SAW V - What's the verdict?
I assume some people here have seen it already - I am planning to sometime next week.
So - is it any good, at all? I've heard one or two negative reviews, but it seems largely to do with the same problem anyone ever has with the saw films, continuity stuff, confusion, time jumps...etc... Now, I loved the first saw and don't think any of the sequels have really done it a great deal of justice, but they all have their moments. #2 was a completely different kind of movie, reminded me a bit more of cube but ultimately an entertaining watch, with a couple of good twists. #3 was a bit of a let-down I thought, it was very convoluted, and I think easily the weakest of the series - to this day I have not seen it again since the cinema...I was ready to give up on the franchise at this point...it felt deliberately 2-part, which turned out to be the case, because a fair bit of the plot and characters of that film continued on in... #4 I saw no need to bring the Whalberg character back, I'll say that from the get-go...but I thought this was actually a huge improvement on the film prior. The proper jigsaw origin story was one of the best scenes/moments of all the saw films...my only problem with this one was that two of the cops looked pretty similar, and in the end I was left wondering who did what, and when - although I think upon a rewatch (yes, I actually think this one is worth rewatching) I'll get all that sorted. I just don't know what to expect with #5... Anyone who's seen it - how does it rate against the others? |
I haven't seen it yet but I've been hearing it was better than IV. Also, I completely agree with you on the confusion at the end of Saw IV. The cops might as well have been twins.
|
I've liked all of them but we can start by saying that none of them will have the impact of the first. V is also more like a crime drama with less gore than the other films, I think this worked. A lot of backstory came into play but I think it was necessary and all things considered this one ended up being pretty damn good. My rankings would be, starting with the best:
I II V IV III |
So is Saw 5 supposed to be the last one? I wasn't sure but the tagline led me to believe this.

I'm fairly indifferent. The 1st one is easily the best on all accounts. The rest are watchable-decent, so, like you said, as long as they continue that way, why not?

I wasn't planning on going at all to be honest, because Saw 4 was such a disappointment to me. I have went to see every Saw on opening night, so as the night went on, I felt out of place I suppose for not going.
So, I went. Great up until the last 2-3 minutes. For me it ruined the movie. Without spoilers, lets just say that the movie is amazing, but then when you least expect it the there's an extra twist that could possibly ruin it all for you personally. I rated it a D- on yahoo movies just because of the last 2-3 minutes. |
I was also confused at the end. I'd had a couple of beers before going so I was embarrassed when I had to ask my younger bro what happened. I wasn't drunk but he probably thought I was. I love Justin Louis, the actor, but I forgot what his name was in IV. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing 5.

I highly enjoyed the first 3 parts and sometimes I think it'd be better if they stopped at III. Though it was watchable as a time passing thriller but part 4 disappointed me in every way and I have no expectations from this series anymore.

Staci Layne of horror.com said "This time, the movie theater is a trap."
Staci Layne. Horror.com Horror. I think we should stay away. |
Sucked! I thought it was poorly made and really lame.
|
I guess I'll wait until it comes out on DVD.
|
Let me know if you see it and what you think Phalanx, read my little spoiler in Last Seen Movies after you watch it and tell me if you agree. One friend who watched it said she didn't like it after leaving the theater but then, after a few days had passed and she had thought about it, it grew on her a bit and she liked it more.
|
Yup, seeing it tonight, will give feedback.
|
Wow.. it was awful. Didnt jump once. I think the producers were like, "lets use the same sets and not make this one so gory so well make three times as much at the box office." All the other Saw movies were better then this one.

who the heck is she? it would be cool if the people who actually worked for this website posted here too, but they don't. snobs. |
sure there will be more
Saw V is much thriller it was the biggest horror movie I have seen in my entire life. Blood and killing all around, jigsaw passion is some thing I have loved. For a horror movie it was the greatest story. My self saw it from free movies oh boy I didn’t feel like sleeping. there will be more saw movies i guess

i just got back and though it was alright. Only thing I have really enjoyed through all of the movies was the pig masks jumping out of nowhere. the end was okay, but not a twist at all. So predictable. |
Alot of people don't like this film. I thought it was good, and fairly hardcore in the gore factor. I liked that it explained more things about the events in the other movies. When i heard it was out i wondered how they would be able to make another story, but they did and i think that they did it well.
|
I watched Saw V in the theater it was OK, but not worth the ticket price. Wait for DVD and if you can rent it for a $1 at the supermarket do that, Or netflix. Seemed too short and the end was not a big surprise.
|
I wish they would have stopped after II. II was enough to turn me off from the series (admittedly the used syringe pit was pretty cool).
|
I have a question about the very beginning, there was something that I didn't understand
I'll put it in spoiler text because I know that there are still a few people who haven't seen it yet: The guy did what he was supposed to do to save himself, but he was killed anyway...Why?...Did he wait too long to do it? |

The guy did what he was supposed to do to save himself, but he was killed anyway...Why?...Did he wait too long to do it? The first trap was just the detective taking care of his sister's killer, he set it up like a Jigsaw trap so he wouldn't be a suspect. There was really no escape from that trap, just "justice". That's why Jigsaw was pissed... |
Quote:
The whole point was that he was killed. Jigsaw didn't set up that trap - Hoffman did. The victim killed Hoffman's sister and got off, so he decided to kill him and make it look like a Jigsaw murder. Hence why Jigsaw kidnapped/tested Hoffman and said how he doesn't like getting credit for shoddy work. EDIT - Guess Despare beat me to it... |

I will finish it at some point... And thanks Return, for trying to help :) |
One word review of the SAW films.
SAW - "escalating" SAW 2 - "predominant" SAW 3 - "illiterate" SAW 4 - "childish" SAW 5 - "pittth" To sum up the series? "chesty" |

Okay, I watched the whole thing...I liked it, it wasn't bad...I hated the ending, but at least I understood it :)
|
Loved SAW 5. Love this whole fucking series actually, my second favourite behind The Evil Dead flicks.
If I had to rank them, it'd be this way: SAW 3 SAW SAW 5 SAW 2 SAW 4 I believe part 6 is supposed to finish off the series. You know they'll continue it though, and I'll be there every single fuckin' time! :D |
I'm pretty over this series and the majority of flicks the major studios are putting out. Might give it a watch sometime...
|
I liked the first one...I've seen the rest but I don't really get into them. Haven't seen 5 yet though. I'll probably watch it eventually.
|
I keep watching them even though they could have seriously stopped after the 1st. It's like they get gradually worse and worse.
|
saw
i hate that stupid movie
|
I'll watch every SAW movie until they stop making them. I think V was a little convoluted, but ot was nothing compared to IV. It seems like they might be back on track, but I can't see how they can keep going back in time to any more "parallel" stories with Jigsaw still alive.
