Monsters
I was originally going to keep this as "Movie Monsters", but then I realized that leaves out some classics, so here we are. Monsters are pretty much why I am into horror in the first place (and fantasy and sci-fi). I loved dinosaurs as a kid, and they were pretty much the ultimate "real" monster, and having seen Alien at 5, that left a mark. i got into D&D after reading the Monster Manual cover to cover at 12. So i figured i would post some of my favorites, figuring everyone else would do likewise:
For starters: The Alien The Predator Cloverfield (a recent favorite) Fiend(from quake) Houndeye (From halflife) ZOMBIES Werewolves (if done right) |
Vampires
Werewolves Frankenstein Zombies |
I love a good "monster" movie. Growing up, some of my favs where giant ants, a giant prying mantis, giant spiders....you get the drift. Of course there was Franky, The Mummy, The Wolfman and my fav of the Universal monsters, The Gillman.

the creeper (jeepers creepers) the thing - from the Thing the little troll guys from - the gate the tall man the mutated vampires in blade 2 the creature from Tremors |
The first monster who made any sort of impression on me was King Kong ('76 version) on the big screen. I was a curious 4 year old, and highly impressionable...I gawked at Kong and marvelled at his enormous size.
A few years later, I caught Godzilla on TV. And that made me marvel more. Since then, my childhood went through a rich experience of movie monsters - most notably Ray Harryhausen creations. I caught ahold of plenty of comic books about Cthulhu too, and non-fiction books which described Bigfoot, sea monsters like giant squids, mammoth whales, the Abominable Snowman etc. Initiation into the classic horror movie monsters came much later, and that started with Chris Lee's version of Frankenstein. Among my favs would be - Alien, Predator, Godzilla, King Kong, Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot (a TV series from the late 60s-early 70s which had plenty of re-runs), Ultraman, Fraggle Rock thingys, Cthulhu, the Rhedosaurus from Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, the monsters in Godzilla movies, the Cloverfield monster, Graboids, and to top them all - plenty of Harryhausen creations - Kraken, Medusa, Kali, Talos, Hydra, Cyclops, Gwangi, etc. And of course the dinos from Jurassic Park. |
OMG, V - I remember Ultraman!! :D

Here he comes from the sky! Ultraman, Ultraman, Watch out hero fly! Oh yeah, monsters are the shiznit! Nothin' better. The other series was "Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot" which was cut into a feature called "Voyage Into Space" which I have many fond memories of because it was on TV a lot back in the day... |

i like
gremlins.. the monsters from the guyver movies.. villians from the he-man cartoon.. critters... ghoulies from part 1 vampire.. the gingerdead man.. predator.. ....and what not.... |
When I was a kid, I was told some Scottish folktales, therefore had nightmares about horrific nighthag creatures. The Black Annis is one of the oldest, best and scariest of monsters, wanting nothing more than to strip the skin from little children and devour them. After that, I discovered Time Life's the Enchanted World books and learned about all kinds of abominations. My favorites from the movies are Godzilla, Hedorah, Gigan, the Harryhausen Medusa, the vampire in London After Midnight, the Karloff Frankenstein, whatever the thing from Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell is and some of the Final Fantasy bosses.

I love folk tale monsters.
Russalkas are freaking creepy; they are spirits of girls who died violent deaths in water. the original story i read about them said if a person looked into the pool a Russalka inhabited, they would see her reflection over their shoulder. she would appear dead with glowing green pinpoints in her eyes. if you made eye contact, she grabbed you by the hair and dragged you underwater and drowned you. I also always liked Baykok, a spirit in the great lakes region that looked like a skeleton covered in translucent skin with glowing red eyes that would kill warriors and eat their liver. I also read a description that said they would cut a man open with surgical precision, eat part of their liver, then sew them back up to die a long painful death. On a more modern note, any of the spirits, and pretty much anything that happens in the "spirit world" in FEAR scares the hell out of me. |
Black Shuk
Big Foot Nessie |
The black shuck is awesome.
|
not a monster in the classical sense, but Big Daddies from Bioshock are awesome.
I have always beena big fan of lovecraft's creations, so of course Cthulhu, but also Nyarlathotep, shoggoths and Mi-Go. And who can forget brother Whatley from Dunwich Horror? |

yeesh ! i could never cuddle that !! besides - it has a poin-ted stick |
He is very cuddly, but he has a passion for fast food that causes him to release a deadly nerve agent.
He's kind of like Godzilla in the old movies: he destroys, but he is still a sympathetic character. while we're talking about monsters, has anyone heard of the MLF phenomena? it was mentioned on this very forum for the first time a few years back. |

The Creeper King Kong (70's) Giant spiders (The Giant Spider Invasion) Godzilla Anaconda The Loch Ness monster Jason Vorhees (He may not be considered a monster but he scared me. I first saw him when I was 16. The first movie I ever watched him in was Friday the 13th: Part IV: The Final Chapter.) Bigfoot Abominable Snowman The dead girl in The Ring The alligator in Lake Placid The lions in The Ghost and the Darkness |

Jason always reminded me of the draugr, the Viking Undead. Undead vikings with superstrength are badass.
