American History X is a popular one. I've seen a few documentries, but I'm bad with names... Sorry! I'm adding some of these to my wishlist as well! By the way... Cro-Mags are awesome. I've never seen such a show though! I'm used to the one's in people's backyards and in storage sheds! Can't beat the one at Daze's house. He has an empty pool. :p |
Antiseen were in a zombie movie called Come Get Some!
The Crom-Mags scene isn't a real gig...just made for the movie... OHHHH - You all forgot Summer of Sam (I think it hasn't been mentioned). Punk character and George Tabb from Furious George is in it... |
Suburbia really is the definitive punk movie followed up by Sid & Nancy and SLC Punk.

i love how they cleared the punks out of the club.. a strip mall by my place plays classical music on the outdoor speakers at night to discourage kids from loitering. that would have never worked on me or my friends back in the day.. |

They might grow an appreciation for classical music and that plan will backfire. |

How can Wikipedia leave DOA (1980) off the list?
