horror movie marathon 2008 opinions
 

so next month i'll be having my annual horror movie marathon. i've been doing it now for four years, and it's always such a blast.

i posted my lineup last year, asking for suggestions, advice, and the like, and got some wonderful responses. so this year, i'm asking for the same. i need all my hdc brothers and sisters to give me any recommendations/opinions/etc.

so here's the tentative list:

1. monster squad (1987)
2. the cabinet of dr. caligari (1920)
3. horror of dracula (1958)
4. onibaba (1964)
5. blood and black lace (1964)
6. i drink your blood (1970)
7. cat people (1942)
8. blood feast (1963)
9. the beyond (1981)

i think maybe i should include at least one somewhat recent film, seeing as how the most recent one i have included so far came out in 1987.

All good modern horror flicks.

Recent ones...maybe something from Burton? Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd both fit the Halloween atmosphere, IMO.


The Mist?
In the Mouth of Madness? (Not sure if that's recent enough for you though - 1995?)
Event Horizon? (Same note as above though, but slightly more recent)
Dagon?

What about Silent Hill? One of the most atmospheric horror flicks of the decade, love that movie.

As for just general suggestions, I very highly recommend that you look in to a copy of Dungeon of Harrow. I know I pimp that movie constantly around here, but it's PERFECT for Halloween, especially if you're watching it with friends. Plus, it's super cheap on Amazon ;)

EDIT - I forgot about Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon! One of the best slasher flicks in many, many years and perfect for something like this.

How long is this marathon going to go for? Maybe I will have one myself.

I'm Recommending Hatchet because I think you need a good slasher in there.

Maybe you could get Rod to send you a copy of Gaillo....

I would recommend Creep.

Very atmospheric, and creepy. Right up with the modern best in horror, and would be a nice addition to that line-up.

I'd recommend Slither for a more recent horror addition.
You need a little comedy in there, and this one delivers the goods, but not without its fair share of gore and shock.

Feast would also do for the same reasons, but I prefer Slither myself.

For me, House of a Thousand Corpses screams Halloween.

I didn't know there was any other HO1K out there :D I love this movie. I would have to add Halloween into your list of viewing!

Funny, I was wathing tht at my house when I poste my first recommendations but decided not to nominate it as its kind of a horror comedy. But if others think it's a good idea, yeh, I recommend it too.

anyone else have any ideas? i love some of the ones on here already, so i just wanted to see if anyone had anything else perhaps. anything more modern, maybe post 1990?
i'm trying to finalize the list.
and also, does the list seem good itself, as far as mix of films and flow?

your guys' input means a whole heck of a lot to me.

I saw this movie on demand earlier this year and it's amazing. It's a realistic portrayal of what happens in a small Australian town when one of its members desides to start killing his neighbors. True story and hard hitting. Not a traditional horror gorefest but thank goodness for that. It's original and gripping.

You know what's shameful? You've recommended ALL of those to me... And I have not seen a single one... :o

I would not recommend Creep. I thought that it was over-reaching and absolutely ridiculous. There's a point where horror moves need to enable you to suspend your disbelief, but Creep did no such thing. It's trying to be Hills Have Eyes... In the sewers.

I think that House of a Thousand Corpses would really compliment your list. As it was mentioned before, it screams Halloween and it's incredibly well-done. A wonderful homage to films that came before...

I think it might be fun to do an Old Meets New theme (with House of a Thousand Corpses)... Couple it with the Wizard of Gore remake (to compliment Blood Feast) and throw in Feast, too (also to compliment Blood Feast and From Beyond). Audition or Gozu will compliment Onibaba nicely (or maybe shake up the full-length movie theme by throwing in Three... Extremes as a tasting of New Asian Horror). I know that May is a favorite of yours... I think that it's a necessity for any horror movie marathon, but your list seems to entail monsters, ghosts, and the supernatural; I'm not sure if May would fit in.

Two of my absolute favorite modern horror films are Ils and Inside (if you wanted to deviate from your current themes and meander into Home Invasion)... If you wanted to do low budget, maybe throw in Mulberry Street (add more Monsters to your list) or Crazy Eights for a nice little low-budget ghost flick.

Ooooo. Session 9! How 'bout it??

What about zombies??? Throw in Zombie II and 28 Weeks Later - It would be nice little contrast.

Let me know what the final list is.

Modern Monster Movie...

Jeepers Creepers. That would REALLY fit nicely into your list.

On the contrary, I think Creep would be a neat little addition to any Halloween movie extravaganza anyone is planning. It borrows a bit from TCM no doubt, but has a lot of stuff people love to watch on Halloween occasion - it is a gritty, tense and really gripping film which holds its own among the many other clones which crowd such kind of films. You can really relate to the kind of stuff which Creep shows. One of the better films of the 2000s, IMHO.

i'm really thinking of adding house of 1000 corpses, as somehow i haven't had that one in a lineup yet.

audition we watched the first year. session 9 and zombi 2 have been watched, too.

I always like the throw in something REALLY bad when I do things like this - we capped off my last one with Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys, which was a blast to watch with a bunch of friends at 4 am.

although i guess i wouldn't call the beyond "REALLY bad," (i mean i think it's a blast) the plot is certainly absurd and nonsensical enough to illicit hilarious reactions, especially at 3-4 in the morning.

Go to see House Of 1000 Corpses getting a spin, I fuckin' love that film.

Creep is a decent watch if you can handle to annoying as fuck lead actress (but that was the point of her character). Its got a lot of grizzly dark atomosphere that was great to see on the big screen. One of the best English horror flicks in a long time. Pity Christopher Smith went on to direct the total shitfest Severance.

Can't remember if I said it earlier but Motel Hell would be great to put into something like this especially if you pick up the double feature DVD with Deranged (one of my favorite serial killer flicks) on it.

...and for cheesy goodness give Shock 'em Dead a watch!

As "Halloween" isn't a tradition to celebrate here in Bangladesh largely so I have only a plan to watching horror movies in back to back shows in my home. I have made the following list for my Halloween Marathon Extravaganza and that I'll like to start tomorrow night @ 7:00 p.m. (BDT). Though Friday is our weekly holiday here but I guess I can only get to see 6 to 7 out of them for some time constraint..:)
