the Golden Globes

anybody else watching them? I'm hoping for Big Fish in most of them, Charlize Theron for actress (in Monster), and other than that I'm not sure. Is Kill Bill up for anything?

avenger00soul 01-25-2004 04:08 PM

I'm actually watching it now. Chiklis lost though so I'm kinda bummed for the rest of the show.

I doubt Kill Bill is up for anything. Who knows though.

i think awards shows are bullshit in nature. The only ones worth anything are the ones the fans decide.

I do hope the best for Tim and Big Fish tho.

I must concur. I think celebreties are bullshit. I kinda have a romantic soul for the medieval actors (only including women)...wondering troops...companies that made their own way.

I hate the way the awards shows always make a big deal about Jack Nicholson. He has been a cariacture of himself for twenty-five years.

They just showed him giving the award for best actress. Was he drunk, or what?

Sam The Egg 01-25-2004 07:24 PM

Charlize Theron won, all is right with the world

meetthecreeper 01-25-2004 07:31 PM

Not a big fan of awards shows, mostly because I think it is a bunch of snobs who pick the nominations and winners, and a lot has to do with Hollywood politics. I think being an actor can take its toll on a persons psyche, does Jack Nicholson really know who he is or is he just one of his characters that he has played over the years. I love Sean Connery as an actor, but on the bonus material in League of Extr. Gentleman he said he turned down a role in Lord of the Rings because he did not understand the script or the story, big mistake for him IMO. He also said he didnt understand LoEG but he took the part anyway because he didnt want to miss an oppurtunity. Kind of deflated my opinion of him.

Sam The Egg 01-25-2004 07:47 PM

of course it's political, but if there's a movie you like that gets nominated it's fun to watch and see if it wins

meetthecreeper 01-25-2004 07:51 PM

Sam I agree that it is nice to see a film I enjoy getting an award, but many films are not recognized for the what they are and some are recognized for what they are not. I guess its all a matter of opinion.

Sam The Egg 01-25-2004 08:47 PM

there's always a couple movies I'll watch and be pulling for. Sometimes a movie that is up for best picture is something I really thought was the best movie that year, or for a performance. Last year, I thought Gangs of New York was far and away the best movie of the year. This year the only thing I feel that strongly about is Charlize Theron in Monster.

Dr.Kelvinstein 01-25-2004 09:06 PM

I don't know who I'm going to be pulling for in the Oscars. Lord of the Rings was the big winner in the Golden Globes, and I usually pull for genre veterans, but Mystic River was an amazing movie.....So maybe Peter Jackson can get Best Director and Mystc Best Picture. That would make me happy.

Taxi Driver and The Wild Bunch never won Director or Picture, and yet crap like Gladiator and Last Empreror have. But sometimes they actually award something like Unforgiven and Braveheart that deserves to win. Always a tough call.

Sam The Egg 01-25-2004 09:09 PM

Nothing in Oscar History can out-farce Kevin Cosnar getting Best Director for Dances With Wolves. Now, the fact that he won isn't the problem, the problem is that nominated that same year was Martin Scorses for Goodfellas. Let that sink in. On second thought, don't. If you think about that fact for too long blood will shoot out your nose.

And hells yes Taxi Driver should've gotten best pic. Taxi Driver = Best Movie Ever.

Dr.Kelvinstein 01-25-2004 09:12 PM

Since you like Taxi Driver (I love it, too) and live in St Louis, I was wondering if you saw it on the big screen about seven or so yrs ago at that theater downtown that specializes in indie films?

Sam The Egg 01-25-2004 09:16 PM

I was 10 seven years ago. I had odd tastes in movies even then, but I doubt I would have been able to appreciate the movie.

Dr.Kelvinstein 01-25-2004 09:23 PM

Oh well. The place was packed with film geeks and Harvey got a standing ovation. I drove four hours just to see it. Got drunk afterwards and made fun of some ravers. Threw a beer bottle at a guy with green hair and Day-glo sticks.

I think Kevin Costner even being nominated for Dances was a farce. That movie was a big sentimental buffalo chip. It totally glamorized Native Americans as Noble Savages without even addressing the hardships that made them tough in the first place. No Indian in Dances was going blind because there wasn't enough meat in his diet, and everyone looked robust and healthy instead of like the lean feral soldier/killers you see in photographs.
