Johnny Depp to play The Riddler?!

August 01, 2008

Speculation on the villains for the next Batman film is coming thick and fast, with the UK's Daily Telegraph throwing two new stars into the mix.

The paper, quoting 'unnamed sources', says that Warner Bros. have targeted Johnny Depp to play The Riddler, and Philip Seymour Hoffman to take the role of The Penguin.

According to their source: "Producers are convinced that the role of The Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction and still make the character his own. And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman?"

This comes off the back of the rumour earlier this week that Angelina Jolie is interested it the role of Catwoman.

Bat-fans will remember that Jim Carey was the last actor to have a crack at playing the Riddler in Batman Forever, whilst Danny De Vito portrayed the villainous penguin in Batman Returns.

When contacted, Christopher Nolan had this to say: "It's still early, but that will make things interesting."

He didn't deny the rumor.

More news on this as it comes in.

Interestingly, that is also the title of a Batman graphic novel which Frank Miller is interested in developing with Zack Snyder. I think Miller has got it copyrighted.

No, this might be titled differently. After Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, I am thinking an apt title would be - Riddle Me This. ;)

Just kidding.

"Batman Continues"

Dante'sInferno 08-01-2008 06:43 AM

Or simply put

Batman fucking rules.:D

Heh,yeah I knew that title(TDKR),sucks they probably won't use it though.

massacre man 08-01-2008 06:46 AM

"The Caped Crusader"

or

"The Goddamn Batman"

or

"Not a Rickroll"

But I'd like to see Depp's spin on the ol' Riddler. *crosses fingers* no crotch-grabbing. No crotch grabbing.

I thought Nolan wasn't using the Penguin?

Great fucking choices for both roles. PSH is a fantastic actor, and Depp's pretty damned good too. Both would do great as those characters. I look forward to the next Batman. :)

The_Return 08-02-2008 09:47 AM

I call bullshit.

Nolan already expressly ruled out The Penguin (a LONG damn time ago), and they already set up Riddler with Joshua Harto.

massacre man 08-02-2008 09:50 AM

Would anybody else rather see Hoffman as Harvey Bullock than the Penguin anyway?

Agreed. I think Depp would be great, but Nolan DID say no Penguin.

I do believe it was Goyer who said that. Nolan just said adapting him would be "tricky".

Hmm...I've never read the actual interview or whatever it's from, but Nolan usually gets credit for it.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to it, would you? I'd love to see what he actually said...

That quotes it. I don't know where to find issues of Esquire online so I'm not sure where to get the exact interview.

Hoffman's too meek. I want to see William H. Macy as the Ventriloquist.

I picture him playing Bullock kind of like his character from Red Dragon. If that paints the picture I see better.

Let's let them finish counting the money on "The Dark Knight" before they think of the next one. But let's hope it's as good

I remember reading something (maybe in Entertainment Weekly?)
that Nolen has not decided to do another Batman and nothing has been put in writing or even handshaked on....so, what does that mean?

My opinion is: that would suck donkey dick if he didn't end up doing it.

If Nolan doesn't come back I'd say DC should leave it alone for another 15 or so years and work on their other properties. Put out Man of Steel, if that turns out bad leave Clark alone for a shorter amount of time for the opposite reason. And get to work on getting Ollver, Hal, and Barry onto the screen.

I totally agree, it would give enough time for everyone to somewhat forget how incredible it would HAVE BEEN.

ferretchucker 08-03-2008 04:59 AM

I think that's just a rumour, considering Penguin is ruled out. It probably started with someone just commenting that they think "he might be good for the role".

If they don't use Joshua Harto as Coleman Reese for the riddler, than it could possibly be him. Apparently David Tennant would be interested in the role (Scottish actor who currently plays "The Doctor" in Doctor Who, and played Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter 4.) Out of the three of them I think they'd all be good.

The_Return 08-03-2008 01:01 PM

The more I think about it, the more bullshitty it seems.

Nolan wouldn't just bring a major baddie out of the woodwork after something like Dark Knight. They've either already set him up, or he'll just be background IMO.
