Games that scare/scared you

Its All Hallows Eve, so i figured this would be a good time to talk about games that scared the ever living shit out of you. I am thinking more of games that filled you with an overall sense of dread through out rather than a few jumping moments.

For starters:

FEAR. Of course. Although it has some of the best all out action of any game i have ever played, the sequences with Alma, Paxton and the Shades (for lack of a better term) Have in some cases left me shaking. They managed to take everything that was scary about movies like the Ring and put them into a game. The Add-on Extraction Point builds on the original game perfectly, and when two of the character's from the original meet their end in it, it is heartbreaking for one, and just pants-shitting scary for the other. If you havent played it, go get it.

Quake. Between the zombies fiends and shamblers, i would sit in a protected corner for minutes soemtimes waiting to get the courage to get chased down and slaughtered. And of course, the fiends always liked to attack in the dark or in hallways with strobes...

They Hunger, 1,2,3:
The greatest Single PLayer mod ever for any game, ever. Neil Manke and his team were obviously die hard fans of classic horror movies and NOTLD. It is one of the most atmospheric games I have ever played. What it lacks in sophistication it more than makes up for in originality and great zombie kills.

Fatal Frame

It scared me really bad the first time I played it. After that, it didn't really affect me.

Vodstok 10-31-2008 05:36 AM

I am a ridiculously sensitive human being, so i rarely get desensitized to games. It took close to 30 or 40 times through quake for me to stop jumping (i didnt have much of a life back then).

I consider myself lucky in that regard because i still get that "new" feeling from games after playing through several times.

_____V_____ 10-31-2008 05:50 AM

Fatal Frame had some genuinely jumpy moments.

I thought Doom 3 had some "Jesus!" moments too.

FEAR was good, although I wasnt scared too much...the ending had me watching with my mouth open though.

I guess I was a bit shaky while playing Clive Barker's Undying. Some of the sequences, coupled with the background scores, had me uncomfortable and squirming more than once.

Doom 3...lots of atmosphere

Fear had some creepy moments

There was one part in Resident Evil that made me jump

The Ravenholm level in Half Life 2 had some real tense parts

and just two nights ago...I was playing Far Cry 2...now this isn't what you would call a "scary" game...but I was buzzing along in a boat on the river when I decided to pull over to the shore and get off....as I'm pulling up to the river bank a fucking car comes flying over this little hill and just misses my head by inches and lands in the water neat to my boat.....scared the shit out of me.

I read about this game over a year ago and they had me drooling over the realistic fire the same way Bioshock had me drooling over the water. Supposedly, it would ignite brush and spread in teh wind realisticly. Does it?

If i remember correctly, I think the demo i read about was using a physics card, so I imagine it would be ridiculously realistic.

if only I had 20 grand for a new pc...

Phalanx 10-31-2008 08:14 AM

Undying
Quake 1
Sonic the Hedgehog (yknow...when you're running outta air, the panic sets in)
5 days a stranger
Alien resurrection
Land of the dead (gameplay not great, atmosphere awesome)
nosferatu - wrath of malakai
The Thing

I completely get this one. Sometimes, those damn bubbles just couldnt come fast enough.

La Chat Noire 10-31-2008 10:41 AM

Resident Evil 4 made me jump at some parts, like when I had to go down in the sewer where the giant invisible bugs were. They made these awful screeching noises and I kept jumping and accidentally dropping the controller.

Despare 10-31-2008 11:12 AM

Eternal Darkness

It almost made me take back my Gamecube when it went into the fake shutdown mode. Bastard of a game...

I agree. I hated that. It makes you get up and stand at the TV, almost pacing.

Good call. Forgot that one too.

Nauseatingly fidgety in many parts, especially the corridors.

Leprucky Cougar 10-31-2008 06:31 PM

Silent Hill...especially when I played alone with the lights off at midnight

monster123 10-31-2008 07:13 PM

I have to agree with LC silent hill scared me so did Eternal darkness it just played with my mind and really freaked me out.

Don't wanna sound like a wuss, but Ive played many games that have scared me before. Games usually scare me a hell of a lot more than movies. I really haven't seen a film thats scared me but there are more than a few games.

I guess Condemned freaked me out the most. Eh...it got to the point where I stopped liking it cause there was too much tension.

The Thing scared me when it first came out. Me being younger then most likely made the effect stronger. Then I played it about a year ago and it kinda lost its spark for scares but was fun to play nonetheless.

Doom 3, FEAR, Silent Hill, first few minutes of Bioshock are some notably tense games.

Dont feel like a wuss, some of us are affected way more than others. I am one of them, it took me a couple of years to make it through They Hunger, it scared me that much.

I'm the same way.

Bioshock definitely had me on my toes... The fact that you could HEAR your enemies lurking before you saw them... That and sometimes they would sneak up behind you and wait for you to turn around...

Condemned II scared me so much I had to make my boyfriend play it through a couple of levels... Though the first Condemned was definitely darker and spookier. Both freaked me up a bit.

DAMN those bubbles.

YOU need to find a Gamecube and play Eternal Darkness. You character starts to go mad as things get intense and he'll hallucinate; your limbs will start falling off as you walk or it'll rain blood, and like I mentioned before on trick makes it look like your Gamecube turned itself off. Makes for a pretty cool experience even if it is a bit dated now.

Another one which made me really fidgety was System Shock 2.

Brrr...those sounds.

And like Bioshock you would be looking around a room, taking things in, turn around and have some asshole monster just ready to attack.

Thats why it was more effective than RE 2, which I thought was the most scary out of all the RE games.

RE 2 was scary as hell but I'll never forget running from the Nemesis just to have him burst through a wall in front of me and make me run the other way. Code Veronica has some killer moments too. Oh, and I'm an RE fanboy :o

Oh boy dont remind me about Nemesis. He was a real pain in the ass. :D

Although the licker in the mirror in RE 2 was a real jumpy moment. Same when the zombies jumped through, crashing windows.

NICE

As it turns out, we have a dusty Gamecube in the bedroom. I'll have to see if I can find Eternal Darkness.

The only thing that really scares me is heights.

I think it's because, I can make latex masks, effects, etc.. Ghosts don't bother me anymore. And I know that when the lights go out, the scariest thing out there, are humans.

I see quite well in the dark. ;)

The one game that's ever really frightened the hell out of me was Clock Tower 2.

I remember playing it when I was maybe 14 and hearing the little girl laughing, and then things just coming out running at you. Traumatized me. Then my friend bought Clock Tower 3 and invited me over, such a creul bastard he was.

Brought my memories back, with better graphics.

Also ObsCure was quite chilling too.

CrimsonFiend138 12-11-2008 10:45 PM

Silent Hills always Creeped me out. I rememeber when I was little I'd ask my brother where all the zombies were in Resident Evil 1(like he could do that lol, told me to stop being a pussy).

From the little bit of Condemned I played freaked me out, I looked over this balcony and this guy jumped up and I started shooting and he dropped back down HAHA that scared me.

One part in Resident Evil 1, the hallways where that room with the dropping ceiling, and the angles made it scary, and when I FINALLY got over the fact there was nothing there, I had to come back later on in the game and a green monster called a hunter popped out from behind one of the walls.

Before mentioned The Licker that break through the Two way mirror in Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil 3 anytime the Nemesis Chased me.

I tried playing the SNES Clocktower but it was too hard. Something very scary about being chased by just one guy instead of killing a bunch of enemies.

The scary thing about video games is it feels like its YOU, its you the whole time. Instead of like movies where someone walks into a room and the camera switches as if the monster is watching(which I always hated because you don't get the fear they are feeling, it's just a camera angle)

freddy69 12-13-2008 08:49 AM

Maybe "mirrors edge" would scare you some then...

When I was little... (and if you have heard of this game you'll no doubt laugh) Corridor 7 scared me so much. But that's why I loved it. I would spend a good five minutes readying myself to hit this switch that would release some big slimy eyeballs... then run away like a sissy! Aaah, good times.

Apart from that, Quake II... I remember having a few nightmares brought on by that game. But again it's why I loved it.

I'll admit, even today I get scared playing certain video games... mainly Resident Evil (I was playing the remake on the Gamecube) that game gave me way too many jolts.

And the Silent Hill series ♥ ♥ ♥
I have to inch my way through those.

But eh! Being scared is fun so I'm not all that ashamed to be scared of pixels. :)

missmacabre 01-02-2009 01:08 PM

The first run in with a berzerker in Gears of War scared the shit out of me the other day. Not fun at all.
