My plea for Blair Witch 2

This is one of the three movies I can think of that I support that most people hate. (The other two are Pet Semetary 2 and Carrie 2: The Rage)

Why do people hate on BW2 so much? I thought it was really well done and very creepy. I blame it on its namesake, the same way I blame Halloween III & Hellraiser V on franchise association failure.

Do you guys really think that BW2 is that bad? If it would have just been called 'Book of Shadows' would it have changed your perspective?

I really like this movie. I want your opinions.

The Mothman 10-19-2008 10:20 PM

It was about 4 or 5 years since I've last seen it, I remember being a little scared by a couple parts. I'll give it another chance some time.

fortunato 10-19-2008 10:28 PM

Like Mothman, it's been quite a while since I've seen it.
Even more than 4 or 5 years, I imagine.
I do remember it having a pretty creepy atmosphere, and like I said, looking for all the hidden stuff was fun, too.

Maybe I'll rent it this week and give it another watch, and get back to you.

The Flayed One 10-19-2008 10:46 PM

Please do. This is NOT a bad movie. It's actually fairly creepy and atmospheric. Does it deserve a place on a top 100 list? Probably not, although I voted for it for the HDC hidden gems list.

Does it deserve the shit it gets? Absolutely not IMHO. I really don't understand why people hate this movie so much. I want definitive answers before I accept that fact that it's being considered as one of the worst horror movies ever.

You know what? Fuck it, I really enjoy this movie. Convince me it's that terrible (I'm a very reasonable guy) and I'll drop it.

I just want to hear some arguments.

Despare 10-19-2008 10:58 PM

I'll have to see it again but I don't remember liking either Blair Witch movies one bit. I've watched the first one two or three times now giving it multiple chances but I still haven't seen the appeal. The second I only watched once, and that was ages ago, I'll have to NF it.

Phalanx 10-19-2008 11:29 PM

Bland characters, same "you never know" twist at the end.
Other than...I didn't greatly dislike it, never much liked the first one - there were times that this one I felt had better atmosphere than the first...but, just reeked of straight to video...

I don't hate on it, but it hardly stands out.

That said, I wouldn't mind picking this up:

Nothing wrong with Pet Sematary II.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Blair Witch so I never checked out the sequel.

jenna26 10-20-2008 08:27 AM

I wasn't that impressed, it seemed....kind of forgettable to me, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as people say it is. Maybe I will give it another watch sometime as well, I might like it better if I watch it in the right mood.

YES!...I think Blair Witch 2 is suffering from 'Halloween 3' syndrome...Blair Witch 2 had as much 'Blair Witch' in it, as Halloween 3 had Michael Myers...

Halloween 3 would have been received FAR better as a stand alone titled 'Season Of The Witch'...It was a REALLY good movie

But...I also really like Pet Sematary 2 and Carrie 2, even if neither can touch their predecessors

urgeok2 10-20-2008 08:39 AM

i liked blair witch 2

i think most people didnt because they had Blair Witch 1 in mind re. their expectations.

this is a completely different movie in style and theme..

funny thing about blair Witch 1 ... a lot of people didnt like it either.
it became a critics darling so the sheep flocked to see it - people who wouldnt otherwise have seen it but are the kind to flock to what they are told to see by the media.

normally - the average critics are a safe bet - they dont like genre films - they worship things like driving miss daisy and the titanic ... and dont often get behind a little genre film like blair witch ..

so a lot of sheep were taken by surprise ... too bad so sad.

i'm not saying its everyones cup of tea .. even serious horror fans .. i'm just explaining the big backlash it got from the general public after the fact .

Even though I count the original among my all-time favourites, I've never really had much desire to see this one. Not sure why - it looks pretty decent and usually I don't pay much attention to public opinion...it just never really caught my eye.

I'll have to give it a rent and see what I think.

La Chat Noire 10-20-2008 09:28 AM

I didn't hate it. But I never saw the first one so I had no expectations. Overall it made for a fairly entertaining watch. Storyline and acting were decent, and the atmosphere was creepy, like most people are saying.

I believe that Book of Shadows is based on real life murders......http://lglevene.com/scifi_blairwitch...opstory_1.html

The_Return 10-21-2008 07:22 PM

Just rented it - I'll let you know tomorrow.

Nella 10-21-2008 11:33 PM

I didn't see the first one because it got bad reviews and I don't remember what happened in BW2. I know I watched it but it was a long time ago.

Maybe I will watch them both.

I also enjoyed Pet Semetary 2 and Carrie 2: The Rage.

Papillon Noir 10-23-2008 07:57 AM

I'm with Flayed on this one, I really liked BW2 and I have no idea why people hated it so much. I thought it was better than the first Blair Witch, which you do have to see to understand the second one. I think people had too many expectations for the sequel and wanted to see the witch, but I think not seeing her made it scarier and more intriguing.

Btw, you know that's a fake article, right?

I Thought i was the only one really liked Blair Witch 2
I think was great movie and good twist at end too

ChronoGrl 08-30-2009 06:03 AM

So I actually watched Blair Witch 2 last night, partly because I've always been meaning to in the back of my mind, and mostly because this thread reminded me of my desire to see it.

In all honesty, I was disappointed. I actually thought that the movie started off strong, showing "interviews" and clips from Conan and Leno talking about the Blair Witch phenomenon. I thought that going in the direction of Life After Blair Witch The Movie was a really brilliant idea. I really liked how the people in the town were capitalizing on the movie's success by selling rocks from their yards and giving fake Blair Witch tours and the whatnot. I thought that it was an interesting angle to take it.

Actually, I thought that the plot and characters were all fine (even the contrived "twist" at the end); I just think that there was a huge - HUGE flaw in the direction, editing, and sound choices. While some of you have mentioned that this movie was atmospheric, I felt as though it somehow sucked all of the mood out of any potentially creepy scene that there was. It was baffling to me; it's been a while since I've sat down at a film thinking, "I SHOULD feel this way, but this movie is just not successfully driving me to it."

Example: One of the "scarier" parts should be when the troop started to roll the footage they found from the site. I think that the footing was rolled back and forth so quickly, that there was no sense of dread built up as the audience is watching it played back. This should be a horrifying part of the film, but the dread did not impact me at all.

The acting wasn't that bad, though, and it was interesting to see Jeffrey Donovan (now of Burn Notice fame) portray the young filmmaker. That being said, the characters were definitely more caricatures ("The Witch," "The Goth"), and I think that they were more stereotypes than anything else, which bothered me, but I chose to ignore eventually.

So, honestly, I don't think that it's necessarily its tie to Blair Witch that really disappointed me in this film; if it had been pitched independent of BW, I would have feel the same way; it failed on a mood level and it failed in terms of creating characters that I actually cared about. This one gets a 2.5/5 from me.

It's interesting to hear from people who liked the film, though. Thanks for starting this thread, Flayed. Glad I finally got to see it. And I certainly hope that the original BW directors will be able to get around to another sequel, as they hope to at some point. I don't think that the BW myth is dead yet.
