I got fired today!

Yep. I got fired for being too slow at making coffee. A likely excuse. In all reality I was inciting panic in employees by telling them about the ridiculous reasons for people being hired and fired recently. People who have no plans to gain an education can keep a job at Tim Hortons' for 25 years, even though they make coffee at half my speed. Management overheard me and another guy complaining and now I'm out of a job. Just one week before my probationary period was up, and I got fired. They certainly waited to get the most out of their money, because one week longer and they'd have to give me a raise. Ridiculous. Even if I was fired for being slow, that's quite a contradiction. We're told that customers come first, and we should do our best to give them what they want. They tell us that, but want us to do everything fast, fast, fast. I'm just morally opposed to doing anything less than a proper job.

The best part is how I've been sick with a flu bug for the past 72 hours. I called in sick last night for today's shift and the Manager has the guts to call my house in the early morning, wake me from the sleep I had just fallen into, all to tell me my "position was terminated". Real fucking classy.

I know the above probably sounds like I'm pretty angry, but I truly could not care less. The job was killing me. After getting that call, all my flu bug symptoms were gone, and I was able to sit and draw something other than fan art, for the first time since I started working at Tim Hortons'. Literally sucked the life out of me. I'm so much happier now, and am hoping to find a job at a nice little artsy coffee place. Somewhere relaxed, where it's okay to do things right instead of just fast. Where I can be creative, get my photography hung on the wall and serve fair trade coffee.

End of ranting/ expression of gratitude.

Best of luck Miss M.

It's awful to have a job you hate. Hope you find something better soon.

Noah 07-10-2008 01:08 PM

Tough luck Miss. Hopefully you'll find something better, eh.

Psycom5k 07-10-2008 01:33 PM

Well, Congrats on losing your job. I guess thats the best way to say it, given your statement about how you hated the job so much. And you'll find a better one. Don't worry about it.

Posher778 07-10-2008 01:51 PM

You can work for me. And be the little lady. Yes. I am a newlyfound chauvenist. Now make me a mocha.

illdojo 07-10-2008 02:38 PM

Sounds like you're better off, MissM. I don't hate my job, I tolerate it.
One day....you'll find the same thing ;)

Disease 07-10-2008 02:40 PM

Where is my coffee, I ordered it a fucking hour ago!

Take the experience with you.

massacre man 07-10-2008 02:50 PM

Why do you only want to work at Coffee places?

Maybe she really likes coffee? Or maybe shes attracted to the twats that go there and sit at the tables with their fucking laptops typing away at their novels that nobody is ever going to read, just to feed into his own twisted image of self worth?

Don't ask me why, but people who go to coffee shops to get work done just fucking annoy me. It makes me want to dump my overpriced coffee on their laptops. I mean seriously, who goes into a public place to get work done, like writers.... I mean cmon. They are just there to look cool or some shit. I don't know. Fuck em.

ChronoGrl 07-10-2008 03:07 PM

What assholes. The service industry seriously sucks, especially at fast food-type chains (I know it's not a Wendy's, but it's like fast food coffee; pretty much the same idea).

You're a threat to management; you're the person that makes them think, "What am I doing with my life?"

Good to hear that it's giving you some breathing room to get inspired... You should post it... I love your art.

Good luck, MM.

Dante'sInferno 07-10-2008 03:18 PM

Too bad Tim isn't still around. Of course doing things fast is what killed him, but he would have appreciated the effort. He always gave it. Long Live #2 and Miss Macabre. The manager is probably another frustrated Leafs fan.
Go Sabres.

Vodstok 07-10-2008 04:26 PM

I know he feeling MM. I have been let go a few times, but only girlfriends were dickless enough to do it over the phone...

My experience says that it is always for the best. got canned from one job because one guy didnt like me, so of course he was the one i answered to. went from that one to a job that nearly doubled my income. They never gave me any work, so after 9 months of sitting in a cube, bored, posting on hdc and writing my own programs, i finally got the axe, and walking out of there felt like edward norton walking out of his office for the last time in fight club.. i whistled all the way to the car and smiled at everyone i passed, almost laughing at the fact that they "got to" stay...

my latest contract, he thinks he canned me, but i had quit the previous week. the project went over the allotted time by nearly double, which was a shock to him despite the fact that i told him we were runningout of hours and i was working on it hardcore for 2 weeks straight....

anywho, i have 2 simultaneous contracts now, which means a shitload of work and pressure, but a much bigger paycheck. and i like programming :)

urgeok2 07-10-2008 04:41 PM

small organizations - especialy in the service industry are run by standards you'll never see again once/if you enter the 'corporate world'

although far from perfect - they dont get away with the kind of crap these mickey mouse places do ..

(however there are completely different challenges that can be even more problematic)

it sucks to be fired for any reason .. but jobs like that are a dime a dozen - you should be able to grab something else pretty quick.

missmacabre 07-10-2008 04:50 PM

@posher: When were you not a shauvenist?
@Massacre Man: Coffee places are about all we've got around here. That or highly priced souvenir and antique stores but then my job will likely only last as long as the tourist season which is coming to a close. Plus there's just something about the little coffee stores. I used to go to one almost every day and sketch. The owner was always very nice and he gave great criticism. (he's since given up the job to go to rehab but whatever.) I live in a very arts based community, and I love it despite my griping. I just want to be around what I consider to be my people and if that makes me an art snob I'm proud to be one. :)
@Psycom: You should know by now, I hate coffee.

Thanks for all the words of wisdom everyone.

horrorchic 07-10-2008 05:08 PM

I worked at a Panera Bread, which is a coffee house with bread. It was one of my favorite jobs becasue we did nothing, but make food all day. The food was mostly unmodifiable. Inother words if it said that mustard came on it, that is what came on it. All the baked goods were great too. There were fifteen guys with laptops there all of them asking for my opinion or help with one thing or another.

Just gotta find soemthing you like.

Freak 07-10-2008 06:33 PM

Sorry to hear that MM but it sounds like it was for thes best.Hope you find something better in the near future.

I don't really care as much about losing a job as much as I do as the actual firing. to be infuriated and just have to smile and pretend you don't care as your piece of shit boss gets to "prove" they're better than you for 10 minutes.

The can only think of two ways to have an enjoyable firing, and both are highly illegal.

I can't get mad at Tim Hortons though, they are the cornerstone of my diet; coffee and cigarettes

and the list of additives in Tim Horton's coffee is almost as long as the list of crap in your cigarettes. True story.

well there are all sorts of urban legends about there being nicotine in the coffee but that's clearly illegal. As far as additives go, I'm willing to bet there's no legitimate source saying that there are additives. Tim Hortons did issue a statement saying that there aren't but hell, Mc Donalds makes statements about their food being healthy.

What I do know, is that if I drink a cup of fair trade coffee it tastes great, and I know where it comes from. If I drink a cup from Timmies, it tastes the exact same every time. There is no difference in the coffee, and therefore no difference in the beans? They have to be processing it somehow to make every cup identical.

Edit: and decaf, is obviously put through a long chemical process to take out caffeine.

ferretchucker 07-11-2008 01:57 AM

Sorry about you losing your job. The boss sounds like a douche. You're probably better off without it because like you said, you feel better now!

In the last five years or so I've noticed them popping up here and there. And to be fair...I've never tried them. Dunkin Donuts on the other hand has a store located every two miles, it seems. At least thats the case here in little Rhody.

Hope you've got the cash for all the necessities till you find another job. Fuck those soulsucking parasites. At least you got to keep your integrity and were straight up with saying what you feel. All the best anyways

Glad to hear that you managed to get out of that shithole!

Shame that you couldn't have left on your own steam, but still - that place was not doing anything good for your health. Good luck job hunting!

That doesn't really mean there are still chemicals in the bean even IF they used a chemical process.

"European Process

Most decaf coffees are made using a chemical process first used in Europe. This process involves soaking the beans in water and then "washing" them in methylene chloride to absorb the caffeine from the bean. After this, the beans are rinsed clean of the chemicals, dried and shipped to the coffee roasters. The advantage of this method is that it provides decaf coffee with more flavor than the Swiss water processing. Although there is virtually no trace of any chemicals left in the bean after roasting, some people are uncomfortable knowing that the coffee they are drinking was chemically processed.

Swiss Water Process

The second method is known as "Swiss water processing". This process uses no chemicals, but rather hot water and steam to remove the caffeine from the coffee. The "life" of the bean is taken into the water, and then the water solution put through activated charcoal filters to remove the caffeine. Once the caffeine is removed, these same beans are then put back into the decaffeinated solution to re-absorb everything except the caffeine. The beans are then dried and shipped to the roasters. The disadvantage is that the water processing removes more than just the caffeine. Some of the oils from the coffee bean are removed as well, making it less flavorful.
"

I think letting you get to the end of the probationary period is a joke, maybe the company is purposely hiring people for short periods of time to get cheap labor without providing benefits. Fucking leeches. Good luck.

It's Tim Hortons...they're infamous for cheap-ass shit like that. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

It's true. I know a girl (my boyfriends ex actually) who worked there until just before her probation was up and she got fired for "not smiling enough". :D

A few more positive things to getting fired: I realize that I put too much thought into having a job and making money that I forgot about how much I love life. Today has been awesome, just looking at everything and seeing how great and important it is to me.

Also I convinced my dad to boycott Tim Hortons just so he'd stop spending ten bucks a day on the stuff. he's so addicted.
