My Annual November Movie Marathon

Some of you know about this from last year, some don't.

So yes, November 1 comes yet again. And its the time I start my monthly movies extravaganza. This year I have decided to get myself totally entertained. No heavy-duty stuff, no Jodorowsky or Aronofsky kinda flicks, just pure, sheer, cheesy entertainment.

I have lined up a bunch of creature flicks to tee off.
  • Jurassic Park I, II, III
    The Jaws flicks
    Lake Placid
    Tremors flicks
    Eight Legged Freaks
    Them
    Tarantula
    Earth vs The Spider
    Anaconda
    Snakes on a Plane
    Godzilla (both Jap and US)
    Crocodile
    Alligator and Alligator II
    Frankenfish
    Kaw
    Arachnophobia
    The Relic
    Ice Spiders
    Primeval

I ll pick some more later.

It will be like 3-4 movies every evening, through into the night. And I need more recommendations!

Remember, it should be fun, mindless entertainment. Cheesy is good, I would love cheese. But no thinking or critical analysis stuff ok?

Movies which would rate around 7, 6 even 5 - are all good. Heck throw in some 4s too, just as long as they arent TOO bad.

I know Jenna and Rayne would have a rollickingly good time recommending stuff to me in this thread. :)

missmacabre 10-30-2008 08:16 PM

black sheep
shrooms made me laugh but i guess thats a little more on the trippy side
pirannah

_____V_____ 10-31-2008 12:52 AM

Piranha, thats a good one.

Meh I dunno if I can stand Shrooms or Black Sheep. Need some elaboration first.

What about a flick called A Sound of Thunder? Written by Ray Bradbury...have heard really mixed stuff about it so far.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318081/

Another one which I forgot was Q: The Winged Serpent. I remember Urge recommending it to me, so it goes into my Nov Film Festival lineup.

Between Leviathan and Deep Star Six, which one would you recommend? Or are they both good enuff for a spin?

Also, any other flicks like Dog Soldiers out there? I really loved that one, and any similar flick, even average, would be good by me. :)

And what about these low-budget bad ones - Boa, Boa vs Python, King Cobra, Komodo, etc.?

ManchestrMorgue 10-31-2008 02:16 AM

As far as bad, low budget creature flicks go, why not consider:

Blood Beach
Killer Fish
A*P*E
SSSSSSSSnake

The_Return 10-31-2008 03:12 AM

DO NOT go for A Sound of Thunder!

That one isn't even entertaining...it's just bad. Especially if you're familiar with the original story - when I saw it, I'd never read the story and HATED the movie. Then I read it a few months later, and hated the movie that much more.

Blechh.

That said, you've got a fun looking lineup and a great plan for the month. I adore this kind of flick, so you can bet I'll be giving a plethora of suggestions as soon as I get home :)

Ps - I'll second Q: The winged Serpent. I also checked it out on Urge's recommendation, and it was an absolute blast. Everything a horror movie should be; I really need to find a copy of my own...

pass on this one

Bad Moon was pretty good--http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115610/

Eegah!
The Loved One
The Thing with 2 Heads
Anything with Pia Zadora
Some Call it Loving
Queen of Outer Space
Gruesome Twosome
Dirty Dingus Magee
The Poppy is also a Flower
Zardoz

These should all give you a chuckle.

Nella 10-31-2008 05:37 AM

I really liked Komodo! What about King Kong (70's), Sasquatch, Critters, Gremlins, Bats, Alien, and the eel in The Deep? I know Sasquatch and Critters were low-budget films. The creatures in The Descent? They? Pumpkinhead? Puppetmaster?

I'll try to think of more.

Edited to add: The rats in Willard and Man's Best Friend

_____V_____ 10-31-2008 05:37 AM

Bad Moon looks pretty badass. I have to get hold of a copy. Thanks, Newb. :)

Blood Beach - Wasnt that the one where people get killed by getting sucked into the beach sand...some kind of a Tremors creature under it? Should be interesting.

I ll check out the other 3 too. Thanks, Manchestr.

Whoa...thanks for the heads-up, bud.

I read somewhere that they used up a pretty sizeable budget in the movie, and also Peter Hyams was not that bad. But now I ll stay clear of that one till I have nothing better to watch.

And Q getting a second thumbs-up...it's into my list of watches, for sure. :)

King Kong wasnt exactly low budget. Critters is good. I ll toss in the first one.

Watched Gremlins one too many times. I think I ll skip it for this one. Thanks anyway.

The Thing with 2 Heads was a real blast. Reminds me, I have to get Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and 20 Million Miles To Earth for some good, old-school cheesy fun.

Plenty of good recs already. Keep em coming, folks!

I ll look into those 4. Been wanting to watch Jack Brooks for awhile now. Guess I ll go grab a copy.

Hmm...The Deep wasn't exactly horror. They as in Wes Craven? Seen it long time ago, and I dont remember much of it. Puppet Master is not exactly a creature flick either. Pumpkinhead is good...the sequel should make it into my final list. (watched the original at least 2-3 times)

The first post where I said I liked Komodo was edited because I double-posted. The film was scary and I really liked it! ;) I'll edit my last post.

V, Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a made-for-TV movie that scared me. I think I'll add it to my queue. It's not really funny, but you might consider it cheesy.

What genre(s) do The Deep and Puppetmaster belong in if they aren't creature movies?

Just curious...:) I know they aren't monsters but to me, they were creepy.

Edited to please Festered. ;)

Dark Night was a mildly amusing flick. I liked it.

The Deep is more like an adventure/thriller flick, if you are talking about the Nick Nolte one. It would be miscategorising it to call it horror, or a creature movie.

I always thought Puppet Master was an idea which sprung up after the success of Child's Play. Technically they arent creatures, but "little buggers." Scary dolls never entertained me much though.

re93animator 10-31-2008 07:00 AM

and more...

Wishmaster 1 & 2
Mimic 1 & 2
Fight Club (Not horror but fits in with the other films mentioned)
Dagon
Stuck (Came out recently. Great movie.)
Videodrome
Dusk Till Dawn
The Abominable Snowman (50's Hammer version)
Creepshow
Predator
Ravenous

Creature From the Black Lagoon films
Slither

Nella 10-31-2008 07:11 AM

Ok, thanks for clearing that up, V. :) Sorry I put King Kong on my list. I just started adding creature flicks without even thinking.

Quote:

They as in Wes Craven?
Yes. It's a 2002 movie. I thought it was older and it's definitely cheesy IMHO. I guess it doesn't qualify since it's not old school? The director is Robert Harmon.

http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808396041/cast

I'm a bit confused since the Jurassic Park movies weren't low budget and Jaws was great, too. I think Arachnophobia did pretty well, didn't it?

Ok, I'll shut up now. :)

_____V_____ 10-31-2008 08:05 AM

Dagon, Creepshow, Slither...3 good ones. Slither is worth a re-watch too. Good reminders.

Despare 10-31-2008 08:36 AM

The Host
Brain Damage (you know which one)

I'm sure I'll think of a crap load more later.

_____V_____ 10-31-2008 08:37 AM

Yep. Brain Damage is a ridiculously cheesy rec. :)

That goes straight into the list as well.

I don't know if you include man made creatures but Frankenhooker kicks major amounts of ass.

Have you seen Razorback?

jenna26 10-31-2008 09:04 AM

Have you seen the slasher Pieces ('82)? If not, its a hell of a lot of fun.
So is Don't Look in the Basement ('73).
And Q: The Winged Serpent is definitely a good one, I watched it recently.
Two more slashers that fit, Happy Birthday to Me and also Terror Train.

I have trouble recommending films since there are so many that only I would like.....

La Chat Noire 10-31-2008 10:55 AM

Satan's Little Helper is a hilarious and cheesy B horror movie. My boyfriend picked it up for us a couple years ago and we were on the floor laughing.

Nella 10-31-2008 12:51 PM

It Waits (2005)

Jeepers Creepers
isn't cheesy to me. It was very disturbing in some parts. It's a creature movie. :)
Venom (1982)

The Mothman 10-31-2008 04:35 PM

Aren't these both Hellenlotter films?
I've only seen Basket Case but I'm trying to see some more from this guy.

Elvis_Christ 10-31-2008 05:29 PM

Frank Henenlotter is a fuckin' god! Brain Damage is a amazing film that ranks as one of my favorites. Can't wait to check out Bad Biology.

Can't beat the Basket Case trilogy for creature flicks.

Neon Maniacs is a fun flick too (but I think me and Crabby are the only cats that dig it tho haha).

Jenna's rec of Terror Train reminds me - how is Horror Express? I have heard nothing but good things about it, but have held back getting it till now. Is it as good as they say?

Elvis_Christ 10-31-2008 06:39 PM

Have you seen Motel Hell? It's probably exactly what you're after.

Yep, and it was hilariously funny. Great soundtrack too.

Time to give it another watch. In the list. :)

_____V_____ 11-01-2008 09:44 AM

Okay, in addition to the ones I listed in my initial post, I got these :-
  • Piranha
    Q: The Winged Serpent
    Bad Moon
    Blood Beach
    Critters
    The Thing With 2 Heads
    Fiend Without A Face
    Beast From 20000 Fathoms
    20 Million Miles To Earth
    Jack Brooks Monster Slayer
    Pumpkinhead 2 Blood Wings
    Dagon
    Creepshow
    Slither
    Brain Damage
    Basket Case
    Frankenhooker
    Neon Maniacs
    Pieces
    Motel Hell

Any more good cheese out there? Preferably creatures, mutations kinda stuff.

And, 2 of my questions have gone unanswered...

I never knew that was made by hellenlotter. I own that, i was a little disappointed though, the beginning was pretty cool, and the monsters were awesome, but it was a little slow.

Yeah it is a good film. Classic Lee/Cushing.

In atmosphere it reminds me of The Creeping Flesh.

Elvis_Christ 11-01-2008 04:58 PM

I prefer Leviathan over Deep Star Six because it's a lot darker. Its quite similar to The Thing in tone.

Nah that one wasn't by Henenlotter. It's no masterpiece that's for sure but I like it :)

Some more good cheese:

Okay that made the choice much easier. Leviathan it is.

And those two flicks looks plenty cheesy. I remember watching Remote Control a long time back. Let me see if I can dig out a copy of Trick Or Treat.

Thanks, bud. :)

It's a cheesy b-horror about killer sheep... honestly, that says it all. It didn't have a great script and won't be mistaken for a brilliant horror film but it was a blast with pizza and beer.
