Gotta love killer robots of all shapes and sizes. This is one of my favorite killer robot movies right up there witht the original Terminator (didn't really care for the sequels) and Class Of 1999. What do you guys think of this film?

A remake? No shit? What's with all the fucking remakes recently surely there must be some original ideas floating about out there somewhere?

A remake done correctly can become a classic itself, just look at The Thing. I've never seen Chopping Mall, all I could think of when I saw this thread was the fourth level of Zombie's Ate My Neighbors :).

you don't like terminator 2? I understand it isn't horror. I never classified the first as horror but now i think about it, it seems like one. I thought the second was good. Not the third. The "terminatrix" seems less dangerous than the liquidator.

Chopping Mall was a cool little flick with a great B cast. Whenever I catch it on Sci-fi it's called Kill-Bots.

Yeh when I first saw it it was called Killbots. Yeh I can't really be fucked with T2 I prefer the original because it was a really dark, unrealenting movie T2 relied on effects too much. I agree there is a lot of good remakes The Fly, The Blob and The Thing all come to mind. A Chopping Mall remake could be awesome my point was why not just pay homage to it while creating something more original?

But why would anyone want to remake Chopping Mall? It's not like it was a seminal horror film or a recognizable title that anyone could profit from.

Probably because it's a pretty popular cult classic alot of people really dig it plus there's a boom in the robot sci-fi thing (Matrix, T3, ect). I think it was a pretty strong entry into the stalk and kill movie because that stlye of film was pretty much dead by then and franchised itself into uncountable sequels. But its probably being made because the rights would be cheaper to get than stuff like TCM and Dawn of the Dead.

The one thing that always killed me about chopping mall was the poster.

A big, gauntleted hand holding a shopping bag full of chopped up body parts. And didnt the robots shoot people, rather than "chopping" them.

ahhh good ol' b movie logic. Especially in the 80s when the poster didnt have to have ANYTHING to do with the actual film.

Yeh they were just lasered and whatnot. Gotta love that exploding head bit! Not as cool as the one in Scanners but pretty good. I've got an article somewhere about the 80s movie posters some of them were shockingly done nothing to do with the movie at all. I guess they were just made to lure the audience in to seeing some violence and sex. I'll post the article once I find it all my shit is packed up at the moment cause I'm moving.

ooh! I've been meaning to see this. I love Paul bartel and Mary Woronov in Eating Raoul. I hear they cameo in this one.

Yeah, it's a brief one but they are the same characters. Dick Miller cameos in it too.

I haven't seen Eating Raoul what's it like?

Not my type of movie, and it really sux that they are remaking it. But the poster and cover of the movie kicks ass...

i bought an original VHS of chopping mall without a cover a few years back,from some creepy guy on a market - never saw him again......but anyway anyone know where i can get a cover to print?
also a re-make of this one would be quite good, a worthier remake than most of the stuff that has been churned out latley that didn't need remaking

I'm a fan of the movie but I'm going to remain unbiased on the forum for now. I like most campy B-movies regardless of how stupid some people think they are. There's usually something entertaining about most of them, even if they're unintentionally funny for whatever reason. Chopping Mall fits that catagory in some ways.

I'd actually welcome a remake of Chopping Mall, just to see the newer perception of what the producers think the movie should look like. Although, they must improve the robots for a modern remake.

On the other end of the scale of cool robot movies is virus. My god that film sucked. You'd think Jamie Lee Curtis would turn this crap down.

I believe it's a Full Moon film but I could be wrong on that (I might be thinking of Demonic Toys which I am pretty sure is Full Moon.) I know I have the VHS of this one somewhere. It was pretty bad if I remember correctly.

it's an 80's horror flick with teenagers......they don't care about acting :p

Those robots were pretty budget pieces of shit but that was part of the charm I guess.

Yeah, although their arms looked useless considering what they were made of. Only the stupid laser eye thing seemed to be a realistic threat.

If there's ever serious remake, they should start out not showing the robots, just speak of them. As the movie progresses show parts of them, but show things that look intimidating. If the robots ever do have to be shown, they should be worth looking at and appear to be a serious threat to people, instead of toasters on RC toy tank treads. However, keep them non-humanoid.

Well, that's my opinion anyway.

It must be about time for a new killer robot film to be made.... I'd go check it out if they didn't make it to cheesey and stupid (which would probably be the case).

Yeah, like Jaws. Basically, they should just have a psychological build up before unveiling the goods at the end. Unfortunately, it seems Hollywood is so in love with FX that they forgot the old magic of the psychological terror and suggestive photography.

Seeing someone look terrified but not seeing the actual thing they're afraid of is a good way to start, for example. Also, if you've ever seen the original "The Haunting" from 1963, it had some cinematography that is suggestive of something, along with sound effects. It's the simple task of letting people's imagination run loose with a idea they are going to be afraid of whatever it is.

Granted, some people may be dissapointed when they see the actual monster (mechanical or not). However, in the case of rabid robots running loose in a mall, it would probably be good to show them eventually.

It had a good head exploding scene which made up for that a bit.

Granted it wasn't the best movie, and I often fall asleep watching it. However, that's b-movie stuff.

By the way, not all horror movies have gore. If that's all you're looking for keep watching the slasher flicks that consist of some idiot with some blood covered blade chasing stupid teenagers.

I always thought it was funny how no matter how fast the kids run, the invincible killer only has to walk and catch up to them, sometimes the killer appears way ahead of them. Horror or not, I can't seem to get into those flicks. Also, gore flicks make me laugh mostly.
